  1. Other than Thurman, VHS has had good coaches recently...they just refuse to keep 'em for some reason.  I hope the coaching merry-go-round is over now.  Funny how things change though.  Back in my day, Abingdon and VHS were 2 good programs.  Richlands and JSB were not.  What a reversal of fortunes.

  2. When the inmates are running the asylum, we don't have much of a chance.  I did not know that Rasnick was fired.  I would love to have seen the parents try to run off Fred Fisher (football), Ballard Lee (Basketball) or Eddie Icenhour (baseball) back in the day.  Burrhead Bradley (AD) would have told them (parents) to take a hike.  Sorry to see how times have changed at VHS.

    sorry...double post..

  3. The same player that got Wheeler ran off also got our basketball coach (Rasnick) fired, all cause his dad is on the school board. Do not vote for Tyrone Foster

  4. Jethro, I can't wait for the day we can consistently play with Gate City, but it ain't happening until we have a stable head coaching situation.  I mean we have talent, we have facilities, we have support.  We just need a coach to stay long enough to put it all together.

I am afraid we are a baseball only school  for the foreseeable future.  Hope Crist can hang in there and make a go of it.

  5. It's definitely gloom and doom for gc. What my source has told me at while we are the job is that the fit has hit the shan. Just based on the stories I he told me their program has fighting within the coaches; which not good for the kids. If the Cats dont win by more than 20 I'll be disappointed.

I think your source played you like a fiddle!

  6. I don't trust all those "gloom and doom" reports coming out of Gate City.  I hope the Bearcats are primed and ready for a tough game.  We haven't had a lot of success down there...and it is almost impossible to win a game there if the score is close; you have to' win by more than 2 scores.

  7. VHS handled them rather easily last year. I expect this years game to be more competitive since it is at Gate City. But it is Gate City's homecoming so they may not be totally focused but they should be out for revenge after last year. I think VHS wins a close one based on what I know about VHS and what I read about Gate City.

Any other thoughts? I haven't seen Gate City play this year and don't know a lot about this years team.

  8. There are just way too many distractions on homecoming week. That is why you should try to schedule a weaker opponent for that game. I know, you can't tell from one season to the next who is going to be stronger but I would try to schedule a historically weaker program for HC. And I know that many will say that playing a weaker team hurts in the long run. I say bull crap. These are teenagers and are easily distracted. I doubt it is as harmful by beating a cupcake than losing to a team you probably beat w/o all the distractions. Not taking anything away from Honaker. They may well have won this game at any point in the schedule. Next cycle, JSB should schedule the Little Sisters of the Poor for HC.

  9. "...the bearcats haven't been relevant in SWVA football as long as I've been alive.    The best group I'd guess is the group in the late 80's with Lucky Daggs?"

We were a very good football team in the late 70's to early 80's under Fred Fisher. Lee Wagner, Milton Franklin, Oakley Clay, Allen Helton, etc were all really good. Rat Chansler before that but back then, an 8-2 team seldom made the playoffs.

Can't say we have done much since then (at least on a consistent basis).

Hope not all VHS fans are lumped in with Jethro...he is just a little naïve and insolent.

  10. No you can't.  I would never, ever sit with or support the opposition if they are playing the Bearcats.  The thought would never have occurred to me.

You just don't get it and nothing I can say will help you to understand.  Unfortunately, too many VHS supporters have your mentality. It doesn't matter one iota.  Go sit with the opponents.

  11. I think VHS is gradually getting the concepts of the new coach.  And I see that he is adapting his concepts to the players he was.  I see improvement in the adjustments every week.  If, and that is a big if, VHS can put it all together this week, they have a real shot in this game.  Their team speed is really good.  And they are a little unpredictable as the coach is figuring out what works, what doesn't, who should play where, etc.  Should make it a harder to game plan for.  But Richlands is still Richlands and I wish we were not following the LB game...I expect the Tornadoes to play with a chip on their shoulder and out to prove something.

  12. Battlechick, I guess you are not real familiar with sarcasm?  But I do root for Battle when playing anyone else.

V-Cat...I doubt you based on your statements on this board.  Go sit with Richlands fans.  On second thought, why don't you see just how many of your Richland buddies will sit on the VHS side, especially if VHS is winning!

  13. As far as who to cheer for, it would be different if this was Battle and VHS, because we're actually rivals. If it came down to it and I had to pick sides, I'd pick the 'Cats.

Oh, and why is there so much hate for the V-Cats logo? Personally, I like much better than some plain, ordinary Bearcat (like the ugly 50 yard line stencil that Reed put in)

Too each his own but tradition must stand for something. Why the dislike of the name you used?  Because we are BEARCATS not the name you choose to illicit.  And as an alum, I can't believe you would even have to "pick sides"...just another example of what is wrong with VHS and why we may NEVER develop into a real football program.  Maybe you should just sit on the oppositions side...we need true believers and supporters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. I say sit where you want and don't worry about NONSENSE. Keep in mind , if you sit on the VHS side you will be mighty lonely as our fans don't have the grumption to drive past exit 10 to support our team.

Well you are correct in that VHS does not travel very well.  We have basically no football tradition to speak of (at least not since Fred Fisher left).  But if our alumni that do travel to the games can't bring themselves to sit on the VHS side then when will that mentality ever change?  That is unless you travel to Battle, where everybody just loves the Trojans and sits on their side just because they are so darn lovable.

  15. Couldn't wait to start the discussion. I am torn about this one, I was raised a Blue Tornado [my dad grew up in Richlands] but I'm a proud VHS alum; haven't decided where I'm going to sit on Friday. This game will likely decide the SWD crown, should be a good game

A VHS grad and not sure which side to sit on...no wonder you use that "V-Cats" nonsense instead of Bearcats. Here is my homer pick:  Bearcats in a very close one.

  16. What a troll! We get it...... you dislike John Battle. You have given the John Battle fans hell on the old CMD board, the Mountain Board and now you have followed them over here to this site. If you are really 35, grow the f*** up and talk about something else other than John Battle football, fans and innocent players. You should be worried why Virginia High is a paper champion. God knows they have no hardware in the trophy case for football.

No need to attack VHS and their innocent players because of one somewhat delusional poster.

  17. Bleachers ain't cheap fellows.  I recently read about a private school in Central VA spending $330,000 just for home bleachers from the 20 yard line to the 20 yard line, 15 rows deep.  That included a press box but no concession stands or bathrooms.  All new bleachers have to be enclosed and ADA approved.

The same school put in an artificial surface for another $800,000.  No new seating for the visitors side.  I'd be afraid to guess at the additional cost of a lighting system, scoreboard, bathrooms, concessions, etc.  After reading this, I'd say $1,000,000 for a decent stadium isn't unreasonable.
