  1. "So Haysi 28-14. THats a stretch but thats my opinion being as I am one of the few be part of the old Grundy vs. Haysi game they are mad over, and to see Haysi play this year. I think that score would have been the other way around at 28-14 Grundy. Haysi reminds me a lot of Tazwell. Which I think would have beaten Haysi last year and Grundy beat Tazwell so you do the math. Haysi's best ever QB and WR were in the late 90's and set a lot of state records. They werent there last year so Grundy gets the edge." I agree that Grundy "COULD" have beaten Haysi last year maybe by 1 score if they played well...I wont argue that but totally disagree about Tazewell. You are right that one of Haysi's best receivers (Bostic) played against Grundy in the late 90's but you are incorrect about QB...the top 3 ever at Haysi: Gulley 85-87, Hackney 88-91, and Compton 92-95 never played against Grundy. Grundy and Haysi only met in the 96 and 97 seasons both of which were down years for Haysi(even though they still won the BDD both years) meanwhile Grundy had two of their best teams ever. The '96 game was 7-0 with only minutes to go in the game. I give Grundy the advantage heading into this season...i dunno about last year, i think it would have been a very interesting match up. The reason Clintwood wanted to schedule Grundy is because they felt like they handled them last year in the preseason and Haysi beat Clintwood so to use your logic "you do the math."
  2. No he got a look from VT and NC State but chose instead not to go to college because he got engaged...too bad
  3. You are talking about Jake Colley I assume? One of the more overrated football players in Haysi history in my opinion...great basketball player, good kid, overrated football player, well I take that back he was pretty tough at defensive back, just overrated at QB...and kicker
  4. No Haysi didnt have Marcum or whoever else you said and Grundy didnt have Sperow or Jones...whats the difference?
  5. Yeah I said 97 thinking of the class of '97 but it was the '96 football team when they had Scammell, Copenhaver, Josh Justus and that crew. With all the crazy junk that I have read on here I didn't know there was a credibility standard to be met...seems like most posters are high school players who think there team is the greatest no matter what evidence and facts you put before them. Thats all fine but try to be a little realistic. I wasn't the one who raised th issue of who was better between Grundy and Haysi last year but when I see someone make a post that there is no comparison and it would be a blow out I take exception to that if they don't have any basis or reasoning behind it. All I'm saying is why do you think that? If you are going to disrespect other teams or programs then have some kind of reasoning to back it up. I said that I thought both teams looked fairly equal with the exception of Grundy's tailback...I don't think that was a major shock to make that statement. I think it would have been a good game thats all...but they didnt play so we will never know.
  6. I don't think there is much difference at all in AA and A. Things may have changed a bit but I know when I played most of the AA teams couldn't contend with the top A teams. If I recall correctly my senior year I think the final poll in the Bristol Herald was something like: 1. Lebanon 2. Haysi 3. Coeburn 4. Appalachia 5.Graham I would be willing to bet that in last years top 10 final poll atleast 7 and maybe 8 of the teams were single A: PV, GC, Honaker, Haysi, Lebanon, Burton, George Wythe, Clintwood.
  7. [ QUOTE ] Grundy vs. Burton or Haysi last year would have been a blowout...no doubt about it. [/ QUOTE ] Blow out? The best team Grundy ever had in '97 couldnt blow out a 5-5 Haysi team that year so I seriously doubt it would have happened last year. Especially after I saw both teams play back to back in the Coal Bowl...Haysi had atleast as good a defense as Grundy and probably a little bit better and the only advantage Grundy had over Haysi offensively was at tailback. More like a toss up than a blowout.
  8. "BigGameJames Haysi Will not win 7 or 8 games this year. tAnd even if they do It will still hurt Grundy (more than likely) becasue Grundy will pick up more points from a team 4-6 AA than a 7-3 A team." Why do people keep saying things that simply aren't true? Let me try to break it down into simpler terms: If you defeat a division 3 AA team that is 4-6 it is worth 23 pts...if you defeat a division 2 single A team that is 7-3 it is worth 26 points. Its a fairly simple system. 9 times out of 10 it will be wiser for teams to schedule traditionally successful single A teams such as GC, PV, Honaker, Haysi, and Clintwood than it would be to schedule traditionally average or weak AA teams: Abingdon, Marion, Tazewell, and lately Lee High. As for Haysi not winning atleast 7 games? Well I just don't see who has a real shot at beating them with the players that Haysi has coming back other than Grundy, Honaker, or Clintwood. A few teams may give them a pretty good game like Lee or Rye Cove but I will be genuinely surprised if they don't win atleast 7...just my opinion.
  9. It was not my intent to talk trash, sorry if that was the way it was perceived...just making simple statements thats all. I know the majority of Haysi fans and players have wanted to play Grundy every year ever since I can remember. When I was in school in the early 90's Haysi always called Grundy and they never wanted to play...then Grundy developed some pretty strong teams in the late 90's and played Haysi for a few years. You are right that Grundy did call Haysi this year and the call was not returned...I heard that also and made a post noting hard feelings from Haysi's coach because of a Copenhaver fake kneel touchdown pass with no time left on the clock in the '97 game with Grundy leading 13-0 I believe it was. I said in that post that I thought it was silly to still hold a grudge from 7 or 8 years ago and that I hope the two teams would schedule each other...I'm very glad they are going to play again and hope they will play every year. Haysi already has Clintwood and Honaker as close-by rival games so adding Grundy could just mean another geographical rival game for Haysi, so I'm all for that and I'm sure that most fans and players are too.
  10. "actually Grundy got more points losing to Richlands last year then they would have received beating Haysi." I don't know how you figured that or if you just came up with it off the top of your head but either way its total bull. Losing to Richlands last year earned Grundy 15 points...beating Haysi last year earned the winner 30 points, just in case you are not a math major thats double what you got for losing to Richlands. No one that Grundy defeated last year gave them more points than if they had beaten Haysi.
  11. I have no idea what you are talking about Mr. Primetime because I never said anything about Hurley.
  12. How could it hurt Grundy in the points? They will likely be the favorite to win the game and it rarely hurts you when you beat a team that consistently averages 7 to 8 wins per year. If they would have had Haysi on their schedule last year I venture to say that they would have earned more points by winning that game than by winning any other game on their schedule with the exception of Richlands and alot more than playing a sub-par Kentucky team.
  13. Well almost everybody is off on November 11th if thats the week you are talking about...other than that they don't have any common open weeks. Most teams don't want to play that week because they would prefer to have a week off before the playoffs start...and if they don't make the playoffs it allows the football players who play basketball to start getting ready for hoops. Make sense?
  14. "and as far as i know the Haysi thing is not a done deal yet and if they can find anyone in a 5 state region to play other than Grundy you know they will." What is the rationale behind that comment?
  15. so how many starters does hurley have returning?
  16. Lance will most likely be the favorite to inherit the starting position assuming Kevin Viers doesn't decide to play. Either way it may surprise some but it could be a positive to have a new QB due to Colley likely committing more to the running game which means more carries for the talented trio of Ryan Jones, Zach Counts, and Elijah Owens.
  17. Wow..head to head loser be declared the champ...i still can't get over that one!
  18. I completely disagree with that perspective because I believe that head to head is the only true way to determine the best team...its the way the playoffs are set up, its what college football needs...its the very basic ingredient to competition on the gridiron itself...go out and beat the man in front of you. point systems are fine if you have to have them but cannot measure up even close to actually meeting the opposition and deciding it on the field
  19. who are you assuming will be the Tiger's QB then?
  20. I guess that was Pocy's first and last BDD title...they came into Haysi at 8-0 in '90 and ranked #3 in the state but were handed their only loss of the season and denied a 2nd BDD championship. What is considered co-champs? In '84 Garden and Haysi each had one loss with Haysi winning the head to head match-up 18-6 and Garden not making the playoffs. I would think the head to head match-up was the tie breaker?
  21. Jones is tough but Haysi has some other veterans coming back as well...Wade Sperow and Jake Colley were the only significant losses in my opinion. Speedy Zach Counts we be coming back after missing last season with a broken leg. Also watch for Lance Compton to become a defensive star this season...don't be surprised with an 8-2 or even 9-1 Haysi team this season.
  22. Yeah I forgot to mention Castlewood, I knew they were in CVD...I always remember my dad and my uncle talking about Rich Valley and them being a "cheap shot" type team so I just assumed they were in the CVD also.
  23. Who won the BDD in '78?
  24. So Hurley only won in '82 and '92? Garden won in '81, '83, '86, and '89? I would have thought Hurley had atleast 3 BDD titles...always tough to play over at the cliff. Only 2 championships in almost 30 years for the Rebels...hard to believe they are in 2nd place in the BDD poll right now, these people must know something that I don't about the upcoming season...its not like Haysi lost that much!
