  1. Boys All-State announced Martinsville's senior point guard Emanuel Reid was named to the Associated Press' Group AA All-State second team on Tuesday. Wednesday, April 4, 2007 By FROM STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS - RICHMOND  Forced to watch the last month and a half of his high school basketball career from the bench, the efforts of Martinsville’s Emanuel Reid didn’t go unnoticed this season. The Bulldogs point guard was named to the Associated Press’ Group AA All-State second team on Tuesday, after suffering a season-ending knee injury in late January. A transfer from Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tenn., Reid was shooting 56 percent from 3-point range and 54 percent from the field before getting injured in his second season in a Martinsville uniform. “It’s quite an honor to not be able to play the whole season and still be honored as one of the top players in Virginia,†Reid said. “Coming to Martinsville helped me grow as a person as well as a player. Coach (Troy) Wells helped me tremendously as a player, and so did my dad.†Known for his ability to deliver in the clutch and provide on- and off-the-court leadership, Reid became an extension of his veteran coach. “Emanuel was the most consistent player we had all year long,†Wells said. “The invaluable experience he gained his junior year really paid off. Before he went down, he really thrived when it became clutch time. “He did whatever was necessary to keep us in the ballgame. He hit clutch free throws, and he would knock down 3s during the course of the game.†Martinsville’s season came to a close with an 89-65 loss to Hidden Valley in the state quarterfinals, moving the Bulldogs’ record to 19-10. While dreams of repeating as state champions fell short, Reid was able to find a positive while reflecting on his career, despite his unfortunate injury. “The city of Martinsville took me in, even as an outsider,†Reid said. “Last year I was able to win a state championship, and even this year with an injury, I still see something positive with our state championship from last year.†The All-Group AA first team is comprised of Bradley Starks of Orange County, who was also named Group AA player of the year, Ronald Thornhill of state runnerup Brunswick, Marcus Mayo of Rockbridge County, Ben Boggs of state semifinalist Hidden Valley and Chad Moore of Handley. Boggs is a sophomore, the rest seniors. William Fleming coach Mickey Hardy was named coach of the year, after leading the Colonels to their first state title in 12 years. Thornhill, 5-8, scored 22 points each in the state semifinals and championship, which the Bulldogs (26-4) lost 66-57. He averaged 19.2 points and 7.8 rebounds overall. Mayo, 6-0, averaged 22.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.5 steals. He topped 30 points four times, and had 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a game against Robert E. Lee-Staunton. Boggs, 6-3, averaged 16.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists for the Titans. He had 27 points in win over William Fleming in the Region III final, and 11 in the state semifinals loss to Brunswick. Moore, 6-4, averaged 19.1 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 steals for 22-4 Handley. Joining Reid on the second team are sophomore Jamelle Hagins of state champ William Fleming and seniors Alvin Wright of Heritage, Keon Scott of Robert E. Lee and Jimmy Ashby of Grundy.
  2. Three players scored as the Magna Vista boys soccer team earned a 3-2 win against William Fleming on Monday. Mario Hernandez had an unassisted goal for the Warriors. David Szynal scored on an Adam Pace assist, and Szynal fed Zach Clifton for the final score. Zach Smith had 12 saves in goal for the Warriors (2-2, 0-1 PD). Martinsville 4 Halifax County 0 Garrett Vaughan scored two goals to lead Martinsville past Halifax County. The Bulldogs led 1-0 at half time, but turned on the offense late. Joshua Torrez and Justin Bell each scored for the Bulldogs. Justin Wooldridge had two assists, and Will Reynolds stopped four shots on goal. Martinsville (4-1, 1-0 PD) plays again Thursday at Franklin County.
  3. i agree....mhs has a ton of experience. they have beaten two aaa teams (franklin co. and halifax co.) and their only loss so far is 1-0 on the road at AAA gw-danville.
  4. Tuesday, March 20, 2007 By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS - Martinsville’s boys soccer team earned its second win of the season with a 3-0 shutout against Halifax County on Monday. Josh Torrez got things started when he found Garrett Vaughan in the sixth minute for the game’s first goal. Quamaine Giles added to the lead with an unassisted goal in the 45th minute, and Andrew Dionne capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 55th minute for the Bulldogs (2-0). Will Reynolds stopped three shots on goal, including one penalty kick. Martinsville travels to G.W. Danville on Thursday.
  5. [ QUOTE ] its about fuller and i know the appeal is just getting started [/ QUOTE ] i've heard a little about it, but definitely don't know enough to give what could be misinformation here. it hope it turns out well...from what i've seen of him at basketball games this year, he seems like a genuinely nice kid. by the way...who do think you'll be snapping the ball to next year? who are the top candidates? in my eyes, that's the one position you guys have a hole to fill going into next season.
  6. bulldog62...is the appeal in reference to fuller? if so, what's the status of it? if not...who is the player? you can give the number and i can figure the rest out if you don't wanna give the name.
  7. well actually it began several years back in basketball, but now it's likely to get into full swing. i'm not sure of carlisle's exact enrollment, but i'd put the total number of boys in grades 9-12 at MAYBE 60-70 total. Carlisle takes to gridiron in fall 2007 Sunday, March 4, 2007 By FROM BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS - For Carlisle fans, more than 20 years of waiting is finally over. The school announced plans on Thursday to resurrect the football program this fall. The Chiefs will begin play this season and, for at least the inaugural campaign, will play their games on the school’s soccer field. Carlisle has named girls basketball coach Tony Jones as the man to help revitalize a program that was put to rest in the 1980s, mainly because of a low high school enrollment. Jones has 20 years of football coaching experience in Martinsville, Henry and Pittsylvania counties, where he has found success in recreational leagues. He has also guided the Lady Chiefs to three basketball state championships in the last five years. Mancino Craighead, Carlisle’s assistant athletic director, JV boys basketball coach and head of the phyiscal education department, will serve as Jones’ assistant coach. Craighead has experience as a JV football coach at Fieldale-Collinsville High School and as an assistant with the varsity football team at Bassett High School. “When it comes to a football program, it is more than just a football team,†Carlisle’s Headmaster Simon Owen-Williams said. “It is the cheerleaders, band and school spirit. It is a great source of pride for alumni and students, and it is a rallying point for the school.†Carlisle will hold its games on Friday nights and will initially play schools in its own Division II, against opponents with similar enrollment as opposed to playing schools in the Virginia Indepent Conference, in which Carlisle’s boys teams currently compete. Carlisle athletics director David Gaylor noted the VIC does not require its member schools to play football at all or within the conference.
  8. i'm like a broken record...martinsville started slow, gathered themselves and took a lead, but then couldn't hold on to it. yet another game where all kinds of calls and especially fouls were either missed or just not made...and this isn't an excuse, it was poorly called both ways. 4 total fouls in the first half, then they changed it up and called quite a few in the 2nd...it's beginning to be as bad as watching an nba game... time to suck it up and travel to roanoke to face a very solid hidden valley squad. good luck to mv as well as they face off against william fleming. hopefully both teams will represent the piedmont and region iv well.
  9. [ QUOTE ] anyone kno the final on martinsvllie-va high game? [/ QUOTE ] i'm tired...what a long ride back! 56-51 martinsville was the final i believe. martinsville didn't have their best game, but this time of the year it's all about winning and advancing. v-high was whistled for their first foul of the 2nd half with 2:30some left in the fourth quarter. about 13 1/2 minutes without a foul...
  10. yea i just talked with a member of the mhs coaching staff...seems that they only thought it may be moved to abingdon. but i think it's all speculation right now...b/c bassett and magna vista will probably petition to have their game moved closer to home. i guess we'll all see soon enough. and i've been to graham middle....it's similar to the doghouse except for i don't remember there being any endzone seating, but the sideline seats seem to hold more people.
  11. [ QUOTE ] where you at Fraizer11??? [/ QUOTE ] he said he'd be in the stands laughing tonight. so i'd think he's still got 30 mins to an hour before he gets to the house. just a guess
  12. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] what about carroll county how did they do? [/ QUOTE ] i was wondering the same. we were told at martinsville tonight that if all 3 swd teams lost, then the semis would not be at graham...they'd be moved to abingdon. [/ QUOTE ] Are you sure? I was looking forward to watching some real HS bball. [/ QUOTE ] i heard mhs's athletic director and coaches mentioning it after the game. although it certainly would be nice to see a piedmont matchup using non-pd refs...i bet everyone would foul out!! hahaha
  13. at times where everyone was sitting and not wandering around...we may have pushed about 2/3s full. so if i had to guess...700 people maybe.
  14. [ QUOTE ] what about carroll county how did they do? [/ QUOTE ] i was wondering the same. we were told at martinsville tonight that if all 3 swd teams lost, then the semis would not be at graham...they'd be moved to abingdon.
  15. [ QUOTE ] its not a surprise to anyone really dude lol [/ QUOTE ] relax buddy...just giving dmspartan a hard time b/c he picked grundy over bassett.
  16. a piedmont sweep! and just because i know ya... can i say "i told ya so!" about bassett? :-)
  17. oh yea...i saw one of the weirdest plays i've ever seen in a high school bball game... richlands had the ball in their halfcourt set...martinsville was pressuring them man to man. richlands through the ball out of bounds and a spectator swatted it back in play (the front row of bleachers at the doghouse are only a few feet out of play). a richlands player gathered it in and headed straight to the hole for the layup. none of the 3 officials whistled the ball out of bounds. it kind of was a momentum swinger for richlands...they got that layup, then i believe hit back to back 3s on their next 2 possessions.
  18. dogs won 71-55. slow start to the game, but martinsville hit another gear and pushed the score to 24-10 at the end of the quarter. they lead by 19 at the half i think. the lead swelled to about 26 or so at one time, but several 3s by richlands kept the game from getting completely ugly. (that one kid, number 4 i think, hit probably 6 3s!) and as i said it would be, the doghouse was not a whole lot over half full.
  19. i say bassett in a close one...bassett needs to make more of those point blank shots they tend to miss and also keep mcgill and womack out of foul trouble and they should be fine. i don't think grundy has anyone that can stop mcgill.
  20. [/ QUOTE ]i did hear they played really good man to man defense [/ QUOTE ] and the game you're basing that statement on...the pd final...was played w/out a kid that signed a LOI to play football at vmi...arguably the best all around athlete in the area. he'll be in the starting lineup tomorrow night.
  21. grundy got #1 b/c they won the swd...and the swd is the region iv host this year.
  22. [ QUOTE ] Close for a half,Dogs make them chase the 2nd half(if they can get a 6-8 point lead). I'll say 12-15 point Dog win. But I'll also say this, none of the Piedmont teams are as strong this year as some of the past teams have been,so with that being said any of them are subject to being beat if all they think they have to do is show up to win!! [/ QUOTE ] i'm inclined to agree with that one...somewhere in the 10-15 point range. rhs will play zone and the game may stay fairly close early. although what those teams typically don't realize is that it's not the zone that'll keep the score close...it's the relentless defensive pressure the bulldogs apply that will make the score more lobsided.
  23. way to bring this thread back on topic...i think the frazier guy asked people to guess the final score...
  24. nope...don't think he's ordained or anything...lol...but he does preach. pentacostal preacher i think. how interesting would that be to see?!?
  25. i hope not...he's actually a preacher!!
