  7. [/ QUOTE ]it will fill up and im goin to laugh when richlands comes in there ready to play and gives martinsville a run for there money [/ QUOTE ] i'm not so sure...i know two years ago the game against marion only was about half full (and the doghouse doesn't seat a lot of folks). simply put, the local fans sometimes think the game doesn't mean anything unless it's against a big-time team they know something about...or of course another henry county area team. not belittling richlands, just stating the obvious.
  8. [ QUOTE ] You didn't get it. The doghouse is a totally different atmosphere and Richlands will get blown out!! [/ QUOTE ] i'll not venture a guess at the score, or say they'll get blown out....but it's likely that the kids will be in for a total shock in the doghouse. especially if the locals decide that the game is worth their 5 or 6 bucks and the place fills up.
  9. [/ QUOTE ]the game against magna vista they shot from the perimeter maybe 3 times [/ QUOTE ] they also had tracy hairston in street clothes during the magna vista game. he's very capable of hitting the 3... he will be in uniform tomorrow night.
  10. [ QUOTE ] martinsville doesnt have a perimeter game, and i think richlands is athletic enough to beat them [/ QUOTE ] martinsville lost it's top scorer and eventual piedmont player of the year in emanuel reid about 6 or 7 games ago. while he certainly was the dogs' (and maybe the state's) most lethal threat from the perimeter, to say that "martinsville doesn't have a perimeter game" is just not really true. and anyone who doesn't think that the dogs will not be prepared for yet another southwest va team to throw a zone at them...you're kidding yourself. look for the dogs to use speed and quickness to jump out to a lead...then hold the ball until richlands has to come out of the zone. eerily similar to the game against abingdon last year...
  11. Decorated Bulldog duo fuels strong wrestling tradition Monday, February 19, 2007 By ANDREW STEVENS - Bulletin Sports Writer They’re not members of the Martinsville High School basketball team. They’ve never won a state championship and there are plenty of people in the area who have never heard of either one of them. Yet wrestlers Rickey Flood and Dorian Carter will graduate this spring as two of the most, if not the most, decorated athletes in the history of a school plenty rich in sports tradition. Carter (145 pounds) and Flood (160) first met as children when Flood lived next to Carter’s grandfather and shortly thereafter their wrestling careers began in elementary school. Their friendship continues today as competitors in practice, and off the mat they are the best of friends who are at times inseparable. “We play cards, we go bowling, we go to basketball games and we eat, we love to eat,†Carter, the 2006-07 Piedmont District Wrestler of the Year, said with a chuckle. “When I lose Rickey’s really the only person I can talk to because he’s really the only person on the team that’s on my level. He can tell me what I did wrong and I can tell him what he does wrong.†Like other teenagers, Carter and Flood enjoy their fun, but while many of their peers spend their free time and summers working or hanging out with friends, these two grapplers devote enormous amounts of time to wrestling. Despite fairly successful football careers, Carter and Flood both gave up the gridiron and now wrestle 12 months out of the year, attending tournaments and camps all across the state and as far away as Fargo, N.D. With a world full of distractions begging for their attention, the three-time team captains spend close to 50 hours a week either training or wrestling, and figure they’ve each wrestled somewhere between 300-400 high school matches, with more than a 100 wins apiece. “Wrestling is their thing and when I see Rickey and Dorian walking around tournaments they’re in their element, that’s their home,†Martinsville Head Coach Chad Ratliff said. “It’s a sport that you have to love because it’s hard. “You’re not just competing against an opponent, you’re competing against fast food, you’re competing against weight and you’re competing against giving up your weekends. It takes hard-nosed kids.†Dedication and hard work don’t stop when Carter and Flood walk off the wrestling mat they carry over to the classroom as well. Carter currently sports a 3.8 GPA and is mulling over U.Va. and Virginia Tech, and Flood was recently accepted to St. Andrew’s College in North Carolina. When asked how often Ratliff reminds the two to stay on top of their school work, Flood didn’t hesistate in responding, “24/7.†As close as Carter and Flood are off the mat they do share a competitive moment that neither of them will quickly forget. What the two believed to be nothing short of a friendly tussle their junior season at a tournament in Brookville turned into a perpetual bragging point for Carter, who won by one point despite giving up a good 15 pounds to his buddy. “I know I can say I beat Rickey in a real match,†Carter said. “I always bring back that match because I beat him, there’s just that one match.†The list of accomplishments Carter and Flood have compiled in their time at Martinsville more than speaks for itself. Carter’s a four-time district champion and Flood’s a three-time winner, they’re both two-time regional champions, multiple-time state qualifiers and are both currently ranked in the top-three in the state in Group AA in their respective weight classes. However, there’s one ultimate prize that’s eluded them both. But, in the eyes of the coach who has seen them work so hard to come so far, there’s much more worth achieving in life than a state championship. “I used to joke that those kids in their freshman class that it was like trying to herd rabbits during practice and competition,†Ratliff said. “It’s all been great but the things I hope they’ve learned in the last four years they’ll carry with them for a lifetime. A state championship is a fantastic memory but it won’t do what a college education will do.†At a school where state championships have become somewhat of a measuring stick, Flood feels his career would be incomplete with anything short of a ring. “I think about it every day,†Flood said. “It would mean a whole lot and it would boost my confidence going into college. That’s the only thing I haven’t accomplished. I need that state championship for my career to be complete.†Carter echoed his lifelong friend with a smile on his face and a gleam in his eye, “I want my picture right there on the wall beside the basketball team,†he said.
  12. your $.02 may be very valuable in this instance, and i tend to agree with you. i never was a big fan of comparing apples to oranges either...but like i said, i was just searching for games in between districts and/or some like opponents. whether they are relative is for you to decide i guess...i was just pointing them out.
  13. no trailers allowed now that you live within the city limits!! it's the law!! :-) oh, and a newlywed such as yourself should not be looking at porn, period!! :-) ...but i digress monkman and the preacher will both be there on the baseline in their usual form i'm sure. as for me, i'll probably be somewhere a few rows up behind the dogs' bench...and if you're there stop on by. as for the two local games...the mhs/richlands game potentially should be the closer of the two. i just don't think lee has the ability to match the athleticism and physicality whereas richlands tends to have better athletes. i guess we shall see though. and as for mhs getting killed in the doghouse...i'll take that bet!!
  14. i was looking for a few regular season matchups between the districts and/or some games against like opponents...here's a few i found. patrick co. (who lost to bassett 1st round of pd tourney) beat carroll county bassett beat graham very badly at graham...think it was by 30-some virginia high lost to tennessee twice...martinsville beat them in bristol

  17. not exactly what you asked for, but here is the article from the bulletin... Bulldogs win sixth straight wrestling title Sunday, February 18, 2007 By ANDREW STEVENS - Bulletin Sports Writer Martinsville High School may want to consider buying another trophy case. The Bulldogs captured their sixth consecutive Piedmont District wrestling tournament championship on Saturday afternoon at the Dawg House. Earlier this season, Martinsville won its fifth straight regular-season district title. Trailing Magna Vista heading into the last round, Martinsville got wins from six of its nine wrestlers in the finals and edged the Warriors 226-207. “There were a lot of heart rates high going into the last 14 matches, but we had a lot of guys with some finals experience,†Bulldogs Head Coach Chad Ratliff said. “I’ve been saying the last few years the Piedmont is just getting better and better, and it showed.†Tunstall finished third with 146 points, Patrick County placed fourth with 145 and Bassett finished fifth with 74.5 points. Earning wins for Martinsville in the finals and capturing individual district titles for their respective weight classes were Devin Stockton (119 pounds), Taylor Johnson (125), David Hamrick (130), Andrew Dionne (140), Dorian Carter (145) and Antwon Hairston (152). Carter, who captured his fourth individual district championship also (to his surprise) took home the district Wrestler of the Year award. “It was definitely a surprise. I didn’t think I was going to get it,†Carter said. “It was one of my goals. I wanted to get it, and me and Rickey (Flood) knew it was going to be either me or him. It just came out my way. It was just a surprise.†Winning individual district titles for Magna Vista were Tony Gravely (103), Timmy Santoemma (112), Charles Curtis (171) and Martin Salgado (215). “We almost met our expectations,†Warriors Head Coach John Truini said. “We were 19 points out of first place, but overall the kids wrestled with a lot of heart today and a lot of pride.†Also picking up individual titles were Bassett’s Andrew Miller (Hwt), Patrick County’s Kenneth Kendrick (135) and Dustin Echols (160) and Seth Flora (189) of Tunstall. Ratliff was awarded for his efforts this season by receiving his sixth career PD Coach of the Year award. “This award means a lot, especially since it’s voted on by my colleagues. That makes it feel special,†Ratliff said. Martinsville will host the Region IV tournament Friday and Saturday with action beginning Friday at 4 p.m. While another PD title is certainly worth celebrating, Ratliff isn’t going to let his team enjoy this one for too long. The ’Dogs, like many of their district counterparts, have bigger goals in mind. “As soon as we’re back in the practice room on Monday, it’s a new goal and a new week and we can’t rest on our laurels  that’s for sure,†Ratliff said. “When Grundy comes to town, we’ve got to be ready for them.â€Â
  18. they announced the results at the basketball game tonight. martinsville finished first. magna vista was second, tunstall 3rd, patrick co. 4th, and then bassett at 5th.
  19. bassett hammered tunstall by 20 or more. i saw grundy's coach there...tough opening round matchup for the wave against a very quick and athletic bassett squad.
  20. another extremely physical matchup between the dogs and warriors. mville trailed most of the way and luckily was able to force overtime. the dogs grabbed a 5 or 6 point lead in the overtime frame, but couldn't hold a lead again. warriors win 61-57. some folks from richlands sat behind us and couldn't believe the stuff that went uncalled throughout the game.
  21. from the mville bulletin... Friday, February 16, 2007 By ADAM REGAN - Bulletin Sports Writer The committee responsible for selecting Martinsville’s next football coach was looking for the total package. After a two-month search, it finally got its man. Chatham Head Coach Matt Foutz will succeed Taylor Edwards as the head of the Martinsville football program, Principal Dr. Tom Fitzgibbons announced Thursday afternoon. “We are confident that Couch Foutz will carry on the Martinsville football tradition,†Fitzgibbons said. “They may not always win the district or make the playoffs, but the Bulldogs are always going to be a factor. “This is the perfect time to usher in a new coach, and he is a perfect fit.†The Rocky Mount native was one of seven candidates interviewed for the opening. A commitee made of coaches, administrators and parents chose Foutz based on his 17 years of coaching experience (eight as a head coach), college contacts and teaching resume. “We wanted the best coach for our kids,†Athletic Director Bill Scheib said. “He hit me as a brilliant, young football mind and he is highly regarded by a lot of college coaches.†Foutz said he compiled a 39-53 record over the past eight years as Chatham’s coach. He garnered the 2005 Danville Register and Bee Coach of the Year Award after leading the Cavaliers to a 10-2 season and a trip to the Group A Regional final. Assistant coaching stints at Hargrave Military Academy (1992-98) and Amherst County High School (1990-92) also impressed the committee. “I am extremely honored to take over such a great job,†Foutz said. “I’m excited about following in the footsteps of some great coaches.†Following Edwards, who tallied 203 wins and a state championship, may be a tough act to follow. Edwards not only stayed for the long haul (25 years), but raised the expectations of the community. “One of the reasons I took this job is because it wasn’t a rebuilding effort,†Foutz said. “The athletes are in place and are ready to work. I think we can live up to expections.†Scheib informed Foutz during the interview process that Martinsville fans expect to win immediately. Foutz said he is up to that task. “I believe that it doesn’t matter what happened last season,†he said. “Realistically, I’m looking at competing for a state championship every year.†Foutz plans to move his wife Hila, and children Holland, 5, and Eli, 2, into the community. He hopes to have an effect on Martinsville’s youth as a leader and an educator. The physical education teacher earned 2006 Chatham High Teacher of the Year honors and the Dogwood Track Coach of the Year award. “My first priority is developing athletes,†Foutz said. “As for all the students, I’m looking to teach life skills and build confidence through fitness. I want these kids to learn they can accomplish anything.â€Â
  22. [ QUOTE ] So is the 9 team regional tourney just in Region IV, or is it in all of AA? [/ QUOTE ] it's not 9 teams...it's 8. 3 from swd, 3 from piedmont and 2 from highlands. and the lucky 2 teams may be the 2 that are from the highlands and swd that don't play a pd team in the opening round. especially if bassett (and not tunstall) gets the 3rd seed out of the piedmont, i don't see any pd teams losing in the regionals to any non-pd teams...no smack intended, just my opinion.
  23. martinsville let a 13 point 4th quarter lead over bassett evaporate, they won by 3 though...51-48. in the other matchup...mvhs and tunstall were going toe to toe in the first half. i think ths actually lead by a point or two at the half...i didn't see the 2nd half though...maybe someone can report the score??? EDIT: someone on vapreps is reporting that the finals will be mhs/mvhs. he didn't provide any score for tonight's game versus tunstall though.
  24. everything went cleanly... the ths/drhs game was up and down the floor the whole way. i don't think either team led by more than 5 or so the entire ballgame. bassett jumped out quickly against pc. the cougars responded and closed the gap, but basically was no closer than about 6-8 the rest of the way. coach gunter did get t'd up i presume for arguing a call...and there were a few times i tended to agree with him...
  25. tunstall edged dan river by 3...bassett beat patrick co. by 9.
