  1. Possible loop-hole scenario, based on what could have happened last season : (I'm not picking on anyone here, it's just that I'm familiar with these guys and this particular game) Ron Brown : Well, Richlands leads Va. High 49-0 with 25 seconds left on Homecoming night at Ernie Hicks Stadium. The Blues will go to 8-0 and prepare for next weeks' showdown with Carroll Co. down in Hillsville with the Southwest District title on the line. Dave Cox : Richlands just has to stop the Bearcats once more for their 6th shutout of the season. Ron : There's the snap. The Bearcats' QB drops back in the pocket... and TAKES OFF!! He's headed towards the end zone!, and no one can catch him!! Dave : Yeah, Ron, but he's headed back towards his OWN end zone!!! Ron : He's runnning around back there as the clock ticks down! And now he steps out of bounds! Oh, my! With 1 second left, the score is now 51 to nothing!, and Mance won't be on the sidelines next week for the biggest game of the season!!!! Dave : I've had a bad feeling about that rule every since it was put in, and now I know why!
  2. AA Runner-up TA will also have a new coach next season, as Flinchum stepped down today. http://www.dailynews-record.com/sports_details.php?AID=4509&CHID=20
  3. 7 - Appy : 1971,'89,'92,'94,'96,'97, 2002 4 - Gate : 1970, '74, '97, 2003 4 - P.V. : 1994, '95, '97, '98 3 - Clint. : 1974, '75, '78
  4. 1969 doesn't really count - no playoffs - just "fictional". Actually, Salem sirst started in 1896 & fielded their first football team in 1919. When that bldg. burned, a new one was built and called Andrew Lewis. The Wolverines went oa a new bldg. in '77 and Salem was re-born.
  5. Word on the LPD board is that Harry Fry has passed away. The Pennington Gap native was head coach at St. Charles & Saltville, but made his name at Gate City before passing the torch to Dominick Colobro in 1982. 228-71-7 : Gate City : 1953-58, 60-82 7 - 2 - 1 : Saltville : 1959 24 - 6 : Saltville : 50-52 0 - 9 : St. Charles : 1949 --------- 259-88-8 : career
  6. The only games moved last year were Burton-Castlewood and the V-T game at the Stone Castle. That was the week Unaka trekked up to Hurley... I met their bus in front of Shoneys about 5:30 or so. The Bristol race is 8/26 (opening week), so y'all will see/blend in with some of the Busch race traffic on your way back from E-town. Speaking of, this weekend is the All-Star race!!! WOOOOOO!
  7. Richlands paper has a pic and said he landed about 400' before the light, then coasted through it and across the bridge before pulling into the median. But I think they have the name wrong. It the M'neer has it right, which one was it .. dad or son?
  8. Moving to a neutral site would be worse. Travel expenses would rise (the "home" team would need bus drivers and probably a road meal). Plus, you'd prob. have to pay something to the host school. And you'd prob. get fewer "home" fans turn out. Since the VHSL is setting this thing so that each Region has "control" of the extra round, I can't see them stepping in. I'm not sure of how the $$$ works, but expenses might be deducted from the gate before any $ goes to C'ville. In the past 2 years, the following 9-1 teams did NOT make the playoffs: Varina (AAA-Central), Orange (AA-II), George Wythe (A-C) & Haysi (A-D). AAA-Eastern is all ga-ga over the new format, and AA-IV seems to be in favor of it, so I'd say we'll see AT LEAST half of the Regions using it.
  9. I wonder what would happen if, say, a 6th seeded team says something like, oh, 'we don't want to drive from Tunstall to Grundy'. Other than a forfeit, would someone issue some sort of penality or probation?
  10. Galax paper reports that Region IV could vote on an expanded playoffs format in July - possibly a 6-team deal that would give 2 teams an opening-round bye. http://www.galaxgazette.com/articles/2006/05/10/news/sports/sports03.txt
  11. Jersey barriers are now in place behind town restricting traffic to 1 lane. Expect the same to happen later this week going through town, since a new 1-lane stripe is in place. Both "short-cuts" connecting the upper and lower levels have been closed. Word is they'll start Monday with the Rife Chevrolet building.
  12. you mean RE-join. Odd that the last SWD game they played was against each other : Marion lost at home 14-10 in Nov., 1985.
  13. don't see it happenin'. Hate to tell ya this Ed, but Loudoun's planing two MORE high schools in the next 5 years - 1 to relieve L. Val. and 1 for L. Co.
  14. Those numbers are the actual membership numbers for grades 9-11 on 9/30/05, which the VHSL used for the 2007 realignment. Briar Wood's feeder Mid. School had 216 8th graders, so they'll have about 713 in Sept., or about 634 in grades 9-11. The county's projection says 799 total, which I guess would be about 713 in 9-11. Freedom's feeder M.S. had 254 8th graders, so they'll have about 807 in Sept., or about 675 in grades 9-11. The county's projection says 818 total, which I guess would be about 685 in 9-11. Both opened with full Fr. & So. classes, plus any Juniors who wanted to transfer for whatever reasons (leadership roles in clubs/sports, location, peers, outcasts, etc). Loudoun Co. built both to hold 1600 total down the road, but each class will only be around 250 for the time being.
  15. Paintsville's Floyd County Times (registration required) says Antwan Marsh signed a free agent contract with the Indy. Colts & E.J. Underwood signed with the N.Y. Giants. Not bad for an NAIA school that just started playing football in 2000.
  16. VHSL Exec. Committee meeting highlights from this week : Finals for football & wrestling next school year - same places as this year. New all-sports rule allows a school to play in 2 pre-season jamborees (jam must replace a scrimmage or benefit game) - effective immediately. These start in the Fall of 2007 : R&R committee's new set-up from last month was approved. Expanded football playoffs. Any Region can add one playoff round in what would be the 12th week of the regular season. If done, the highest remaining seed will play the lowest remaining seed in the Reg. semis. (basically they re-seed) New ratings scale. Eliminates the 1-point difference in Divisions within each Group & increases the value of a win. Changes points earned for losing to an opponent to : 4 for A, 8 for AA & 12 for AAA. Each win is now worth 12 points. Same bonus points as before - 2 for each win by a team you beat, 1 for each win by a team you lost to (must be a VHSL rating scale recognized opoponent - public school). Here's a run down of the points each team was worth in 2005, followed by their 2007 value: 2005 , 2007 W/L 30/13, 34/15 - Carol - Div. 4, 7 wins 22/ 9 , 26/11 - Abing - Div. 4, 3 wins 35/15, 40/18 - Rich. - Div. 3, 10 wins 31/13, 36/16 - Grah. - Div. 3, 8 wins 27/11, 32/14 - Taze. - Div. 3, 6 wins 19/ 7 , 24/10 - Grun. - Div. 3, 2 wins 15/ 5 , 20/ 8 -example- Div. 3, 0 wins 30/11, 34/13 - Giles - Div. 2, 9 wins 22/ 7 , 26/ 9 - Blfd. - Div. 2, 5 wins 14/ 3 , 18/ 5 - Kelly - Div. 2, 1 wins 27/ 9 , 32/12 - Narz. - Div. 1, 8 wins 21/ 6 , 26/ 9 - Bland - Div. 1, 5 wins 15/ 3 , 20/ 6 - T.Val - Div. 1, 2 wins This was designed to put an emphasis on winning. Notice in Div. 3 that a win over winless 'example' in 2005 was worth the same as a loss to undefeated Richlands. In the new system, the win will be worth more than the loss. An unexpected benefit is that we don't have to wait until Oct. to confirm which Div. an out of state school is.
  17. the latest from the 'Burg(s) : The "5 guys" weren't released from their scholarships by the ath. dept., so they filed a University appeal which will be heard after finals. Meanwhile, Jantzen backed out of his oral committment and is headed off to IU (the other one - Indiana)
  18. 'Hoos hire alum It's 2000 ACC wrestler of the year (and NCAA runner-up at 125) Steve Garland, who's been as an asst. the past 6 seasons at Cornell, which has finished in the top 5 the past couple of seasons.
  19. Roanoke Times says C'burg will promote Weber, but not official yet.
  20. You can basically take last year's schedule and switch the location, since this is the 2nd year of the 2-year contracts. Any other changes should be limited to games against out-of-state teams, since they're on a diff. cycle and might do something unusual (like break a contract). And the first VHSL release ALWAYS has some mistakes, which are usually fixed by early Aug.
  21. 3 guesses, and the first 2 don't ount. never saw that comin'!!! ;-) Wonder if this will be the deciding factor for Grundy to stay in AA a while longer? http://www.hokiesports.com/wrestling/recaps/20060414aaa.html
  22. Not now - he's already got one. At least 4 diff. newspapers had stories last month about him taking over at Ashe. Co.
  23. hmmmm, 'Eers and the I? http://www.dailymail.com/news/Sports/2006041013/
