BLUEFIELD - The Bluefield Beavers and Graham G-Men are putting a new twist on an old rivalry.

After both teams had trouble filling out their 2005 schedules during the offseason, the Beavers and G-Men recently agreed to meet a second time on the gridiron during the upcoming football season.

The annual season-opening contest between the state line rivals - scheduled for Aug. 26 - will be joined for the first time in recent memory by a second game on September 30.

"Well, it's something that you don't know how it's going to turn out," Bluefield coach Fred Simon said. "But we're happy it's worked out this way. Both teams needed games, and financially it'll be a great help to us.

"And we both have a chance to win."

Graham coach Glynn Carlock Sr. said he is looking forward to the second date, but he doesn't want it to replace the atmosphere of the teams' first meeting of the year.

"We don't want to take the tradition off of or away from that first ballgame," Carlock said, "but for the last five years or so, trying to get a schedule has been impossible to get 10 games."

The G-Men will have 10 games on their '05 docket; the Beavers will take the field with nine dates.

Both games will be held at Mitchell Stadium. The season opener will be Graham's home date, while the Beavers will host the rematch.

"One thing about it is that we don't have to travel and we know it'll be a good crowd," Carlock said. "We'll make out two ways with that; of course, somebody will make out three ways (by winning)."

"You just don't know which way it's going to turn," said Simon, whose Beavers won last year's game 48-21.

"With both teams playing each other, anything can happen."

What do you all think will be the outcome?, or is it to early to tell?
