The 2005 edition of the Bluefield Orioles will converge at Bowen Field to begin local workouts, meet area Appalachian League fans, then open their season. The annual "Meet the Orioles" cookout has been scheduled for June 18, one day after the Birds of Summer come to town. "We anticipate that the team will go through a light workout that afternoon (June 18)," said Bluefield general manager George McGonagle, then we'll have a cookout early that evening." Additional information regarding the Meet the Orioles event will be released soon. Bluefield opens the '05 season with a new manager, Jesus Alvaro. The 46-year old Alvaro is beginning his 11th season with the Baltimore organization. He has managed the Orioles' Gulf Coast League team for five seasons, then working as a minor league instructor in 2004. Alvaro played pro baseball for 18 seasons, including three with Baltimore. His coaching staff this summer includes former St. Louis Cards' pitcher Larry Jaster (pitching coach), and veterans Len Johnston and Cedric Landrum as field coaches. Bluefield opens its season on June 21, entertaining Elizabethton in a three-game series before starting a six-game road trip at Danville on June 24. http://www.bdtonline.com/articles/2005/06/05/sports/02sunorioles.txt SO DO YOU ALL THINK WE WILL HAVE MORE FANS AT THE ORIOLES GAMES THIS SEASON?
