I beleive this game suprised us all, for the simple fact that montcalm couldnt lose a game, and bluefield was the underdog and expected to get blasted away, well it didnt happen like that. Congratulations to the beavers for being at the 500 mark and defeating the previously unbeatin lady generals

MONTCALM - By the slimmest of margins, the Bluefield Lady Beavers on Friday night ended the Montcalm Lady Generals' dream of a perfect season.

Stephanie Wallace's foul shot with no time left on the clock made the difference in the 62-61 ballgame at the Montcalm gym, as the walls echoed with fans' screams.

Wallace's final point, her 29th of the game, thwarted a titanic comeback by the home team. In the final quarter, MHS outscored Bluefield 25-15 to nearly overcome an 11-point deficit at the end of the third period.

The underdog Lady Beavers executed a game plan that highlighted their quickness. Steals and fast-break baskets kept Montcalm off-balance. Often the home team was limited to one shot as Bluefield won the battle under the boards.

In the first quarter Bluefield got off to a torrid start, taking 12-2 lead aided by two treys from Wallace. Montcalm fought back with Eva Grose scoring three straight field goals to end the quarter, narrowing the gap to 15-11.

The Lady Beavers extended their lead to 36-22 at the half. Wallace popped in two more treys in the second quarter and Kathleen Bailey was 7-for-8 at the foul line in the period.

Grose had seven field goals by halftime as well.

A 10-2 Bluefield run early in the third quarter gave the visitors a 17-point lead, 46-29. Montcalm turned up the defensive pressure and responded with a 7-1 run to end the period and keep their hopes alive.

Retaking the rebounding edge early in the fourth quarter, Montcalm crafted a 16-6 run to close the gap to 58-53.

An April Jennings steal and a long trey from Sheena Johnson with 42 seconds on the clock made the score 58-56. There were 16 foul shots after that goal.

Wallace's pressure-packed attempt had to be done twice. Her initial shot went through the hoop, but Montcalm noted they had not been allowed to replace a player who fouled out. The officials voided Wallace's shot, and she tried again, successfully.

Grose finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Johnson had 19 points, including her team's only three 3-pointers. Kerri Tiller dished five assists.

Wallace and Bailey each pulled down 10 rebounds. Aiesha Dewitt contributed 16 points. Bailey went 9-for-10 at the foul line and notched 15 points.
