Dresser quit coaching to sell insurance in Iowa. His wife, a native of Blacksburg, did not know what life in "tornado alley" would be like. Every thunderstorm is a tornado warning. She said she wanted to come back to Va. The Grundy job had been filled so he moved to B'burg and started coaching at C'burg.
C'burg wasn't invited back. This was due to the Ex- Byrd Coach Ronnie Long. He took a stand against the transfering of wrestlers into C'burg. This was after the season that 12 of the 14 wrestlers were transfers. Right or Wrong Coach Long said I do not have to schedule them. In turn, C'burg started their own tournament, called the Big Blue. They have some of the teams that used to go to the Big Orange. A few years ago it was a hot topic. The Roanoke times did a story on it.
I was over there earlier, the outpouring of support for the family is amazing. One Dr. said they couldn't believe all those people were for one patient. My thoughts and Prayers to the family.
It is Amazing that those kids were able to excel in the smaller programs. They all deserve the honor. I think the Grundy Wrestling Club has been the model for success in the state for the last 25 years. This just goes to show what the kids in this area are capible of when they strive to be the best. The coaching has been great. There hasn't been 10 coaches with 2 state titles in the record books. Grundy has had 3. Ben Ward was an All american at ODU and coached 2 State championship teams and breifly held the State Scoring record (which more than doubled the old record) Top Team National Ranking was #8. Kevin Dresser was a 2X all american at Iowa and coached 8 state championship teams setting the current scoring record and Top Team National Ranking of #4. Travis Fiser is a 2X All American from Iowa who has coached 4 state championship teams Top team National Ranking is #2 and Coached Both of Grundy's National Champions. Grundy holds State team records for Consecutive state titles with 12, State team scoring record at 327.5, and they rank second behind Great Bridge for most team titles with 15 (Great Bridge has 18). They also have dominated the region for 20+ years.
If you are talking about Mountain Mission in Grundy that would be good, but they are a private school and I do not think they work with the VHSL (not sure). I remember a few years ago a kid from mountain mission wanted to play baseball at Grundy and the VHSL would not let him because MM was private. Supposedly in the same case if the two schools had been public then he would have gotten to play. His school didn't have a team. I hope they do have a team though. It is hard enough to find someone to play around here, getting a ready made "cross town" rival would be fun.
All the kids did a good job tonight. The team was working hard and looked like they have come together a lot since the scrimmages. I look forward to this weekend to see just how much they have improved. We played Kelly in the scrimmage and if we stop the big plays we can go on a win streak. And Lance, No fake punts, HB Passes or any other "signature" plays from the past. They did good all around!
26-24 on a last minute drive to win. Ethan Owens throws a 10 yard half back pass to Cody Justus to tie and then I think he ran in the 2 point conversion for the win. The refs were one sided, but a strong will and good coaching got them through a hard faught victory.
I thought everyone was changing to a J.V. and 8th and 9th and cutting out middle school.?. I know grundy does not have the 6th 7th and 8th team anymore the eighth grade is with the varsity now.
With 2 a days starting tomorrow, How many kids does each team have out? Are their any surprises? Anyone hit puberty hard and now a beast? Just thought I would start the thread.
I know a few years back Jackie Toney played football for Radford and wrestled at C'burg in the same season. His parents were seperated(on paper)and rented an apartment in C'burg for him to live in.
