  1. They not only lost to Brooke and Wheeling Central, but were dominated in both games. It's a team Bluefield should beat if the Beavers come out focused and play their game. However, as we all know, anything can happen.

Bluefield and Weir last met in the 1995 or 1996, I forgot which year, AA playoffs. Bluefield won rather easily over a Quincy Wilson (WVU's RB) led Weir squad that day at Mitchell Stadium...

  2. Another game of the night was Hertiage (Lynchburg) and Liberty (Bedford) in another thriller. Liberty got it's revenge for the regular season one point loss to Hertiage by winning 17-14 in OT on a blocked FG.

Virginia's playoff setup sucks in my opinion. There is no way you should have teams as good as that playing in the first round or a team like Salem sitting at home...

  3. Bluefield came out with something to prove tonight and it showed. Bluefield shut down Oak Hill and Marcus Grasty the entire night. Oak Hill finished with 164 yards of total offense, a lot of which came in the 4th against the second teamers. Grasty was held to 64 yards on 20 carries, but was limited to 14 yards on 19 carries by the first team Bluefield defense. Bluefield also did a very good job against the Oak Hill passing game through. Oak Hill did something I’ve never seen, as in the second half OH they lined up with six receivers (three wide on each side) numerous occasions.

Bluefield’s offense was clicking the entire night and the blocking was simply the best I’ve seen from a Bluefield team in years. Bluefield had three backs gain at least 100 yards rushing. It was the Chris Martin show as he rushed for 190 yards and three TDs on 10 carries. Martin also caught a 27-yard TD pass and returned a punt 93 yards that was called back on a bogus illegal blocking call. Jose Steele had 112 yards and two TDs on 14 carries. Derrick Steptoe had 103 yards and two TDs on a mere four carries all in the 4th quarter with the second and third team offense. Quinten Steptoe added a TD run early in the 4th. Bluefield racked up 505 rushing yards and 573 yards of total offense.

On an ending note, my hat goes off to Marcus Grasty. He’s the best player in AA and one of the best players I’ve seen through the years. The kid is a mere 5’7†and that is the only reason he isn’t getting looks from major colleges. He can run like the wind and has a cannon for an arm. Despite the fact he’s broken Bluefield’s heart a couple of times over the past couple of seasons I’ve enjoyed watching the kid perform and I’ll miss seeing him do so. Best of luck to him and hopefully he’ll get to play college football somewhere if he desires to do so. In addition, congratulations to long-time Oak Hill coach Jim Martin on his retirement. He’s been active in the Fayetteville County area with the kids for many years and he’ll be heading to North Carolina after the school year is done.

  4. Not usually unless they're playing Beckley. They could bring a good size crowd tonight though. I know Bluefield probably had the largest traveling crowd of the season at Oak Hill and probably had as many fans as Oak Hill had there that night. The cold will probably keep some away tonight though. I was just outside for two minutes and nearly froze to death. Although, I did have shorts and a t-shirt on...lol

  5. Winning does spoil people/fans. Although, this will be the first playoff game Bluefield will have hosted since the state semi-finals in 1999, so hopefully people will come out and show their support...

  6. Bluefield people need to get off their butt and show the team more support. The Beavers are #1 in the class, have an outstanding team, have only lost once, and the home crowd hasn't been what it should all season. There was a huge Beaver crowd for the Graham game, as usual, but the crowd haven't compared since. I don't care how cold it is, people need to get out and support this team. They deserve it and I'm sure would grealy appreciate it...

  7. The best of the last 10 years and one of the best of all-time IMO is the 1997 Bluefield Beavers. They went 14-0 and cruised to the state title. Second on the list IMO would the 2001 Graham G-Men. It's a real shame those kids couldn't cap off that great season with a state title. The 1996 Bluefield team was very strong as well, but was hit hard with key injures that season...
