AA Top Ten:? Week One

Each week, we'll highlight notable wins from VirginiaPreps.com's AA Top Ten, as well as surprises and upsets outside the top ten, all leading into the updated AA Top Ten.

How the Top Ten Fared Last Week

3.?????? Harrisonburg? |? Idle

2.?????? Amherst County ?|? Idle

1.?????? Broad Run? |? Won over Fauquier 21-0

Notes?

The two defending state champions both opened up with impressive wins.? Broad Run, under new coach Matt Griffis, shut out Fauquier 21-0.? Quarterback Connor Jessop was the offensive star, throwing three touchdown passes and leading the team with 57 rushing yards.? The bigger story, though, is that Broad Run's defense came out strong once again, shutting out a Fauquier team that featured one of the better passing games in AA last fall.

Northside also opened up their title defense in strong fashion with a 34-14 win over Jefferson Forest.? The Vikings had a balanced offensive attack with running back Tyler Fisher leading the team in rushing and receiving yards and new quarterback Adam Hardister throwing for two scores.?

Christiansburg rolled over single A Floyd County with four different players scoring on the ground.? James Monroe was the lone top ten team to lose, falling at home to AAA Mountain View.

Outside the Top Ten

Freshman Trace McSorley

There were a couple of barnburners in region II, where Dulles District teams headed west to take on Northwestern District opposition.? Sherando opened up a 28-10 lead on Park View with just over seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, but a furious final four minutes left the Warriors with a 35-32 win, thanks in part to 123 rushing yards from Joseph Ojo.?

Elsewhere, Briar Woods went on an 87-yard drive late in the fourth quarter, led by freshman quarterback Trace McSorley, including a fourth and 10 completion with just over 30 seconds left that set up the game-winning field goal that gave the Falcons a 10-8 win at Millbrook.

Two teams that showed much improvement from 2009 to the first game of 2010 were Rustburg and Waynesboro.? The Red Devils knocked off William Byrd 35-14, a playoff team from a season ago that returned several starters, in perhaps the most surprising score of the night.? Waynesboro did not get the victory, but a 15-10 loss to Western Albemarle was a much better result than the 49-0 shutout from the same game one year ago.

Five Other Winners Who Impressed

Brookville:? 55-13 over Martinsville

Eastern View:? 46-6 over Culpeper County

Liberty (Bedford):? 40-21 over Broadway

Magna Vista:? 41-7 over Heritage (Lynchburg)

Richlands:? 31-0 over Gate City

Notes

Chancellor drops four spots from the preseason AA Top Ten because of the potential for Micah Cunningham to miss several games due to injury.? Seven of the top ten on the road this weekend, which could mean changes in this list early in the season.

It's nice to see that Richlands is in their top 10 and to see someone from SWVA in there, but it's still just 1 game and poles this time of the year really doesn't mean much.

Still nice to see though.

Thanks for the post.
