  1. quite suddenly this morning. http://www.wvva.com/Global/category.asp?C=123736&nav=menu1358_4
  2. i'm beginning to think that was the one.
  3. yeah, it was... but the "new road" over to it from 83 has been done for some time now. we actually had to move some of the folklife stuff up there last month when enoch's branch washed out.
  4. nothing's for sure around here. Weren't supposed to have fireworks, but that changed. Fair isn't supposed to happen, either. Politics is my understanding.
  5. nowhere that lloyd or I've seen yet
  6. Trying to find when they had a Sat. home game that kicked off after 2:00 (possibly 6:30) in 94, +/- 1 year. Don't know anything else about it. All the old scheds I've found online don't list the times.
  7. My turn. If they aren't going to follow the procedures that other "major" sports do, they shouldn't do it. Driver wasn't notified promptly, back-up test wasn't done by a 2nd outfit (well, they finally DID do that, after Davis said both were positive), and an instant claim that the "mix" couldn't make a positive (did they even THINK about checking this out??). And why wouldn't they follow-up with a hair sample test like JM asked for? I'd call that a Mickey Mouse thing, but that would be an insult to rodents. I'll just go with Daffy. From what I've read, NO list of banned drugs exist, because drivers could then take something that isn't specifically mentioned and nothing could be done about it (yeah, right). Do you really think NONE of their lawyerrs have ever come across the phrase "shall include, but are not limited to, ..." ??? Remember, this is a (supposedly) professionl sports outfit, but a rulebook doesn't even exist. (If it does, please tell ne where I can order it, like I did my baseball & football rule books.) Everyone knows they make things up as they go along to fit the need. Remember Gordon's back-up car at the All-Star race a few years back? Now, I agree that NASCAR had every right to "punish" JM if he didn't follow procedures on submitting a list of meds in a timely fashion. The problem is, they DIDN'T do that. I've seen no punishment mentioned for any non-disclosure issue, if there actually was any. I also found it extremely odd that two HoF candidates were named about the same time the case was being heard. And who was on that short list? A flat-lander and one of the Alabama Gang. Who was missing? A couple of Caolina boys that should be locks - Dale Sr. & Petty. Looks to me like this was an attempt to draw attention away from the (NC) courts. NASCAR ROYALLY screwed the pooch on this one, and by the time they finally figured it out, they had dug a hole so deep, the only thing they could do was keep throwing dirt and hoping the fans would be blinded by it.

  10. I didn't meet them until after graduation. Can't say I've ever met a more different set of twins in my life... except for their musical tastes... a couple of the biggest 'heads in Buchanan Co.
  11. Lance ... Dealer's girl wasn't Martha Maynard, it was Marti Maney. You forgot the Buick dealer at Royal City, where Ruffino's Pizza was. Jerry's Hotel burned down in the mid 70's... I was in the hospital on the ped. wing when that happened and we could see and the smoke hang over town all day. The Ben Franklin basement was my fav. shopping place... always had bicycle parts and a wall full of fish, gerbils & hamsters. The old drive-in at Vansant was where I saw my first Cheech & Chong movie back around '79, "Up In Smoke". Of course, that was after they quit showing flicks like "Debbie Does Dallas" and "Revenge of the Cheerleaders" (I actually have the national radio ad for that one on 45). The Lynwood was the site of my first "date" (wonder how many hundreds of other ppl. would say the same thing?)... Corvette Summer, with Annie Potts and a kid named Mark Hamill. Also took the girl next door there to see Saturday Night Fever when I was in Jr. High. You also forgot how hoppin' the Anchorage Shopping Center was in the 70's & 80's, with Adam & Eve's "stuff" and The Brass Ring/Clancy's nightclub. ASL hasn't done much for the economy, because there's nothing here for them to spend their money on. A little coffee shop across the creek is about it. Something like a TGIF's or a nightclub would help. Grundy will never be the same. ------- I'd kinda like to hear some of the stories ppl. have on me, because most of the stories I tell aren't Grundy-based, other than taking a girl home from the street dance 1 year in the old Winnebago. (That thing got a lot more use than the odometer ever showed!) I'd argue that as many girls from around Hillsville & Stuart knew me in the mid 80's as did in Grundy. And I'm sure the wrestlers from 87-92 have a couple (esp. from the Duals). Guppy & I rehashed a couple with 1 of his co-workers 1 night a few years ago after he came back. ------ Lloyd's book is also at Vansant Food City, and we both carry copies with us, so they'll be avail. in the Fall in Richlands and anywhere the Wave play.
  12. Lloyd told me a while ago he died yesterday. Funeral is Sat. at 1 at Junior's. http://www.grundyfuneralhome.com/Obituary%20Files/hursel%20Jack%20Carroll%20Riffe.htm
  13. WCYB said Dewey Brown (along with his wife Lesley from Abingdon) & Ralph's grandson Lesley Stanley were seriously injured when their car was hit from behind by a drunk driver in NC. Here's the BHC story : http://www.tricities.com/tri/news/local/article/members_of_ralph_stanleys_band_rear-ended_by_drunk_driver_in_n.c/25907/ and a blog entry ... http://www.thebluegrassblog.com/nathan-stanley-dewey-brown-update/
  14. hard to get some coaches/AD's to return callls during mid/late June for some reason.
  15. right... an increase of 1/10 cent for 50 days in a row means prices are only up a nickle. So I pulled out my sheet and looked at the prices I've paid recently. I bought gas at the Exxon across the road on June 18 for 2.59.9 and on March 28th for 2.09.9. That's 50 cents over 50 days. Your actual numbers may vary (I paid less than $2 for Exxon in April, but it was in Doran and I don't know what the price was here) .
  16. I mean, in these sports, each Region will have their own format... like D will take 4 teams per Div., C will take 6 using a different system, etc.
  17. yeah, but soon this mess spreads to baseball, softball, etc., and every sport will have it's own format.
  18. Oh, by the way.... the reason we have this f'd up thing to start with is because of this.... the first year we had Divisions, it WAS split at the state level, but Region B only had 3 teams in Div. 1, so all of then got in, and poor George Mason was 0-10, and that didn't set well with a lot of people. Well, now Mason is bigger than Grundy and is just 10 students short of being bigger than EVERY school in Region C. And Region B would be down to 2 schools in Div. 1, with Altavista 1 student away from being Div. 2. And the AA split would be at 1075. Basically, Regions I, III & IV would lose 2 each to Div. 3, while Region II would have 7 schools move up to Div. 4. Each Region would need 11 or 12 teams, so Reg. IV would be just right in Div. 3, but would pick up 5 schools from Region III in Div. 4. Not that it would really matter, because the western-most D4 team would be Carroll Co.
  19. That's what I get for trying to do this stuff at 3 in the morning. 8 games = 16 teams on each side of the bracket = 32 total x 8 champs = 248 getting in Seems like way too many, but it's like our set-up... only way to make sure those 8-2 teams in tough districts get in also allows those 2-8 guys in. I was actually working on that last night, too (which may have been another reason I got the NC numbers screwed up). But I kept coming up with 447.5 as the split to get 43 teams in each half. Regions C & D would have 15 each in D1 while A&B combined only have 13. That means 6 or 7 Region C teams would be "adopted" by Region B... Parry, Covington, Bath, Craig, East Mont, Auburn & Radford. Yep, the east/west split would go through Pulaski. In D2, Region A would have 8, Regions C & D would have 7 each, so Region B's 21 makes up hallf of the Division. Can't exactly put A, C & D on 1 half, so 7 or 8 of the Region B teams would move to the west. To make it easier on Region A, we'll take the teams along 81 ... Luray, Riverheads, SJ-Q, Page, Buffalo Gap, Strasburg, Clarke & Central-Woodstock. Now the east/west line comes down 81 to Roanoke, then 220 to NC. Now, those B guys move to C, so C will have to lose 4 of their 7. Region D would get Wythe, Chiswell & Grayson Co. Meaning C woud run from Giles to Front Royal. It's a real mess. Still think the easiest and best move is to go to 5 classes of 64 teams each.
  20. Incorrect... it's based on records for the wild cards (I forgot to mention that all conf. champs get in) If you're thinking about the "half plus one" rule, that's not used for football. See page 52 : http://www.nchsaa.org/intranet/downloadManagerControl.php?mode=getFile&elementID=5876&type=5&atomID=6445 One other thing... in 4A, a couple of Fayetteville teams were in the WEST, while Greensboro fell in the East in 3AA. (http://www.highschoolot.com/content/story/3924955/) And here's a story on how they determine who's big and who's small... http://www.highschoolot.com/content/story/3864840/ (paragraphs 3 & 4) And a 2007 story about the screw-up of 1 team having their opponent changed from ER to NR to M in under 24 hours and a #13 seed being corrected to a #4 seed http://www.varsitync.com/sports/conference-633-nchsaa-cloninger.html Wrong...it's 16 per "division", 32 per class, so 128 total. 4-6 was the worst record in 4AA, 4A, 3AA, 2AA & 2A. In 3A, only 1 team worse than 5-5 got in (yes, they were 2-8). In Class A, 9 teams got in at 2-8. (See: http://www.highschoolot.com/content/story/3924955/) They changed it back to cross-districting in the 1st 2 rounds last year. Yeah, KY had some 0-10 teams in last year, but almost everyone knew who/where they were playing BEFORE their last regular season game. And I love their rule that says "No playoff game shall be scheduled or played on a date or time that requires a loss of school time", yet the 1A state finals started at 11 am on a Friday.
  21. Well, Vick's sentence had a little more behind it than just the dogs http://weblogs.dailypress.com/sports/etcblog/2009/06/equal_justice.html
  22. National Association of Athletic Trainers are behind it. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/highschool/06/18/heat.guidelines.ap/index.html
  23. Bland has a couple of errors, as does Fort Chiswell, Parry McCluer & Thomas Walker. 1st draft ALWAYS has a lot of errors. I found over 60 this year. VHSL needs time to fix them all since some AD's/coaches are hard to get up with right now. Check it again in a month and the mistakes will be down to less than 10.
  24. One local TV station just reminded us to "stay off CORDED phones during thunderstorms". Are cordless & cell phones safe?
