Muncy makes most of chances

TAZEWELL, Va. — Call it spread offense, but Tazewell’s Matt Muncy was playing some “7 on 7†of his own in the Bulldogs’ exciting 21-19 win over George Wythe Friday.

The 6-4, 205-pound senior wideout only touched the football seven times but what a difference that ultimately made against the Maroons, who trounced THS by more than 40 points last season.

No. 7 caught a pass from quarterback Cody Lockhart for 30 yards, had two runs for 20 total yards including a two-yard touchdown, recorded 65 yards on a pair of punt returns, and returned two kicks for 114 yards with one of those a dazzling 97-yard touchdown. He also had a 68-yard scoring catch was wiped out by penalty.

Muncy also defended a couple of passes and was in side-by-side when teammate Andrew Rhudy made a critical fourth-quarter block of a George Wythe field goal attempt.

For his efforts, Muncy earned the Pocahontas Coal Association/Bluefield Daily Telegraph Player of the Week award for the opening week of the 2008 season.

“Everybody on our team was pumped up,†grinned Muncy after the game. “This is the best it has been for a couple of seasons. It’s a real honor to win this award but the greatest feeling is to be 1-0 after our first game.â€

Bulldog coach Bobby Wyatt called the honor an individual achievement combined with a team effort.

“I’m proud of Matt for all his hard work, during the off season and in summer practice,†said Wyatt. “He has gone all out to make himself better and to help our team. He’s managed to pick up a step, too.

“On the kick return for a touchdown, for instance, a couple of George Wythe players had an angle on him but Matt somehow got up into another gear and kept going.â€

Muncy’s 97-yard score came on the series following a 58-yard fumble return for a touchdown by GW’s Drew Lester, and was crucial for the Bulldogs.

“The momentum had shifted their way,†admits Wyatt, “but when we got that big run back and score right back, it really helped us. That was important.â€

Muncy says this season is starting out better because of the available talent on the offensive patterns.

“When you have Colton Cook, Corey Beavers, and Brandon Pauley in the passing scheme, and Cody (Lockhart) throwing the ball behind our offensive line, I know I’m going to be open some. Those guys are making a difference,†he says.

Beavers, a 6-3 junior tight end, is equally happy to work with Muncy.

“Matt keeps our enthusiasm up,†says Beavers. “He works hard and helps the younger players improve. He is always doing something positive, especially with the underclassmen, to make us better players. He is a good man to have on our side.â€

Wyatt, now in his fifth season, has watched Muncy through high school. He is especially pleased with the effort, in part because his senior standout has already signed to play with Wake Forest.

“Some players might not go all out since they already have a scholarship, or maybe back off to avoid injury but Matt plays 100 percent all the time. A coach can’t ask for more than that,†observes Wyatt.

Muncy says, “I think I have, and our team has, 13 more games this season to keep improving. That is what this year is about for Tazewell, no matter what week it is.â€
