  1. Funny how everyone is on JB's bandwagon when just a week ago everyone thought they were over rated. I am always happy for a school to get this far when they usually struggle in years past. That can be said for both teams in this one.

Battle beating Giles was huge. However, I have stated more than once that Giles had played 1 good defense this year in Christiansburg. I guess Blacksburg was average. That's it. No other team they face even had a decent D. It certainly showed last Friday. The thing about Fort is they are huge on the o-line. They are much better upfront than Giles IMO. There is no reason this thing shouldn't be a great game. Both teams and communities will be in a real frenzyabout "state" if their team wins......enjoy it!

  2. I find some of these arguments to be ridiculous. School buses travel lover's leap and Woolwine Mountain (much worse BTW) everyday in the Patrick County School system. That's a dead argument in my book.

It also needs to be mentioned that travel time from CC to Narrows is 1:17 at best (mapquest).

My opinion is CC needs to man up and head to the Peidmont. No it does not take 1:45 minutes to get to Bassett, Patrick, Martinsville...ect.

In that article, the case is made that CC is not that good and has never won a state title. That may be true now but they can be very good in the future while facing Narrows and Bland. Not too mention that Galax and Grayson for that matter was very poor in football until recently. Who's to say they dont have a decline sooner than later. It's gonna be funny when CC starts hanging MED banners....LOL.

  3. Carroll would rather be in the MED than the River Ridge if it includes Franklin County. Not to long ago, Carroll dropped Floyd in football citing power points as the reason. Truth is, Floyd was beating them at least half of the time. Now they actually want to be in a district where they can play not only D2 but also D1 teams. That's funny.

I am sure they have cited travel as the concern but it seems to me that the Piedmont would fix that situation for them.

  4. Someone must not understand that the "Conferences" are for playoffs only. Districts will remain for regular season and are different from the "Conferences" you linked...

This someone knows that districts mean absolutely nothing after this move. Matter of fact, they mean absolutely nothing in single A right now.

  5. Since you started this discussion lets get down to the numbers....GW 471 students...Richlands 795...Richlands plays Abingdon with 956 and Carroll Co. with 1175...Richlands is playing a benefit game next Sat. against Bassett who has 1208...you don't hear us bellyaching...look...if you have a complaint about scheduling and don't want to play the Clinch River Classic anymore complain to your AD...

Richlands has the program to play some big boys. However, Abingdon, Carroll, and Bassett (scrimmage) are not big boys on the field.

  6. I actually think Richlands will find tougher competition in D2 locally. The last few years the only competition they have seen in D3 is Cave Spring. D2 features some very good teams and now that the playoff system has changed in single A to include teams like Gretna and Riverheads, I think Richlands will be tested earlier in the playoffs than usual.

It also must be said that it will be the opposite if Richlands makes it to the state level. There are not many teams that can stack up to Northside, Brookville, and other elite D3 teams in any of D2.

I for one have thought for several years now that D2 has been better then D3 locally from top to bottom. One must also consider that there are few D3 schools compared to the number of D2s Roanoke and south.

  7. Congrats to Honaker. I remember when Floyd played down there in 1999 when you guys had Heath Miller. That was a wild game.

I honestly don't know anything about Honaker this year except for their schedule and score. I can say that galax is very good. Many athletes on both sides of the ball. I honestly think that Galax may be the team to beat for the state title. Good luck to all.

  8. I'm pretty surprised to see all of the predictions for a marginal Richlands win. Cave Spring is a very good D3 team. They beat Christiansburg which is enough in itself to prove how good they are. Cave played a very tough schedule in the River Ridge. They also face undefeated Northside. Richlands schedule is very weak in comparison. It has been weeks since Richlands has faced a good opponent. Maybe D1 Honaker back 6 weeks ago?

Do some of you realize how bad Tunstall is? They beat Patrick 7-0. Patrick is one of the worse teams in the state in any classification. I see this as a complete dog fight. No easy games from here on out. I would pick Richlands because it is at their place but it can go either way.

  9. This^^^^

It is really hard for some people to realize the decline in enrollements of all the area schools. Richlands and Grundy both had near AAA numbers in the late 80's and up into the 90's. Garden had more students in the early 90's than Richlands does now. Tazewell also had up in the 800-900 student range.

20 years ago you had A schools with more numbers than todays area AA schools.

Wasn't this the exact reason for the playoff change in single A? I remember watching Clintwood face Buffalo Gap for the title and Gap had almost twice the enrollment. As far the numbers, I don't see how it can get any closer than what new system has given us.

  10. I actually feel like Burton is and Clintwood is just a touch behind (regardless of what happened in Independence). Truth be told, however, is that Grayson or Giles very could be the best A team in the west.

Any one of those six can beat the other on any given night. I do think Giles is playing the most consistent ball off the bunch, at this point.

West also includes Gretna, Dan River, and Riverheads.

  11. There are several good teams in D-2 this year....should be interesting.

D-2 is probably better than D-3 in this area, overall.....maybe statewide.

D2 is easily better than D3 in swva....not counting Richlands of course. However, state wide....no way. Northside, Cave Spring, and Brookville just to name a few are very, very good this year. Recently, they have been good every year.

Why would anyone be surprised that Union is good? Combining 2 schools like this, I would be shocked if they weren't good. They have a great shot at going far in the playoffs.

D2 isn't as stout as it has been simply because GW and Radford are now D1. Those 2 teams were annual playoff contenders in D2.

  12. One or two years does not make history

I am sure the last 2 region IV D4 trophies and the last 2 RR trophies mean a lot to Christiansburg's history. C-burg used to scrimmage Floyd and get hammered. I remember when they lost by 40 + points to single A Glenvar in 2001. They have come a long way.

It's hard to match Salem's tradition, at least in this area but no one stays on top forever.
