I live between exits 5 and 7 in Bristol and didn't feel anything, but one of my friends working on State Street and some people I know in Abingdon said they felt it. Some news reports said it was felt from the Carolinas all the way up to Canada.
I'm putting my money on Lee finishing 2nd in the CMD this year. I think the game with GC will be a good one, but I just don't see Lee winning it. I really hope Battle does turn some heads this year. Sounds like we got a really good (known) coach, but it'll take some time to adjust and unless we have a lot of good young runners coming up, we lost our running game to graduation, which is gonna hurt.
I don't see why we can't throw party aside and vote for the candidate. That's what I do. I think people who blindly cast their vote for either Dem/Rep are ignorant because they claim whichever one to be "thiers."
Also, have the representatives vote for whatever will help their district/state, not what will help their party.
Also, the media doesn't help either. It essentially brainwashes people. Kind contradicting myself since I'm an aspiring journalist (sports mind you and not this political mumbojumbo)
That's what I tell everyone, don't pay attention to the party, look at the individual candidates. Also people need to pay more attention to local and state politicians (everyone just wants to blame the President or federal Congress, but never pay attention to state government or local governments).
Coach told my brother that Battle has in the 50's right now. That's about where they seem to stay each year at least since 06 (they would drop to about 25 halfway through the season before then).
In one of the current threads someone mentioned Narrows was AA at one time, I was just wondering what VA schools used to be AA and have dropped? Also what were their enrollments(roughly) during their AA days. Some of the schools I know but not many and I have no idea on enrollments. The drop year would also be nice. Lets say schools that dropped into regions C or D. Throw former AAA schools that dropped to AA in there too(some of the Roanoke schools?).
Gate City dropped '01
Grundy dropped '11
Graham dropped '11
George Wythe dropped in '91
Radford
Patrick Henry dropped '88
JS Battle '94
Lee dropped '06
Virginia dropped '06
Lebanon dropped in '91, moved up in '96, dropped again in '01
VHS and Lee dropped in the 07-08 school year, not 06 (that was my senior year and Battle was in it's last year of the Hogo while Lee and VHS were in the last year of the Highlands, Clinch Mtn. was formed the next year).
As aggrivating as it may be, if they don't follow through on something is the one time it is a real threat. How many people on here went through a bomb threat in high school and never found anything?
Just like the Boy Who Cried Wolf. We really do have to be extra careful now, aggrivating as it may seem.
The title of that piece says it all. When election time comes around, our oh so wonderful government "representatives" forget about what the people really want or what really needs to be done and only worry about trashing competition in the other party so they'll look good enough to get re-elected. This goes for both parties, I'm afraid, yet everyone insists it's only the "other party".
I guess the worst school massacre in US history has got everyone in the country on edge, kind of like how the media freaks out about every little crime now since 9/11 happened. I hope they find out for sure though if it was a gun. Not knowing will probably be worse for some people than knowing that it was a gun.
There's usually a lot of good ones at Virginia Intermont in the smaller bathrooms that don't get a lot of attention. I'll have to see if I can write some of them down (assuming they didn't paint over them all....they're renovating about every building on campus and the bathrooms are the first targets).
So sports like football and volleyball will get the least amount of practice time overall while sports like baseball and softball will get the most practice time (assuming enough come out to practice that early for those sports)?
I haven't been involved with the WCAA (the county league the Battle kids play for) in a while, so I can't remember anyone's contact info off the top of my head. But I think you can call the Washington County Virginia Recreation Dept. at 276-525-1385 or 276-525-1387 and ask for contact info.
I'm not a golfer, so I don't know about par or anything, but there's courses all over Bristol and the surrounding area. Clear Creek in Bristol, VA, is $8.50 during the week and $11 on the weekends for 9 holes. Steele Creek at Steele Creek Park in Bristol, TN, is $9 week and $10 weekend for 9 holes.
Just saw a news report that said her defense plans to rest on Thursday (tomorrow). I don't know much about court, but does this mean it's about over? Also, when did Florida get rid of the death penalty?
Seems like it took no time at all for John Battle and Virginia High to name their new head coaches. I don't know if it's just all the talk from everyone being impatient (I've never really followed Graham's programs or anything in the past, but even I'm getting a little impatient now) or whatever, but it does seem like it's been taking a really long time to announce this.
The bus trip to school for some would be a monster, but that's true for most county schools, like Floyd County.....some of those kids are on a bus for 45 minutes to get to and from school.
I didn't ride the bus in high school because the ride from John Battle to my house and vice versa was at least an hour, and I only live 15 minutes from the school.
I had never been to any athletic events at a large college or the pros until I went to a Washington Redskins game (they played Buffalo the week Sean Taylor died). Those fans were already drinking heavily at 7 in the morning and didn't stop until they stopped selling alcohol at the end of the 3rd quarter (and I'm sure they went straight for the booze after the game ended). Extremely drunk fans+commercial timeouts=too much time to do stupid things. The police and security were constantly on their toes taking out Skins fans throwing stuff at Bills fans and constantly wanting to fight. I can only imagine what it will be like at a place like WVU (or any major college).
So did anyone feel an earthquake?
