Hurley puts Region D pounding on Wildcats

By LLOYD COMBS for the Daily Telegraph

HURLEY, Va. — Hurley’s best teams have always played smart and shared the basketball.

The Rebels followed that tradition on Wednesday.

All five starters made major contributions as Hurley ran past Pound, 71-47, in Region D, Division 1 quarterfinal play.

Hurley (15-11) advances to the semifinals Friday at Lebanon, where it will face Appalachia at 8:00 p.m.

Every Rebel starter scored at least eight points, grabbed at least five rebounds and made the extra pass Wednesday. Hurley, which earned its first regional playoff win since 1993, took its first double digit lead late in the first quarter and never let its advantage slip below 15 points.

Both Dustin Waynick and Tyler Cooper posted double-doubles for the Rebels. Waynick poured in 23 points to go with 14 rebounds and four blocks, while Cooper dropped in 16 points and hauled in 11 boards.

Cooper also combined with his brother Austin for 14 assists for a team that attacked the basket with a vengeance and assisted on 18 of its 26 field goals.

“We came into this game wanting to play team ball,†Tyler Cooper said. “We worked this week on passing the ball to the post in practice, and it paid off.â€

Pound (6-20) could not overcome its first-half shooting woes, or the 6-foot-7 Waynick and Hurley senior post Larry Burks inside.

The Wildcats had just four field goals in the first half and fell behind 37-15 at halftime.

“We didn’t shoot very well, and we didn’t play very well defensively,†Pound coach Chris Wilson said. “(Hurley has) some good shooters and they have good size.

“Size and kids who can shoot. That’s the makings of a good basketball team.â€

The Wildcats shot a meager 16.7 percent (4-of-24) in the first half and didn’t shoot well enough to make up for it in the second half.

Pound finished the night 19-of-64 from the floor (29.2 percent) overall.

Josh Lowe scored 10 of his team-high 18 points in the third period, when both teams picked up the pace, Pound out of necessity, and Hurley by controlling the boards and beating the Pound press. Chase Beverley scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half for the Wildcats.

Hurley doubled up the Wildcats on the boards, claiming 44 rebounds to 22 for Pound.

“We played so unselfishly, I’m proud of the way the kids made the extra pass tonight,†Hurley coach Mark Cooper said. “And we hit the boards really well.â€

Larry Burks scored 10 points, all in the first half, Austin Cooper added nine points and Thomas Allen scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds for Hurley.
