  1. I'm surprised it was that close too, honestly I think it would've been much closer, if Marion had their heart in the game. They weren't ready to make that trip and give it 100%.

i disagree with that completely. i was in the stands quite a bit before the game this past friday night and the marion kids were sold out in their pre-game stuff. their kids were definitely up for the game. they gave 100% effort from the opening whistle until the end. they moved the ball decently well and chewed up the clock on several occasions. turnovers cost them though.

as for folks being surprised it was so close.....why? since when is 4 touchdowns and a shutout a close ballgame? martinsville doesn't have the type of offense that just lights up the scoreboard. once the bulldogs were up 2 scores at halftime, they grounded it out the remainder of the night to win and advance. the dogs also accumulated over 100 yards in penalties.

i'm realistic...i don't expect a bulldogs victory this friday. but i also don't expect them to make that long trip just to lay down without a fight.

  2. I would. Martinsville is starting to come together and playing some pretty good ball right now...

i would too. plus martinsville's losses have come to brookville, liberty (bedford), AAA franklin county, magna vista (all of these teams are like 7-1 on the year). their other loss was an early one to another usually stout seminole district heritage (lynchburg).

it's pretty safe to say that the dogs are a notch down from CS and the blue tornado at this point, but probably not anyone else in D3....and yes, that means grundy too.

  3. Martinsville beating Halifax is not that big a deal. Halifax is 1-4 right now and their losses have not been all that close besides the one to MHS.

it could be worse for 2-3 martinsville and/or 1-4 halifax.....they could be 4-0 by playing the likes of twin valley, hurley and haysi.

  4. martinsville had 5 turnovers against brookville - the bees had none.

on the flip side, halifax turned it over 7 times against martinsville.

sometimes it's hard to tell if a team is good or bad, or even to say whether one is improving when the turnover margin is so skewed.

  5. jacob reynolds is the senior qb. he wears #4 and will break off a 70 yard run in a flash.

jalen reyonolds is the junior rb. the 2 are cousins. they're fairly similar in heighth, but jalen is an absolute hoss. he's a pretty good power forward during the winter too! although patrick county is normally known for big, solid kids on the lines, i don't think that's the case this year.

  6. 8/21 North Myrtle Beach @ Conway

8/27 Myrtle Beach @ Carolina Forest

    9/3 Princeton @ Bluefield

north myrtle used to be pretty average...not sure what they have these days. conway is like a small college team. that'll probably be a blowout.

myrtle has everett golson at qb...should be entertaining. too bad it's not at mb, because they've got a great, new stadium.

you should stay with the myrtle beach area theme and go see my alma mater get blown out in morgantown on the 4th. :-(

  7. ...Patrick Co. will likely beat Martinsville next week

boy, it's a sad state of affairs when it's a foregone conclusion that patrick will come into dan greene and leave with a victory. sad but probably very true.

the saddest part is that martinsville is loaded with talented guys. the schedule has been fairly brutal...and watching the offense sputter all year long (ie the victory this past friday at tunstall without an offensive touchdown) has been even more brutal.

the better news...mhs only has 6 or 7 seniors on the roster with only 3 or 4 that actually see much of the field.

  8. someone asked about martinsville's squad in the locked thread below. i don't have much info to pass on, but here's an excerpt from the local paper. i do know that 2 of the goalscorers listed are freshmen.

Roundup: Bulldogs shut out Halifax Co.

    Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Martinsville’s boys soccer team shutout Halifax County 6-0 Monday at Halifax County.

Bulldog Will Reynolds broke the state shutout record in high school soccer with a total of 40 and scored one goal.

Garrett VanNutt had two goals, Hampton Snyder had one goal and three assists, and Zack Corcoran and Ian Loganadan each had one goal.

The Bulldogs (3-1) next will play G.W.-Danville at 5 p.m. Friday at home.

  9. salem and martinsville didn't scrimmage last year for some odd reason. long time coaches willis white and taylor edwards were good friends and salem and mavahi ALWAYS scrimmaged to open the year for as long as i can remember. glad to see them get that scrimmage back going with salem. playing against the best can only make you better.

EDIT - the salem scrimmage game you mentioned is the same date i found for the grimsley scrimmage...wonder which is right? martinsville normally scrimmages william campbell as well.

  10. Martinsville's schedule

Fri 08/21/09 @ Grimsley High School (like last year...this one is a scrimmage for MHS, but a real game for Greensboro, NC - Grimsley)

    Fri 08/28/09 @ Brookville

    Fri 09/04/09 Heritage

    Fri 09/11/09 Morehead

    Fri 09/18/09 @ Liberty

    Fri 09/25/09 @ Halifax

    Fri 10/02/09 Franklin County

    Fri 10/09/09 @ Magna Vista

    Fri 10/16/09 Bassett

    Fri 10/30/09 @ Tunstall

    Fri 11/06/09 Patrick County

3 strong Seminole teams, 2 AAA teams

  11. Maybe that's the case. The 2 dates where it shows them playing 2 games were the first two dates of the season, typically tournaments. But as you said they could have gotten it wrong.

martinsville and gretna did play twice...both games were fairly early in the year. martinsville won the first game at home in a blowout. the game at gretna was much closer (i think mhs won by 4). but then again, you can never beat any pittsylvania county team by much at their place.

  12. looks like you've done some research, but I do believe a lot of it is who ever shows up to play, hustles the most, and has the best attitude

the only problem with all of that is that his research isn't even right....so there goes the "scouting". martinsville (yep, the number 1 seed) did not lose to gretna. he has the outcomes reversed. the bulldogs beat gretna twice.

  13. i saw them last night...fairly athletic as usual. they're kind of young, but their leader is first team PD senior cj mclaughlin. not a lot of height to speak of...and i think they only had 10-11 guys on the team. they had a couple kids that got hot from 3. they had bassett on the ropes in the semis but lost. they were within 3 or 4 of magna vista in the consolation game, but couldn't get over the hump. i wouldn't be surprised at all to see them make the regional finals against either cave spring or martinsville with the way the brackets set up. i agree with gman's opinion...they would certainly contend for the district title in the swd.
