Upset of the Year...Almost - Haysi 15, Rye Cove 14

Anybody who had followed things up to this point would have figured Rye Cove was a lame duck heading for a beating at the hands of Haysi. After all, losing 50-16 to Appy didn't seem promising prior to playing Haysi, 20-0 winners over Clintwood (a team Appy only beat 20-12).

I think somebody forgot to tell Rye Cove they were suppose to get blown out...and apparently Haysi didn't remember it either.

Fumbles and a goal line stand had Rye Cove tied 0-0 with Haysi at halftime. Haysi, clearly the more dominant team, had a pass dropped inside the five that would have been a definite touchdown, not to mention a costly fumble early.

Haysi again fumbled to start the 3rd Q, and the Cove took advantage with a 35 yard drive capped by a QB sneak to go up 8-0 (the QB took it in for the 2 pt as well).

Haysi was reeling as they were dominating both sides of the ball, but losing on the board. They were driving good, and fumbled again with three RC defenders around the ball. However, they tried to pick it up and run with it, bobbled the ball, and somehow, Haysi recovered and went on to tie the game at 8.

Haysi had two drives in the last 2:41 of the game where they aired it out, but were intercepted once and had a loss of downs to send things into OT.

Haysi scored in one play, a sweep to Elijah Owens. They opted to kick the XP, a very smart coaching move in the end, to go up by 7.

The Cove struggled, but punched the ball into the end zone on there 4th down. They went for 2 and the victory, but a Haysi player dragged the Cove RB down in the backfield to secure they Tiger victory.

Haysi's defense is as advertised. Very quick to the ball, strong DLine, LBs move well, very stingy. There pass defense looks a little shaky, but Rye Cove didn't have the ability to threaten them at all (they may have called 4 passes all game, two of which were INT'd off of bad throws).

It'll be interesting next week @ Sandlick when Honaker comes to visit.
