  1. Since the offseason moves are starting and will only pick up from here on out, I figured I'd go ahead and start the 2013 thread to document some of the news between now and Spring Training.

    So with that...

David Ross just signed a 2-year $6.2 million deal with the Red Sox (ATL offered 2 years at $3.25 million). Can't really blame him for chasing that type of money at age 36 this late in his career as a backup, but it definitely sucks. I don't think we'll find anyone who was as productive as him when McCann was on the bench.

  2. I would move to Canada but they have free health care too...

Unrelated to the thread as a whole, but just a gem I think I thought I'd throw into this portion of the discussion.

Even with Canada's free/socialized health care system, they still rank #6 on the Heritage Foundation's Index of Economic Freedom. Four spots higher than the United States (who is ranked #10).

    Carry on.

  3. I think they will sign Nick Swisher to play left field and sign victorino to play center and prado moves to third base......... I also have heard a rumor but probably wont happen the braves are offering tommy hanson and julio teheran to the royals for Mike Moustakas which plays third base so if that happens then who knows

I'd like to see the Braves sign Victorino honestly. He's coming off one of his career worst seasons but if you look at the stats they are still productive. Productive enough to suffice if Prado, Freeman, McCann, Heyward, and Uggla all stay healthy and produce.

I like Swisher too but another option would be to sign Victorino as a LF and go after BJ Upton in center. He's young and talented and might just need a change of scenery to turn out his potential.

I think we can get out of this offseason without letting go of any pitching. Then we can hold to them as trade bait if/when we need it when the regular season rolls around.

  4. I know many people don't agree with this, but there's just as many who do: I'd love to see what Bud Foster would be able to do as HC.

It would be interesting... but there is definitely a reason that Bud Foster hasn't ever been the head man of a football program and he won't be one at Tech either.

  5. We would never win more than four games during his tenure. And his tenure would last for at least the 10-15 years Frank is AD. What is there to suggest that he is a competent head coach? Ship him off to the Sun Belt for a couple years, see how he does there, then bring him back if he seems solid.

Agreed, but apparently lots believe his stint at USC(e) as position coaches and special teams and recruiting coordinator have paved the road for him. I dunno, but like you I doubt it. Regardless, if he was ever offered the VT job then he's going to get his fair share of time to "right" the ship, IMO. Lots of people thought VT gave Beamer way too much time in the beginning (hindsight is 20/20 for sure) and I'm sure Shane will be graced with the same opportunity (read: x>5 years).

There are a lot of good lower level head coaches (Gus Malzahn) and BCS coordinators (Kirby Smart) that I believe would be a much better alternative to Shane in the beginning. I'm not ignoring the fact that Shane Beamer will be a future VT HC though; it's just a matter of how soon.

Before I get too deep, I want to clarify that I am not saying we fire Frank at all because I do think he still has some more miles left in him. I do believe though that its time to get tough on him and give him the ultimatum to either 1.) make some necessary changes on your staff or 2.) stick your neck out for them and hope you don't hang yourself.

  6. If they do not re-sign Bourn they will not make the playoffs in 2013, period.

Go ahead and write them off because I'd bet almost anything that we don't resign him. We will definitely offer something pretty sweet like 3 years for $30-odd million, but someone will definitely offer a contract like 5 to 6 years for $60-some million.

Someone is going to overpay Bourn this off-season and it won't be Atlanta. He'll be 30 going into next season and locking into a long-term deal with him is a risky decision that a lot of teams can't afford or will be willing to do.

  7. Since we all believe there is no way Bourn returns, there is a key to where we find a bat. I think Simmons can take over at leadoff. His bat was better than expected, and he has the speed to make things happen. Another key will be whether Francisco can play defense. He has tons of power, and being an everyday guy would probably help his average, but he hasnt had the ability to play D well enough to be an everyday player.

I think we'll go for and sign someone like Victorino to replace Bourn.

  8. Some may laugh at this, but when kids were allowed to settle their differences themselves, when fists were used instead of guns and knives, we were a lot better off not only as young people, but as a country as a whole. We have become a country of over-protective wussies.

I agree, but unfortunately, the rest of society doesn't see it that way.

Prime example was last Friday night at a WV high school football game. A Tygarts Valley student was stabbed to death by another kid during an altercation in the parking lot before kickoff.

Supposedly, the kids fought at school earlier that day and one kid must've got his ass kicked by the other. So what does the loser do? He comes back out later, finds the winner, stabs him 4 times and the victim ends up dying a few hours later.

Lots of punks out there that deserve more than an ass kicking.

  9. Surprised that I missed that one.

I do find a difference, though. There's a difference in (1) a guy wanting to get laid by hitting on everyone even remotely qualified and (2) doing the same thing for sport. With the first, you're doing it to satisfy a desire, and the motive's honest. With the second, you're doing it to be an [insert long string of expletives], and the motive's fraudulent.

But then again, that high school was the same one that produced our George Huguely, so maybe it's something in the water there. Maybe it's just the state of Maryland in general.

I think your number 1 qualifies as your number 2, but agree to disagree there. I just don't see chasing tail just to get laid as real "honest", IMO, and the motive is ultimately the same - to say or do anything to get a piece of ass. 99.9% of all high school boys usually brag about their conquests to their buddies whether its with a random hookup or a steady girlfriend. It's a badge of honor at that age and basically a competition to "one-up" your peers. A competition much like fantasy league point standings. Only thing different is actual documentation.

Yeah, I didn't really want to throw Huguely into the mix in my first post because he wasn't really relevant in event of sexcapades, but his attitude and demeanor are certainly indicative of the typical private school culture. Most of those kids go into adulthood with no real understanding of the real world, and are hardly ever held accountable for reckless actions. Daddy's money can get you out of a lot things, and although its happened before, murder usually isn't one of those things.

  10. Happened in 2010 at Landon Boys School in Maryland too...

Nothing new, IMO. I know people don't like to hear it, but females have always been "prey," especially for the hormone raged teenage boys. Guys have always used girls for one specific thing. It happened when we were in high school and its happening now.

Girls should definitely be aware, but like I said its not exactly groundbreaking info. Every teenage movie dating back to the 80's have almost always had some plot of getting laid by any means necessary. These kids know the drill.
