bluefieldRocks 14 Report Share Posted May 12, 2007 Also some props to Chad Brady a former graham student. Defeated 2-time defending state champion dennis cole, as a sophomore folks! CHARLESTON  It’s almost a certainty. The Bluefield girls tennis team are on the cusp of school history. With a five-point edge over their nearest opponent, the Beavers should be able to return to Bluefield tonight with the Class A/AA tennis championship trophy along for the ride. The Class A/AA tourney will conclude today at the Kanawha City Community Center. Paige Belcher and Brittany Freund advanced to today’s singles finals, while all three Bluefield doubles teams did the same, giving the Beavers a cushion that should bring the school its first girls tennis championship, according to Bluefield coach Deb Sarver. Bluefield has 13 points heading into today’s finals, while Charleston Catholic and Petersburg have eight point apiece. Chad Brady and Nate Lawrence advanced to the finals in singles action for the boys team, while Brady and Warner combined to do the same in doubles. Bluefield’s boys are currently in second place with 10 points, and trail Charleston Catholic by two points. In girls action Friday, No. 2 seed Belcher defeated Kailyn Gibbons (Charleston Catholic) 6-0, 6-3, while No. 3 Freund stopped Megan Webb (6-2, 6-1). Both will play in singles matches that start this morning at 8:30 a.m. Laura Acken, Bluefield’s top seed, was defeated by Preeya Shah (Winfield) 6-3, 6-3. Acken and Freund won doubles matches over teams from Keyser and Catholic Catholic, while Belcher and Grace Sudduth were victorious over squads from Oak Glen and Keyser. The No. 3 doubles squad of Madison Hayes and Katie Hincher also advanced to the finals, defeating Oak Glen in the process. All three teams will be in action today starting at noon. Brady starred for the Beavers in boys action, defeating two-time defending champion Dennis Cole (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) and will play Shady Spring’s Joe DeFilippo in today’s finals. The Bluefield sophomore defeated DeFilippo to win the region title last week, stopping a three-year streak of titles for his opponent. Third-seeded Lawrence also advanced by defeating Justin Weaver (Grafton) 6-3, 6-0, but No. 2 seed Cory Warner was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Charleston Catholic’s Tyler Whipkey. The No.1 doubles squads of Brady and Warner did combine to defeat teams from Berkeley Springs and Charleston Catholic to advance to the championship round today at noon against a duo from Logan. Bluefield’s No. 2 doubles squad of Lawrence and Mark Pullins were defeated 7-5, 6-3 by a duo from Parkersburg Catholic. *In other tennis action involving local players, Princeton’s Alex Sinicrope was defeated in the Class AAA semifinals by Doug Hornak of Morgantown 6-0, 6-0.
