CONFERENCE 40 RUNNERUP UNION CONFERENCE 40 CHAMPION VIRGINIA HIGH VS. CONFERENCE 39 RUNNERUP RICHLANDS VHSL GROUP 2A WEST REGION TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALISTS PREDICTIONS 1. MARTINSVILLE 2. DAN RIVER 3. VIRGINIA HIGH 4. GRAHAM VHSL GROUP 2A WEST REGION CHAMPION PREDICTION MARTINSVILLE MARTINSVILLE - STRONG INSIDE PRESENCE LED BY DEVONNTE HOLLAND WILL GIVE MARTINSVILLE ITS BEST SHOT AT A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN A DOWN YEAR FOR THE WEST REGION DAN RIVER - DEFENDING 2A STATE CHAMPIONS WILL GIVE STRONG ATTEMPT AT A REPEAT BUT WILL NOT BE AS STRONG AS LAST YEAR VIRGINIA HIGH - MOST ATHLETIC TEAM COMING OUT OF FAR SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA WHO SHOULD WIN THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GOING AWAY IN AN OTHERWISE VERY DOWN YEAR IN THE USUALLY VERY COMPETITIVE AND STRONG CLINCH MOUNTAIN CONFERENCE.. SHOULD MAKE IT TO THE REGION SEMIFINALS BUT WILL MEET THEIR MATCH THERE. GRAHAM - COULD BE THE CINDERELLA TEAM COMING OUT OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA WITH SOME EXPLOSIVE AND UNDERRATED GUARD PLAY. TEAM IS FLYING WAY UNDER THE RADAR FOR MOST. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT WILL BE COMING OUT OF BLUEFIELD, VIRGINIA. GLENVAR - THE SURPRISE TEAM FROM CONFERENCE 38 WHO HAS AN UPSET OF THE HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE AND HIGHLY RANKED RADFORD BOBCATS ON THEIR RESUME. COULD BE A POSSIBLE TEAM FLYING UNDER THE RADAR IN THIS YEARS TOURNAMENT. UNION - HAS SOME VERY NICE ATHLETES. HAS SOME VERY BAD LOSSES....BUT GOOD ENOUGH TO GET OUT OF THEIR WEAK CONFERENCE. TO QUOTE THE GREAT COACH BOBBY KNIGHT, "NEVER HAS SO LITTLE BEEN GOT OUT OF SO MUCH.". RICHLANDS - THE AIR HAS GONE OUT OF THE FAB 5 FRESHMAN FROM LAST YEAR. THE TEAM MOST PREDICTED TO BE THE FRONTRUNNER FOR THE TOP OF THE WEST REGION HAS NOW BEEN PUT ON THE BACKBURNER. IF THERE IS A SOPHOMORE JINX, ITS HAPPENED HERE AT THIS SCHOOL. TEAM IS UP AND DOWN.....BUT FIGURES TO BE MOSTLY DOWN COME TOURNAMENT TIME IN THIS REGION. RANDOLPH HENRY - ONLY OTHER TEAM THAT HAS A CHANCE TO MAKE IT OUT OF CONFERENCE 37 WHICH COULD BE AS WEAR OR WEAKER THAN CONFERENCE 40 THIS YEAR. DO NOT EXPECT THIS TEAM TO MAKE MUCH NOISE IF ANY AT ALL IN THE REGION TOURNAMENT.
  2. The VHSL region tournaments for volleyball, basketball, baseball, etc. are broke down into two regions: East and West While the six classes have placed the number of schools in the VHSL on an much even playing field than before, the regions have thrown a bunch of travel and financial problems into the mix with the two regions containing schools which are flung clear across the state from each other. In Region 1A West, the problem isnt as bad as the problem that can be found in Region 2A West and in Region 3A West where in those respective regions the region extends from Lee County to 2 hours outside of Richmond in 2A West and from Abingdon, Virginia to just north of Harrisonburg, Virginia in 3A West.......whereas the schools in Region 1A West are spread apart from Ewing, Virginia to Bath County. I believe that it would be in the best interest of the schools, athletic directors, principals and other administrators ....and most importantly for the fans as well who want to travel and support their school and their team if the VHSL would consider breaking down their regions into 2 parts. For instance: Allow Conference 39 and Conference 40 to be 2A West Region I. Allow Conference 37 and Conference 38 to be 2A West Region II. This setup would allow for principals, athletic directors, coaches and administrators for each region the ability to meet in more localized locations for their schools as well as give the schools the ability to host tournaments the ability to draw more fans to their region tournaments. It is all a win-win. Each year, each conference could rotate hosting the tournament. For example: 2017 - 2A West Region I host - Conference 39 - Marion, Virginia 2018 - 2A West Region I host - Conference 40 - UVA - Wise 2019 - 2A West Region I host - Conference 39 - Richlands, Virginia 2020 - 2A West Region I host - Conference 40 - Lebanon, Virginia 2021 - 2A West Region I host - Conference 39 - Graham HS 2022 - 2A West Region I host - Conference 40 - Gate City HS The same could be done for the schools in Conferences 37 and 38. With this new region setup, you could have four schools advance to the Region Tournament: 2 schools from Conference 39 and 2 schools from Conference 40 with a playoff that would look something like this: 2A West Region I Marion, Virginia Marion Senior H.S. - Conference 39 host 6pm game - Conference 40 Champion Lebanon vs. Conference 39 Runnerup Virginia High 7:30pm game - Conference 39 Champion Richlands vs. Conference 40 Runnerup Union With the winners of each game advancing to a 2A Western Virginia Tournament Semifinal round with the host being rotated each year among the two Western regions instead of among all four conferences each year. 2017 - 2A West host - Virginia High 2018 - 2A West host - Martinsville 2019 - 2A West host - UVA - Wise 2020 - 2A West host - Floyd County 2021 - 2A West host - Marion 2022 - 2A West host - Liberty University From there, winners advance to either the Final Four in Richmond or to a Championship Final in Richmond at the Siegel Center. The six class division would then become more fan friendly and also more administration friendly for all those involved as well as building the rivalries between the schools in the localized areas while making meetings among the schools and the athletic directors more user friendly as well.
