Twin Valley Scrimages

Grundy has a lot to be optimistic about. For a team that is very young (plenty of So and Fr playing), they seem to have a lot of upside. Granted, I don't think one could fairly assess Grundy's skill level due to the competition (Pikeview really had no business being there; Twin Valley, while more talented than PV, still wasn't a suitable match-up either).

Grundy looks to be in fairly good shape offensively. Both QBs looked good running the offense, they have a good mix of talented running backs, and the Ashby kid will anchor a young WR corp. The O-line is not very big, but they seem to block pretty well together, following out their assignments. Of course, Grundy's offense seemed to be held to 5 or 6 plays with a bunch of kids revolving in and out to run them. However, the O-line seemed to have no kids coming in and out as much, so depth could be an issue there.

Defense, however, could be an issue for Grundy. Granted they didn't surrender a single point, but the defense gave up its fair share of yardage, particularly against Twin Valley. TV's running game worked well between the tackles, and if not for some missed blocks, could have seen some success on the outside. Neither team they faced had any semblence of a passing game (unless you count TV's Pee Wee Football-ish looking Halfback Pass they ran twice) so its hard to grade that area. One thing about the defense, though, is that they seem to like to hit and they all seem to tackle well.

Based on what I saw in two scrimmages, TV looked much the same as they did last year. They didn't appear to be running anything any different, they just replaced some kids.

The kid who started the year at QB graduated, his highly touted FR. backup from a year ago is not playing. Both QBs are untested.

Wyatt Justus returns at RB, but they do seem like they plan on spreading the wealth a little more to keep teams from keying on him.

Gone is the 300 TE, now replaced by a 6'7 200 lbs kid whose potential is there (great hands, good speed, gets where he needs to on the routes), but lacks some of the fundamentals (no enthusiasm for blocking; missing blocks on CBs who he MUST block if TV is to gain any yards) to be a major success.

Defensively, they play very cautious. The CBs look good, but are short and Wyatt holds the MLB spot down quite nicely. The rest of the team seem to just need some reps together.

At this point in time, I'd say they are dead even with the team from last year at this point. They potentially could be better (maybe the Hurley of '06???), but it could be another 2-8 year as well.
