  1. The post you had been talking about was at 4:57pm on October 19, that would have been Tueday, which was, let's see, 2 DAYS AGO! You're a smart one, you really are. In fact your wisdom is only surpassed by your own stupidity.
  2. Someone told me those 2 are supposed to play Monday night at Mitchell Stadium. If anyone knows this for sure, I'd appreciate them letting me know. The starting time would be nice as well. The first game was interesting from what I heard, with JM's Ryan Wickline busting a 70 yard run to get a 20-16 win on the game's final play.
  3. Yes mam! By the way, I fail to see how I'M the one bringing it up since that was 2 days ago.

  5. I couldn't have said it better myself! We've got until Saturday morning until the James Monroe-Bluefield game becomes a relevant point of focus. I can't say i'm surprised to see the firestorm that some honest opinions caused, but I've heard alot worse. That wasn't smack talk, it just wasn't what some people wanted to hear. You'll also notice I mentioned Wayne and Weir in that post, you know, those 2 other top 4 teams, so I don't know where I was talking smack. Truthfully, coming off of last week's subpar performance against Narrows, I'm not all that optimistic about October 29, but I think it'll be within 20 points. What I think is going to happen is maybe a title game between the Mavericks and Beavers, but more likely is a semifinal game between the 2 at Mitchell stadium. Both teams just better remember 1 thing, James Monroe isn't the only team that can beat Bluefield, and Bluefield isn't the the only team that can beat James Monroe. The Mavs found that out the hard way against Wyoming East in 1999.
  6. Dont't let the score fool you, Narrows nearly pulled an upset. It was a 7-6 Maverick lead at the end of the 3rd quarter before JM went up 14-6, and Narrows fumbled their next 3 poosesions to leas to Maverick scores, 1 fumble was inside to JM 30 when the score was 21-6. I give the Maverick offense a C, and the defense a D+. Narrows rushed for a lot of yardage, and controlled the ball for a lonf time in the first 3 periods. James Monroe will have to play better at Point Pleasant this week, and a lot better against Bluefield next week.
  7. If I were from Bluefield, I wouldn't be real pleased. You can talk about coming back all you want, but Mount View has had it's own offensive problems all season, and IMO if Bluefield has 6 turnovers against a top team like James Monroe, Weir, or Wayne, and their opponent simply doesn't make the same mistakes, they could lose by 20+ points. It's pretty obvious, at least to me, that Coeburn is still forcing throws when he gets pressured, just like the scrimmage with Pulaski, and the loss to James Monroe 2 seasons ago. There has been a lot of hipe about Bluefield's air attack this season, I firmly believe that most of it's success is do to the fast recievers, and the threat of a ground attack. That being said, any team would benefit from have Rusty Coeburn on their roster, but mostly because of his defensive play, that's where he is underrated. However as a quarterback, he'll struggle if he tries to go to the next level at the QB position.
  8. This is extremely important if Shady wants to play more than 10 games. They can't afford another loss right now with 2 losses already, and then the road trip to Sissonville, and closing against a real good Liberty team. About the scouting, respecting Bluefield's a no-brainer for them right now, but they better be looking at other teams as well. IMO James Monroe and Weir are going to play major roles in how the playoffs turn out, and either one can upset Bluefield or Wayne if they have bad nights or key injuries.

  11. Good Question. Offensively this team is better because of it's speed, and lesser reliance on one back than the '02 squad was on Newberry. The single wing seems to have been the way to go for this team. Defensively, the 2002 team was better because of the huge linemen and linebackers. They never gave up more the 8 points in any game, this year it's 11 ppg. This year's team actually reminds me more of the teams in the late 90's with their speed, especially the 1999 team. I think this team will be better next season, we've got a lot of juniors starting now, but they can give anyone trouble now, and I honestlythink Bluefield and Wayne are the only 2 teams who may be better than us now. If we can beat those 2 in the playoffs, 2004 will be a very memorable year in Monroe County. To finally answer the original question, I think the 2002 team was a little better than this one.
  12. I've seen this coming for several weeks. Lilly may be a fine individual, and dedicated to his team, I'm just not sure if he's a AAA-level coach. I remember his simple statement of "we're going to run the ball and play tough defense" a few years ago. Hate to break it to you, but sometimes that isn't good enough at that level. I see where the heat's coming from, Woodrow hasn't had a good year since 2001, and has clearly gotten progessively worse during that time, and don't tell me it's all do to lack of talent. Lilly needs to look to next season right now, because if 2005 goes anything like this year in Beckley, I'd say someone else will be coaching in 2006. That's provided that patience lasts that long, because I'd say there are some pretty unhappy campers right now.
  13. This time last week, James Monroe was 0-3 all-time vs. Wyoming East. 8:30 last Friday night, trailing 21-7 at the half, there was little season not to believe it wasn't going to be 0-4. Listening to this game on the radio, I thought I was listening to the 1999 semi-final game all over again, and I wasn't very happy about it. After what I understand was a fiery half-time locker room courtesy of Coach Witt, the Mavericks played their best half of the season to beat Kevin Grogg's squad 49-21. If our guys come out and play like that for 4 quarters the rest of the season, they will be one tough nut to crack. In a surprise change of events, I very much plan on going to Liberty this Friday. Could be an interseting game, with 2 unbeaten teams. As long as we don't play like we did in the first half last week, we'll win this game. I think we have a slightly stronger schedule to this point, and JM is besting people by an average of 48-11, Libery by 36-20. James Monroe wins 37-14. One question for fellow Mavs fans, why didn't Heath Mullens play last week, and will he play at Libery?

  15. While I'm very confident in my guys in purple black & white to get the job done, it might not be the route we're all hoping for. Wyoming East is the best passing team we've faced, and we're still struggling against the throw defensively. Plus that, you're going into someone else's house. In the end, if the Mavericks don't have a bunch of turnovers, I don't think Wyoming East can stop our offense. 34-19 James Monroe.

  17. I kind of lied to Willie and Kevin Thursday night, this post is a little later than expected. I was pretty pleased with the second half last week, but when we get a team down like that, we've got to put'm away. James Monroe should've lead by 20-30 points at the half, but let East hang around. As for this week, unless we totally forget to show up, I wouldn't be surprised to see freshmen in the 2nd quarter playing for James Monroe, unfortunately for Summers, they'll be starting freshmen! The good thing for Summers is that they could have a very experienced and battle-hardened ball club in a couple of years. 52-6 James Monroe.

  20. The Mavericks will likely be at top performance Friday after a very sub-par performence in last week's win at Oak Hill. The Spartans are an offensively struggeling team, and MUCH slower than the Mavs on both sides of the ball. East may keep it close for a while if Robertson hasn't fully recovered, but if he has, 48-12 James Monroe. Also, I couldn't help but notice on WOAY that Andy Grogg acts alot like his brother Kevin. If this game goes like I think it will, I'd say he's got about a 50%+ chance of being ejected from the game.
  21. I hate to miss this one. Given that Oak Hill has won 2 squeekers against mediocre teams, I like our chances. We've just got to watch playing at a place that has upset Poca and Bluefield the last 2 years. I think Witt will have them ready, and a better executed offense will help the Mavs win 26-14
  22. That would be idiotic of Simon right now. Bluefield has yet to surrender points in the 1st half, so there defense looks alright as it is. Even more importantly, Bluefield's offense becomes very run-dependent if Coeburn get hurt, which is more likely to happen in that position.
  23. I've got some doubts about a couple of AA teams. First, Mount View hasn't showed me anything special. Bluefield, Shady, Webster, and Oak Hill all have a shot at them. I wouldn't count out county rival Iager either Liberty ® also makes me wonder as well, they gave up a lot of rushing yards to a very young Summers Co. team last week. James Monroe, Shady, and Sherman will be tough games for them. They haven't performed well against Wyoming East in the past as well.
  24. James Monroe 26, Oak Hill 14 *at Oak Hill, dangerous game for the Mavs Bluefield 22, Beckley 7 -Offensive problems coninue for Beckley Giles 14, Christiansburg 11 (OT) Narrows 13, Craig Co. 12 Shady Spring 34, Summers Co. 7 Man 18, Westside 16 William Fleming 21, Pulaski Co. 14 Bath Co. 33, Greenbrier East 8 Independence 21, Greenbrier West 20 Liberty ® 45, Pikeview 12 Marion 23, Graham 15
  25. 2 games really surprised me last Friday. One was the one at James Monroe, and the other was how bad Beckley got whipped. I hear weather could be a factor, but unless Bluefield has some turnovers, I think Bluefield wins by 10-15 points. Beckley still has a lot of work to do, but is a goog enough team to pull of the upset if Bluefield comes out flat.
