Chilhowie and Lebanon square off again, but this time regular season bragging rights and a #1 seed in the Region 1D tournament is at stake. The game is being played at Emory and Henry--Saturday (2/11) at 6:00PM. What are your thoughts?
These two teams might have the best resumes in 1D…and maybe 2D as well. Lebanon has wins over Va High, Honaker(2), Eastside (2) Union and the one win against Chilhowie. Chilhowie has wins over Shelby Valley, Ridgeview, Union (2) and the win over Lebanon. Should be a good game.
Gate City, Abingdon, Va High, Ridgeview all the same to me. Flip a coin. If Graham wouldn't have had the stupidity and their youthful starters could have gained the valuable experience in playing games, they would have had a small shot, but still a shot, to possibly pull an upset over one of the M7 teams in the regionals. IF...they had their starters and game experience, they would have had a shot to knock off VA High in the SWD tournament and slip into the Regionals and advance out of the district.
Abingdon and Va High are considerably better coached than Ridgeview and GC. Talent wise I would say you are probably corrext
Graham was down all 5 starters against Richlands. It was terrible basketball all the way around. If you have NFHS, just watch a few minutes, it’s pitiful. Kids all play hard just not a lot of good ball handling & playing. M7 is going to have SWD for lunch come playoffs, probably on girls’ side too. SWD is just way down all the way around. Graham is decent at full strength but they’re not the same level as in the past few years.
Really, you are correct, it may be closer to 23ppg. He had 32 points on the 7 foot lineup of Abingdon. A team that destroyed Tazwell, by what 65?
Abingdon beat Tazewell by 65 without Willis. With Willis it was an 11 point game.
It’s obvious you are either related to Collins or just a really big fan. I’m not disputing that he’s a great player. I would take a soph EC for 2 more years over a senior Willis for sure. However, right now, Willis is a better player in my opinion.
Yeah I don’t understand this at all. The ball is in Collins’ hand 90% of the game, so obviously he can create his own shot. The problem for central seems to be no one else can create their own.
Struggles to get his own shot because he’s running the team the whole time. He isn’t quick enough to beat smaller defenders and he can’t post them because he can’t pass it to himself.
And he is nowhere close to 25 a game that’s silly.
Pretty sure all of these players are seniors and juniors other than one, Collins- a sophomore. Pretty impressive in my book that he’s getting compared to upperclassman.
Collins is a really good player-his biggest issue is that he struggles getting his own shot. If Central had a dynamic PG that could take Collins off the hall he would be even better.
When Willis is healthy he’s as good as Lane and Worley (the other two best guards in the area)
Only game of the year. What happened to Tazwell when they played George Wythe, Lebanon, Abingdon and I could go on. Lost by at least 20 each game. I'm not saying Willis is a bad player, just my opinion Collins is better and does more for his team.
I have a few questions since I just don't know 100% of the facts.
1. What allows John Marshall to do this? Is there something different about the type of school they are from other public schools in Virginia?
2. Is there anything preventing other schools from doing this?
3. What's the legality of all of it? Is it actually "illegal" and the VHSL just turns a blind eye to it all?
4. What if a school from this area wanted to do this. What would that school need? Money for housing? Do parents need to move? Recruiting coordinator?
5. Is there anything preventing a school from SWVA to have those things? Do you need to have sponsors/parents/fans put money up for this to happen?
6. If there is nothing preventing other VHSL teams from doing this then Is it simply that people/coaches/schools want to keep it in house? Develop and grow people from SWVA instead of recruit out of state kids? Do school boards, administrators play a role in not allowing other schools/coaches/teams to do this? Would it be too much of a headache? Does the community simply want to keep it traditional?
I completely agree that there is no need for a team of this caliber to compete in 2a. It prevents opportunities for our area to go and get a championship. I'm kind of shocked that other schools aren't saying to themselves in football, basketball, soccer, baseball, etc. that if John Marshall can do it then we can to.
We all know there is some level of recruiting all over the country in high school sports but I know a lot of people have adopted a "win at all costs" mentality so why don't we see more schools doing this?
A lot to answer but basically having a AA that can recruit all of Richmond plus other places gives them a huge advantage
I think one could reasonably rank Lebanon #1 in 2D as well right now. Still somewhat early in the season but Honaker beating 2D Central and RV in the tourney only to get manhandled by Lebanon shows that maybe I’ve underestimated the Pioneers all year.
Maybe I was a little wrong on your 1d rankings. Chilhowie might be a contender for the region. But I still have to say considering the fact that SV missed around 15 layups i don’t think chilhowie people should be thinking it was a good win
It’s definitely a good win for Chilhowie-however I think they get buzz sawed by Va High today. If they win today then we can start talking region title
5-4 on the year…they were not very impressive. I expected much more…but even still, they should have won-missed about a dozen layups and blew a 6 point lead late. You expect more from a Kentucky team who can play 30+ games a year and 6-12 can play varsity
If The Region Tournaments Started Today........................
