  1. First of all congratulations to the Union Bears on another good season and playoff run. Nothing to be ashamed of so hold your heads up high! Plenty of teams sitting at home that would have loved to play late into November. Sounded like Appo just had too much speed but can that be contained. Yes and I'm all in on Richlands bringing the trophy back down this way. No one is talking about Goochland and when I saw they were back in the picture this year, I said they would be the team coming out of the east. After all they were state champs in 2012, so I imagine they're just as hungry. Anyway the best 4 are remaining and Richlands will represent in the state game especially if Stuarts Draft is still running the single wing.

  2. Someone please post a picture or two of the crowd on here tonight. Although I'm a Union fan, I will be following updates on this game tonight. BTW, is there a radio link? I won't be able to make it to Appomattox due to work but they have a live stream. I really want a title brought back to SWVA this year and I think any of these three teams have the potential. Good luck tonight and safe travels!!!

  3. I retired in 2007 from Moody AFB, which is located in Valdosta, and was a Wildcat supporter while there. That program is finally starting to gain ground again as they may have settled on a coach. I was there from 2000-07 and while there they went through about 3 coaches in that time frame. One of the best games I watched was the 2003 state championship they played vs. Camden County, who was coached at that time by Gate City native Jeff Herron. He's a legend in GA. I've lived in several states to include the big 3 (CA, FL and TX) which are considered recruiting hot beds, I'd have to say Texas is king! From the fans, to the players, to the facilities, they do it big in TX! But growing up in SW VA, I'd still take our football any day.

  4. I figured this forum would a buzz with all the great season some of the local teams have had this past year.  Course then again, I havent heard a word about any players from AHS signing anywhere.  Granted they only graduate 7 this year.

Yeah I thought the same when I started this thread. Its such a shame these kids don't get the opportunity others do on the opposite end of this state. Surprised that Gavin was the lone D1 signee in SWVA, considering he didn't have a great season stat wise. He had an excellent sophomore season but his size, speed and potential kept him on the radar. I figured Richlands would have had at least 1 or 2 go D1.

  5. True they didn't beat them earlier in the season or it would have been. Season is over, sorry I was just trying to have a nice discussion about it. But you really can't anymore everyone gets salty over everything. My apologies, congratulations to all teams on a great season!

No apologies needed because no offense taken. You're just one of the many true, loyal and devoted fans that supports your team! Southwest VA was well represented this year by players, coaches and fans!

  6. The beauty or problem is you never know about a bad game or matchup. If you have one, you hope it's in the regular season. Appomattox are deserving champions. My ignorance of Clarke County aside, they played well enough to reach the final. On any given day, Richlands, Union, or Glenvar could have beaten Appomattox as well or each other. Regardless, it was an exciting season.

    I concur!

  7. "Earlier in the year" key words there. Richlands would've most likely beat Union like a drum if they played today. Appo beat Richlands in overtime. Then killed Clarke who clobbered Union.

And your point would be? Appo beating Richlands in o.t. has no bearing on what possibly could have happened between UHS and RHS. Bottom line is we both lost! Not looking for a fight but we'll never know! It's all a matter of opinion and we all wish for a 'do-over'!

  8. Been saying it for weeks.

Ryan you're pretty smart, knowledgeable and well respected on this forum however, this is just faulty fallacy on your part. We'll never know. I haven't wanted to read this board ever since Union lost (been in mourning) but that's a big 'what if' at best. I felt strongly that you all were going to beat Appo and we were going to take care of business and give everyone the championship game we all expected. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way, so now we all have to wait until August! I've moved on and am looking forward to an exciting season of basketball, which expectations should be right up there with the football team. Good luck!

  9. Thing that stands out to me is the absence of Gavin..no way there are 4 wrs in the conference better than him.

These all conference teams are driven by stats instead of real impact. Unfortunately towards the latter part of the season, Gavin was under used in the offensive scheme of things. He was primarily a decoy because he drew double coverage. Hopefully he gets invited to a couple of all-star games.

  10. coal mines shut down and we all lost our jobs and are in the unemployment line pretty much

Go look in the parking lot at Union...somebody is working. I see BMW's, big ass Chevy 4x4, Challengers, Highlanders, etc...unemployment paying that good now? Lol!

  11. Let them make the mistake of jamming our WR's...please I hope they do! Don't need much time from the spread and Spears does a good job recognizing the coverage. Hope this will lead to the vertical shots we need to take more often.

  12. Okay we've went over the sportsmanship issue ad nausem already, let's discuss the game

I think Union wins even if Cousin does not get hurt, but I believe its a nailbiter. Graham was unable to stop the running offense for the most part all night long, the run and the pass was there all night. Surprised Travis did not take more deep shots, the Graham DBs were small and Gavin and Mitchell had huge size advantages. We hit one long pass to Gavin and Mitchell caught two TD passes but his best catch was the 3rd down catch that sealed the game.

Graham has nothing to be ashamed of in terms of play, they were a good squad. Somewhat a one trick pony, but that one trick is pretty damn impressive.

    Now, on to Glenvar!

Spears could easily have thrown for 3-4K yards this season if Travis would take shots but he doesn't. The matchups have been like this all season long with Gavin and Mitchell. Gavin has actually become a decoy in the offense with one or two thrown his way in the past few weeks. As far as passing , we've become a deep shot or bubble screen offense so what concerns me now is the predictability in which we throw out of our sets. Quick slants are always there with the way DB's are playing 7-10 yards off our WR.  If Glenvar doesn't allow much on the ground, it should be an airshow next week at Bullitt Park.

  13. Union will need to jump on them early. You do not want Gretna to hang around late in the game

Agreed and Union has history of starting slow. I love the fact we're playing an unfamiliar opponent in the 1st round!

  14. I have absolutely no knowledge on them whatsoever. How will they stack up against Union? Do they have any tall corners?

Just know that they are no spring chickens and will put up a fight. They have won 5 state championships with their last one coming in 2011. Union has to come out of the gate firing on all cylinders.

  15. And BTW, why would you want to play Richlands again? They may be the best team in the state, it took all Union had to beat them at home. Now Union was without one of its best playmakers in Noaks, but I would not count on Asbury throwing those INTs again. Id much rather have to play Glenvar/Giles/Appomattox/Buckingham than Richlands again.

Totally agree! If this had been a late season matchup, it wouldn't garner this much conversation. Until we get more aggressive with our play-calling, Union just may struggle with a first round opponent, let alone play with Richlands. We were expected to do that to Eastside, so I'll temper my enthusiasm. Richlands just happens to be the last game we played a solid 4 quarters.

  16. See my original Post below...meanwhile Unions game was over in the 1st quarter.

As a Union fan and having watched Richlands, I think the Blues wins this one easily. Good coaching, disciplined players and big game experience, will be the deciding factor in this game. I don't know much about Abingdon, but Richlands just doesn't get rattled when faced with adversity. To me this is more of whether or not the Falcons have arrived. Wish they would change the date because I'd liked to see this game. It's at Ernie, the Blues are hitting on all cylinders so I don't see Abingdon leaving with a victory. Jmo

  18. Where exactly is Central's field at? We're thinking about taking in this game.

Depends on what side you're coming from. If you're coming up Hawthorne, which is the intersection below Ingles and the cancer center, then you go up the hill, once past Hillcrest Lanes (bowling alley), take 1st right. You'll see the marquee sign for Central High School, turn right and go up the hill. If you come in like you're going to Walmart, you can either keep straight through the light past Applebees and ride the rode around, then take 1st left until you see marquee. Or you can turn left at the light past Applebees but stay in outer lane and ride it around and turn right at Advance America. You'll see Burkes and go straight through stop sign until you see marquee. Turn left to go up hill. Hope it's not too confusing.
