  1. First and foremost, Congratulations to the Golden Wave and all the coaches, players, and fans. A 4-0 start is really good. I have seen a variety of Offense. Everyone is an option. I have seen some defense fighting hard. I saw #30 run down the Haysi runner in the 4th and then the D shut 'em down. I've seen a lot of emotion out of the coaches. They are trying as hard as they know how to. Now, Grundy has 2 weeks to prepare for the SWD schedule. From what I have seen, I think Grundy is a playoff team this year. If you want the easy win you thought you were getting ..... think again. Grundy is a real team. Everyone is playing there part and playing great team ball. I'm not saying they're the best team ever, but they can beat anyone on the schedule!

  2. and I'm still impressed with the changes I saw Friday night. First, I like that we are playing some "cup cakes" early to build morale and to get some unity on the field. Second, The Offensive Play Calling has gone to the Spread running game. I think we need to work Cody Justus into the mix a little more(all SWD Reciever). I do not know if he is our "Wild Wave" back or not, but he is a heck of an athlete that could play any position in any sport at the high school. Third, Greg Rowe...... You really surprised me. I always said the thing coach rowe did best was evaluate talent and form an offense with the talent he had in front of him. I think that this is what you have done. Kudos

  3. WOW! I am as critical as anyone, but the WAVE is playing ball. Lance, you will not believe this, Grundy ran the ball 90% of the plays. It appears Rowe has taken over the offensive play calling. Plymal has moved to the top of the press box. It reminded me of the 80's and early 90's when we rarely passed. 49-12 over Matewan impresses me. We looked good. Bergelow ran wild. Kelly ran well and so did McCowan. Go Wave!

  4. I was told the same thing. This past fall Miller was saying that he would wrestle during his "football redshirt" year and then see if he would fit into the football teams plans. More recently, after the Beast, Miller was saying he was going to concentrate on f-ball.

  5. It would take a waver from the VHSL if Grundy wants to compete in the post season and given the track record of the VHSL I DO NOT see it happening

I think that Grundy would get the "hardship" waiver. If not the VHSL may get a visit from one of the local attorneys. Grundy is the smallest AA team with about 430 students. Ken Tilley was notified last year about the situation when the school board did not vote on the matter they just "heard arguements" from all concerned. This is an Action by the Buchanan County School Board. I think that it will be looked at in this light, not like a team who is middle of the pack enrollment wanting to play down to get an advantage.

  6. Saw in the paper that 2010 IS what they're talklng about. That is a bit of a problem, since it's in the middle of a 2-year cycle. The VHSL doesn't move teams during a cycle - kinda defeats the whole purpose of having them to start with. Now, we might possibly ask for a special waiver or hardship or something like that, but I don't see it being granted. Nothing special happened around here lately that puts us at a disadvantage (like a plant closing), and we HAD a chance to drop THIS YEAR, but passed on it, so I don't see anyone feeling sorry for us.

On the other hand, I think it's POSSIBLE we could drop. What with Districts not meaning much anymore because of Div. playoffs, the "big 3" (fb, b/g b'ball) don't actually need to have a full district schedule to make the post-season. Other sports would prob. have an easier time fixing their schedules. I just think this is a can of worms the state won't want to open.

As for the possible District ... we already know the LPD isn't receptive to us, and we belong in the BDD anyway. The wrestling team will compete in the LPD, like Garden did, until we have more BDD wrestling teams - which means TFN. Reno will prob. still be available; I don't know if they have any criteria, but our enrollment isn't going to change much. It is possible to lose a tourney or 2 (Brookville might not want Single A teams there), and I wonder about the Va. Duals, but I don't think the schedule will change much. (Speaking of, I'd like to see more NC schools - Mooresville had a great team this year).

And yes, we'll have a better shot at winning A then AA... C'burg isn't slacking off, Poquoson has a new coach, and AAA runner-up Fauquier will be AA in a few months.

    Elliot,

The schedule will only change with the district teams. Nobody in wrestling has the "I won't wrestle a single A team" mentality. Most quality tournament want tough individuals and teams. As long as you can say I have some state place winners the good tournaments want you to come. They use the number of state champs and placers to justify the tournament strength. As long as Grundy can have some kids placeing in the state they will be going to the top tournaments in the country.

I would like to offer a side Analysis here. I think this really belongs in the wrestling forum, but... here is what I forsee. Grundy in Single A wrestling legitimizes the tournament. You already have some good quality individuals and a couple of pretty good teams( 4-6 quality kids). When you add Grundy to the mix(with their schedule) you will be promoting Single A Va all over the country. C'burg, Faquier, and Poquoson will all travel promoting Double A. Great Bridge, Colonial Forge, and Grassfields will all travel promoting Triple A. You have potential for Nationally ranked teams in all divisions. Grundy has been winning the Ryle tournament in Ky and beating the top Ky teams and one of the top teams in the Southeast. If Grundy can continue these types of performances, and finish as State team Champion, they will be in National Rankings. This would go a long way in legitimizing Va on the National level. In a few years Va will be looked at like Pa.

  7. It does not matter if they wrestle, play basketball, play football or play with themselves. They are doing it as Grundy High School. Good luck Grundy. Get rid of the cancers that get on here and spout off. Play as one and quit trying to run one program in the ground and trying to make the other program better. As has been said on here, you guys are using the same players. When you down one program you are downing the other because it is the same kids playing. Play the game for what it is meant to be played for. In 20 years everyone will be all state or state champions in their minds and the stories they tell. Or better yet they will be on some message board trying to prove they have the answers to every problem and no one else has the right to express theirs, without being called names.

I agree with some of your rant, but I think the rest is just another forum rant. (I don't like you criticizing me or mine) I think that the Drop will help to bring the programs together. The jealousy will minimize when all programs are successful. I think this is the first time anyone has helped the kids in this situation. Everyone wants to say scheduleing would be harder, we won't be playing in the SWD, or we can't make as much money from the gate. I think each team will do better. Will B-Ball beat TV? it is a close game.(competeing in playoffs) F-ball will have a hard time with Haysi and Honaker, but should pick up some district wins.( Better than currently doing) Wrestling should be a state powerhouse ( doing better than currently doing) Cross Country should improve to the State Level ( doing better). As for the advice, I do not mean for anything that I have said to demean or degrade anyone. I have been blunt, direct, and to the point with many of my examples of Grundy needing to compete on a level playing field. I know, as with all single A teams, Grundy shares athletes and as my name suggests I get pleasure from every story of prosperity I hear or read about any of the sports programs. And I may offend you here, but unless they are lying in 20 years they will not be all state or state champs unless they have the opportunity to do so. Oh yea, who has been calling names? They should be sat with their nose in the corner.

  8. And with that schedule, you can count on being knocked out of the playoffs in the first round every year you make it. If you make it........

Playoffs, you want to talk about playoffs I'm talking about winning some games:-)

You may be right about the weaker schedule, but at least with that schedule you get fans and strengthen the schedule as the team allows.

  9. why do you want put down wrestling it has nothing to do with wrestling or football it is because GHS has less than 430 kids now you do the math but mr. north grundy and AD will do every thing to stop it thay have killed the school so why stop now.

I agree with your math. It isn't like Grundy has 1000 kids and are dropping to be the biggest single A team in the state. They will be middle of the pack in terms of enrollment.

  10. I know that seeing the "old SWD Rivalries" would be good if we could compete with them. We haven't won a district game in a long time. Very few were close. I hate to say it like this, but judging from the "home crowd" I would say that people do not like to watch the abuse. Here is what I think. If you can keep some of the SWD, it will be hard, and schedule a 8+ win season the F-ball program could have something to be proud of. Here is what I would schedule.

    week 1 East Ridge

    week 2 Shelby Valley

    week 3 Twin Valley

    week 4 Big Creek

    week 5 Hurley

    week 6 Pound

    week 7 Appalachia

    week 8 Haysi

    week 9 Castlewood

    week 10 Honaker

This would get Grundy about 6-0 every year. The fans will come out. 6-1 Fans come out. 6-2 fans come out. 6-3 fans come out 6-4 is a winning season. I know this is just words on a page and they need to get the schedule they can compete with. How do you eat an elephant?

  11. True however with 6 dates (7 if you count the Bye week and 8 if you count the week after the season is over) I think there will be an opening plus the teams that Honaker, TV and Hurley will have to drop in order to pick up Grundy will all be looking for an extra game.

I have no doubt that scheduleing for 2011 will be a a pain in the butt for football but it is nothing that can't be overcome

And that is why the A.D. gets the big bucks. To put up with a few minor problems that can be fixed through a little extra effort.

  12. In years past, Grundy would compete the season long behind the eightball and then come back to the level playing field. The numbers are very hard to overcome. The team this year is strong. However that doesn't justify putting them in a group 5X larger. You talk about tough times, this group is not it. I think about the "what if". What if Grundy had went Single A in 1999. How many 4X state champs have been "screwed by the system"? Matt Lee beat a 2X single A state champ everytime they wrestled. I look at the group comming through now, Ethan Owens, Jon Dotson, Jeremy Hurley, Sean Vandyke, Tanner McClanahan, Tyler McClanahan, Dakota Vance, Cody Rife all would already have state titles and many would have 2 or more. Is Single A not as tough as Double A? Yes. However what division do we belong in? Single A

  13. Aahhh my young patawan, let me explain. We will train against the best competition in the country to be better prepared to wrestle the state level competition. In years that the team is not as strong you compete against teams that are not on the National Level. However as long as individuals are achieving National Rankings and beating Nationally Ranked wrestlers we will continue to go as far as we need to to face the toughest competition in the Country and then Return to the State level for the post season. Wrestling against the top kids in the country makes you tougher than wrestling kids that just started wrestling.

  14. The Coaching staff schedules everything but district matches in wrestling. I doubt that there schedule will change much. The only Changes I see would be replacing any SWD matches with other District teams (if any are there). If no district matches are required then they will fill those dates as well.

One other thing, If Grundy changes its schedule what would stop them from having 8+ wins? I think that if they plan it right, in our area they could be "king of the area" - Buchanan County, Pike KY, and McDowell WV. That doesn't mean we are a single A powerhouse, but you should be able to schedule a paper champ.

  15. I'm sure Luke Owens and David Scammell would play us with Appalachia and Castlewood. Then you have teams like JJ Kelly, JI Burton and Clintwood Single A teams who have played us regularly in the past. I think that these teams have Football - Rye Cove, Coeburn, Lee High, Virginia High, John Battle, Powell Valley, and any other Single A team with a football team inside an Hour Drive would be fine with playing a a game. Now, Eastridge should be a mainstay on the schedule and Iager or Bradshaw should be too. If it takes a "bowl" game to get somes games, good, the kids benefit from the bigger atmosphere and normally something to take home.(Jersey or T-shirt) I think that all of these guys are strong canidates for the schedule in the next term. I've seen Grundy play most of these guys before.

  16. Other than competeing on a level playing field, I do not see any other advantages. I think if they went down last year like they were supposed to we wouldn't have to drop mid cycle. I did hear that the only team Grundy will have to add to the F-Ball schedule is Honaker. The SWD teams will probabally drop us after the cycle is over then we can fill in with Single A teams.

  17. I like going into the Region District Champs, imagine that! I Think that when Hurley and Garden had wrestling teams they dualed and the winner was District Champ and loser Runner-up. I think that the Region tournament may be reconfigured adding the BDD. I think that the CMD would allow Grundy in to wrestle if it was a problem. I think this is probabally the road any of the sports that the BDD teams do not have will take. (Finding the next closest district with the sport)

  18. I do not know where you are going with this. I was justifying the single A drop with the number of athletes we have at Grundy. You have Identified 3 people over your lifetime who could run fast. In the higher population areas, teams have 3 on their team every year. Last year when the A.D. had agreed on single A, the LPD said they did not want Grundy and the BDD said come on in. The LPD move seems a little moronic with the drive, but I do not understand the way some of those people think. I know the LPD has more sports. I assumed it would work in other sports like it will work in wrestling. 1 of 2 possibilities. 1. Team in a district without any other schools with the sport becomes District Champion and advances to Region. 2. Team joins another district tournament for the sport. I think in Wrestling most schools will want Grundy in the first possibility. The wrestlers will go into the Region as a #1 seed. Another possibility would be all Grundy Wrestlers going in as 4 seeds, but then the top wrestlers would have Grundy kids first round and I do not think their coaches will allow this. Which is why I think they will go to Region as District champs.
