Wyoming East victorious in home away from home

BECKLEY — As far as Bluefield coach Buster Large is concerned, Wyoming East may as well have been playing a home game.

The Warriors have certainly had a lot of success when they play at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

And No. 2 Wyoming East (10-2) played like a team on its home court — despite sitting on the visitor sideline — as they took apart No. 9 Bluefield 77-49 Monday in a first round of the Big Atlantic Classic Class AA division contest.

“Well, this is their place,†Large said. “They certainly played well here and we haven’t played well here in the last three games (dating back to the BAC two years ago.â€

It was the effort Wyoming coach Rory Chapman was hoping to see after the Warriors fell to Woodrow Wilson 76-53 Saturday.

“We did a good job crashing the boards in the first half and getting out in our running game,†Chapman said. “And in the second half, we ran our half-court stuff and we pounded the ball inside.â€

It was as much of what the Warriors didn’t do as what they did.

“We didn’t shoot a bucketload of threes,†Chapman said. “I told our guys we don’t need to fire up 25 threes. It’s not a high-percentage shot. Today we pounded it inside and didn’t take all those threes.â€

Indeed, Wyoming East took on 13 threes, making three.

Inside was much more effective for the Warriors, where they were 24-of-40.

Chase Morgan paced the Warriors with 18 points. A lot of that was done driving to the basket. Marcus Schofield added 14 points, all of it inside. And Luke Campbell added nine points, most of that on first quarter drives to the basket.

“I thought Luke was probably our unsung hero tonight,†Chapman said. “He got several steals that led to assists in the first half and when we are getting that type of play, we’re going to be hard to beat.â€

Campbell had three driving baskets in the first quarter and that led to a 21-12 Wyoming East lead.

It grew in the second quarter, as the Warriors continued the inside trend and Bluefield continually hurt itself by missing free throws.

“We didn’t come to play,†Large said. “I thought our preparation was good but we didn’t come to play. We missed a bunch of free throws. We just weren’t in it.â€

It didn’t help that Kyle Harris was not suited up for the Beavers.

“I’m sure that hurt them,†Chapman said. “He’s a good player.â€

The Warriors face the winner of today’s Poca-Oak Hill game in Saturday’s 2 p.m. title game and Bluefield will face the loser in the consolation matchup at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday.
