  1. The Richlands attendance zone extends from Big Creek to Swords Creek.....   They have been annexed, again we need the tax revenue.

Hey..... those of us who have been around will need to get our annual "pre-season" jabs in before it's too late.  It seems to be a regular thing on here each year.

No part of Swords Creek has been annexed by Richlands. Towns aren't allowed to cross county lines. Now, there are sort of isolated little "exclaves" of Russell Co inside of Tazewell county in West Raven and Daw that are only accessible from Tazewell Co. Some parents from Mill Creek, Maple Gap, and Horton Ridge in Russell Co. also send their kids to school in Tazewell Co instead of Russell County and I would assume some parents in Russell Co around SVCC send their kids to school in Richalands instead of Lebanon.

  2. Ultimately, I think that the talent disparity (noted by sixcat) is probably the biggest factor that affects the success of NE Tennessee teams.  Based on the excellent info in the link that sixcat posted, it appears that the NE Tennessee teams are comparable to their class mates in terms of enrollment but that they are geographically isolated (D-B and Science Hill in 6A in particular).  It's also worth noting that the largest Tennessee schools are much smaller than the largest Virginia schools, which means that the Virginia classification system does shield SW Virginia schools to a certain extent from the same talent disparity created by Northern Virginia and Tidewater.

I think a lot of it comes down to disparity between rural vs more urbanized areas or to population density of a school district. No matter their size schools from around Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville, Murfreesboro, Memphis, and Jackson dominate sports at the 1A, 2A, and 3A levels among the public schools. East Tennessee is the most populated section of Tennessee yet when it comes to state championships Middle and West Tennessee dominate by far and the reason is most of the schools in those two sections are mostly concentrated around Nashville and Memphis and their suburbs. The TSSAA actually did a study on this a while back and proposed a four classification system based on urban vs rural counted by population density instead of enrollment because they found that enrollment doesn't actually equate to competitiveness; it has to do with population density of the area served by the school. 1A would be small rural schools, 2A would be small urban/suburban schools, 3A big rural schools, 4A big urban/suburban schools. It makes sense to do things like that if you think about it, East TN has some of the largest schools in the state but many of them are consolidated county schools with a large enrollment but their student body is spread over a large area. You would think all those large schools would do well athletically but they don't.

  3. He is honest and genuine when he calls himself a socialist.  I cannot believe that a significant portion of the US population would even entertain a socialist.  SMH.

The thing is is that even though Sanders says he's a socialist, he's in no way a socialist. Socialism is when the government owns the means of production in the economy and dictates where that production goes to. He's actually more of a Fascist because he advocates privately owned, state directed/regulated industry and a large welfare state. He's basically advocating for the system that already exists in the United States but he wants to massively expand it. We already have a watered down version of Fascism in the United States and so does most of Europe. Just because Germany got rid of their swastikas and concentration camps doesn't mean they gave up Fascism; they're just nicer Fascists now. Either he doesn't really know what socialism means or he's just trying to label his ideas socialism to make them sound all shiny and new and exciting to dumbed down voters. Welfare doesn't neccessarily equate to socialism.

  4. IF they go to 1A then they are where they have to be in the BDD, but if they stay 2A for whatever reason, they should be in the SWD.

They should have never been put in the BDD in the first place as a 2A school...Christian Jackson should have been on one of the "all something" teams this year, kid is all state caliber WR and DB but got nothing.

I thought the entire point of the VHSL changes was to force people to play where they are classified...then you see the SWD get busted up and Grundy stuck in a 1A district as a 2A team. Why bother?  8 to 10 team SWD would solve a lot of problems...and as that goes, the VHSL should go back to the format where winning your district gets you in to the playoffs, then points for the remaining slots...this crap with 1-9 teams going to play 10-0 teams in first round is a waste, not everyone should make the playoffs or have that shot only the best of the bunch. Larger 8+ team districts would breed better competition at a local level, remove schedule issue, and restore traditional rivals...but, whatever...VHSL never has done anything right so why start now.

Yeah or how they put  Marion in the Hogoheegee a few years after they remove Lebanon and John Battle from the the Hogo due to enrollment numbers compared to the rest of the district. That's like putting Virginia High in the Cumberland or Richlands in the BDD.

  5. Im not sure exactly. The BDD came into existence in '78(I think) so '77 would be the last year of the CVD. Before that Haysi started in the LPD so im not sure

Not exactly sure on when the CVD actually came in to existence but a good educated guess would have been in 1970 when the VHSL had its big realignment in to A, AA, and AAA

  6. Not sure who in all was in the old CVD. I do remember that Garden, Whitewood, St. Paul and Pocahontas were in there. Maybe Honaker, Castlewood, Hurley maybe?

Castlewood, Lebanon, Honaker, St. Paul, Twin Springs, Pocahontas, Whitewood, Garden, Hurley, Council, and Haysi. Honaker, Casltewood, and Lebanon left for the Hogo and Twin Springs went to the Cumberland and the remaining schools became the BDD.

  7. That's essentially what I do now.  I subscribe to Netflix ($8.99), Amazon Prime ($8.25), and NFL Now ($2.99).  Everything else is a free app, including WatchESPN.

Hey sixcat, I recently ditched cable myself (AT&T) but this afternoon I tried to stream several games from watchESPN and I get an error saying "unauthorized user"? I'm assuming its AT&T Uverse blocking me from streaming content. I streamed VT vs OSU tonight from another website that popped on a google search but it was full of pop ads and had lousy quality. Any way to stream watchESPN without AT&T blocking me?

  8. I wasn't there for that one, but yes I Honaker lost to Spence and Floyd and it does seem like Honaker run out of time on a comeback bid.

Oh that game was a heart breaker had a chance to tie the game with a chip shot field goal that barely missed.

'02 Honaker v Appalachia was a great one. Appy sneaks one in at the goal line with .5 seconds on the clock after Honaker fumbles deep in Appy territory and wins by a point.

'02 Honaker v Powell Valley. Honaker wins a huge upset 12-9 on a frozen muddy field and afterwards Phil Robbins states "instead of the Super Bowl we played the Toilet Bowl."

  9. Has anyone else ever ate from there its that place in pounding mill that sits off to the side of the road aka "The Wagon" they operate out of that little red trailer up from the bowling alley? I ate there today and that is the best burger i have ever had it was huge and came with a box full of fries I had never stopped by there but after today it will be were i stop for lunch almost every day. They have philly cheesesteaks, chicken, shrimp just about everything just wondering if anyone else had ate there.

I ate there last year right before I left for the Navy, completely forgot the place existed until you brought it up, hopefully it's still there when I come in for leave. The prices were reasonable and the food way better than a big chain.

  10. And it half of Ervintons population end up at Eastside after Dickenson Co consolidation as is the rumor then Eastside will be well over the cutoff number

Are many from Ervinton likely to end up at Castlewood as well?
