  1. The train whistle is Gate City Football. Some of the old timers like me can still remember the old steam whistle we used to have mounted on a flatbed. The crowd would be in the stands and when Old Blue would come through Moccasin Gap from Weber City they would start blowing the whistle (you could hear it VERY GOOD) and the crowd would erupt in cheers. This tradition has gone on as long as I can remember with a whistle/horn blowing. I've saw games where the steam whistle blew so much, well, it ran out of steam! It all goes back to a song written in the late 60' early 70's to the tune of Wabash Cannonball and of course it's titled...

  2. Not sure about this folks but heard from a pretty reliable source that its on the board to cease any Tazewell County team from playing Gate City after this year. From what I understand this all started with the Tazewell/Gate City game with the fans and cheerleaders. So folks get ready you may not see Tazewell, Richlands or any other Tazewell County teams playing Gate City anymore. From what i understand its not only Tazewell taking this to the school board. Im not throwing out blame b/c I wasn't there and didn't see it, but if its true from what I hear then it is very rude and uncalled for. Once again I don't know what happened but I would hate to see Richlands and GC not play anymore.

First I had heard about this. If it is true it is sad. But I would also like to hear both sides of the story. I can't understand why in the world they would be on the track and not inside the fence as the track is usually very crowded with people walking to and from the concessions/rest room.

  3. I think a lot of people over rate DB because of their size and the fact they can roll over teams like Sullivan North, South, and Central. Gate City played North for several years and North won 2 games. When the Indians roll out of their region it is a different story. DB is a finesse team for the most part and a good, physical team that can defend the pass will have plenty of success with them. There are several team in SWVA that on given years could beat DB and on most years there are 2-3 teams that could play with them. Don't let the mystique of a mythical title won in 1920 fool ya. Heck if most schools in SWVA could have their town annex entire comunities to reap their best athletes we'd all have 2,000 kids.

  4. I'm not for sure if you could use Seymour as a very good measuring stick. While they are 2-1 their only other win was against a winless Cocke Co. team who they defeated 22-0. Cocke Co's other losses were to Cherokee 24-6 and Knox Carter 65-0. So is Breathitt or Seymour teams to measure by this year?
