after watching the game on film, something I don't understand maybe someone can tell me.sc was called for unsportsman when one of the sc players started mouthing off after a tackle, dont kno what he said(assumed he used foul language) but the ref throwed the flag.i always thought unsportsman was automatic first down, but it was not in this case.3rd down.
Unsportsmanlinke is 15 yards but NOT an automatic first down.
Personal Foul is 15 yards but NOT an automatic first down.
Roughing passer or punter is 15 yards AND automatic first down.
Actually 1inStripes there was post in one of the forums that said:
"From what I read the decision was made last year with all parties concerned. Sunday, Coach Moore asked for an extension of another year and it was denied. "
So I guess you are right. Just doesn't seem like a fitting end for such a Coach and person.
This decision was made around 8 months ago. Moore just wanted it not to be made public.
Don't know if you read the link but the fourth paragraph doesn't really indicate that. It states:
The crux of what people want to know is how much of this was Jerry’s decision? Did Cobb basically force him out? Was this a 50/50 decision? In the Winston-Salem Journal article by the man who broke the news, Jerry indicated he was focused on coming back next year. According to The Charlotte Observer’s story, Jerry tried to ask for one more year Sunday morning, but Cobb wouldn’t let him. To many, this will be considered a villifying act for Cobb to refuse Jerry’s request. As Athletic Director, the decision should be Cobb’s to make, but Jerry is seen as such an icon that many people feel he earned the right to call the shots on his exit. This will also make it seem to people that the original decision in January was all Cobb’s. In my opinion, it was at least in some way Jerry decision as if it was up to the AD’s office, they would have promoted the “Jerry Moore Farewell Tour†to sell tickets in a down year at the gate.
I'm not trying to argue but I'm just relaying what the article said. If it was decided 8 months ago, why on earth were they so quick to make the announcement just hours after the sting of this playoff loss. Why not wait a week or so if it had already waited this long? Something doesn't smell right to me but what do I know.
Within in a 24-hour period, ASU fans endured a one-two punch of shocks that has shaken this program to its foundation. First, the Mountaineers took the field in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs against Illinois State. After coming back from a 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime, the Apps’ season came to an end on a blocked PAT as ISU won 38-37. This was around 6 pm on Saturday night. Despite the shock and anger of many fans, the sun rose on Sunday. However at 4 pm Sunday afternoon, in the midst of another Panthers’ failure, Tommy Bowman broke arguably the biggest ASU news possible (even bigger than an FBS move). Jerry Moore’s 24-season tenure at Appalachian State was over.
24 Seasons
10 SoCon Championships
Overall Record: 215–87 (.712)
Southern Conference Record: 144–40 (.783)
18 Playoff Appearances
3 National Championships
Lot's of speculation on the Appy State message boards. Appy State has been looking to move from the FCS (Div. I AA) to the FBS (Div. I) and from what I gather Coach Moore wasn't real enthused about that. His contract is up in June and the AD decided it was time to change directions. Some are speculating an FBS announcement is perhaps forthcoming too which would not be surprising with all the conference realignment that is going on.
They could vote 6-0 against them but if they have single a numbers, and they do they will be in the hogoheegee.
You don't think they will even consider putting them in the Clinch Mountain Dist which has a lot of the old Southwest District teams in it? Teams such as Battle, VA High, Gate City, Lee.
After looking at a thread over at the LPD Forum I did a little research on the LPD and got these numbers:
Powell Valley Champions 1998, 1997, 1995, 1994, 1990, 1989, 1985, 1982
Runner Up 2004
Appalachia Champions 1997, 1996, 1994, 1992, 1989, 1971
Runner Up 2002, 1993, 1980
Clintwood Champions 2011, 1978, 1975, 1974
Runner Up 2008, 2007, 1973
JJ Kelly Champions 1981
JI Burton Champions 1972
Runner Up 2009, 2006, 2005, 2004, 1998, 1990
Pound Runner Up 1999
Gate City Champions 2003 (I think Gate City was in the LPD in 2003)
That is 21 Championships and 14 Runner Ups from 1970-2011
From 1986 to 2011 there have been two divisions in Single A football. So that is two championship games per year in Single A for 25 years which totals 50 state championship games in that span.
From 1970 to 1985 there was one division thus 1 game for each of those 15 years.
So there have been a total of 65 State Championship games since 1970.
Out of 65 State Games, 35 of them have had and LPD team in them which is over half. And in 21 of those they won the Title.
There may be errors, you guys correct me where I'm wrong. I have cross referenced the info at VHSL and vhsl-reference.com to get these figures.
