  1. offensive linemen can cut anywhere in the box, while the ball is in that area - the box is basically from tackle to tackle, within a yard or two (give or take) of the LOS....you can cut any defender that is in the "box" at the snap of the ball, whether a run or pass...if a LB walks up and shows his blitz, he can be cut - as long as it happens in the "box"

  2. It is possible, and somewhat common, for kids to change schools without moving - the thing that allows them to do so is that the division superintendent can overrule the VHSL transfer rule - all he/she has to do is write a letter saying that the transfer is for "non-athletic" reasons....even though most of the transfers are for athletic reasons, who is going to prove it???

It is very frustrating to say the least. I know of a situation that happened where a student attended what I will call school A as a 9th and 10th grader; started his 11th grade year at school A, playing varsity football through the first 2 games, against opponent 1 and 2...then a week later transferred to school B (in the same school system)....and started on special teams for school B that Friday.....and even ended up playing against opponent 1 and 2 again, as well as playing against school A....all made possible by a superintendent waiver. That is insane and should have never happened in a million years, but it definitely happened.

  3. Just a few from Abingdon from about 1980 on that went on to play college ball - I know they had some very good players in the 60s and 70s too, just don't know names

Mark Briscoe - lettered @ VT

Steve Knight - started on OL @ UT, drafted by Colts

Eric Smith - HS All-American, lettered @ VT

Will Colley - recruited as a TE, started on OL @ UGA

    Sean Lucas - started @ OLB/S @ VT

    Jamie Harless - NCAA D3 All-American @ Emory & Henry

  4. Seth Curry will be a nice addition for Duke, and I think Dawkins will step up as well; they also have some very good incoming recruits: Kyrie Irving (6'2"/172, #1 PG) and Tyler Thornton (6'2"/180, PG); Joshua Hairston (6'9"/220, #7 PF), as well as JC transfer Carrick Felix (6'6"/190, SF)......if Singler and Smith are back, they will be very good again. The Plumlee brothers should be really good too, but it is very early. Nobody really said they had a championship caliber team coming into this year either, but they just came together......long time between now and next basketball season so who knows what may happen. I'm a Duke fan, but I have to admit UNC could be unbelievable over the next few years with their returning players and incoming recruits!

  5. Don't forget...followed by a resounding defeat by the likes of Radford, Giles or Floyd in the playoffs...

That is ....IF the current trend continues....I hope Graham turns it around and compete with the "big boys" of Region C if/when they make the playoffs...

MED is very weak district in football,s Graham should have a pretty easy road to getting to playoffs, but once they're there...tough road ahead... the TRD is definitely one of the best A districts in the state....HOGO not too shabby either.

If the current proposal passes the exec. committee, they will not have to worry about Radford, GW, or CHI - they will be division 1 in 2011......IF it passes, which who knows what will happen there......Graham could make a nice run - Floyd and Giles of course will have something to say about that, but other than those two it could be wide open!

  6. Abingdon won the Highlands District in 92 - I wouldn't call Gate City or Lee (during that time) "weak as pee"....the others maybe, but not those two. The losses for AHS that year were at Lebanon and at Tazewell in regular season, and at Richlands in region finals. For the more recent appearances, they were totally outmatched at Gate City in 95 and at Grundy in 96; they should have beaten CC in 03, but they didn't.....they were competitive in the 70s and 80s - not the same story since
