Tazewell High School product Zak Wasilewski recently committed to the University of South Carolina.

Wasilewski is considered by many to be one of the top pitchers in the USA in the 2012 class.

He picked the Gamecocks over offers from North Carolina, LSU, East Carolina, and Tennessee and many others. In recent weeks he had narrowed his list to South Carolina and North Carolina.

Like many of the state's top prospects, Wasilewski participates with the Hurricanes program when not playing for Tazewell. Canes Coach Jeff Petty said "Zak is a tremendous competitor and athlete. He is the type of kid that wants the ball in big situations and is one of the hardest working kids I have seen at his age in a long time. He is religious in the weight room on a daily basis. He's a great kid as well. I have no doubt in my mind he will bounce back from the Tommy John surgery and be better than he was before because of his tireless work ethic. We look forward to having Zak with us in 2011." Zak Wasilewski is the 14th 2012 graduate to commit to a Divison 1 school from the Canes organization!

Tazewell coach Lou Perry echoed Petty's comments, telling VirginiaPreps.com "Zak is a special player, either pitching or batting. This season he will be a hitting threat for us as he continues to recover from his surgery. I don't think there is a better prospect in the state, at least if there is I haven't seen him."
