  1. [ QUOTE ] It is my KNOWLEDGE that the votes were calculated by the Tazewell coach who did attend the meeting but did not have a vote and that those votes were counted in the company of ALL voting coaches so if there was a problem trust me it would have been addressed... [/ QUOTE ] true, mitchell was non-voting. it is MY knowledge that one coach of the remaining ones gave her a 2 and another gave her a 1. and, those coaches--along with a third--left the meeting puzzled and discussing, shall we say, mitchell's math skills. i'm glad you gave her a 6, if that's what you honestly feel she deserved; that's the way postseason voting should be handled. having seen her play also, i disagree with your ranking, but c'est la vie. so, you're a coach. and, your team played tazewell. i'm assuming you're in the highlands, because you seem very familiar with hunter, and southwest teams typically play highlands teams more than piedmont teams. oh, and allie played aau with some abingdon girls. it's interesting to me, though, that you bring up "what she is and what it takes to defend her." why? because the voting highlands teams were quite talented this season, and it strikes me as strange that they had to put forth quite the strenuous effort to defend one player, when neither carroll nor graham (from the inferior, lesser-talented swd, mind you) seemed to have a bit of trouble frustrating allie and exposing her for what she is-- a cocky and arrogant player who has, up until this year, made a name for herself based off of the talent that was around her--the most over-hyped player in the region, who quits on plays and asks to be taken out of games in which she's clearly frustrated, rather than try to fight through slumps, like a jenny keene or jessi watts. case in point: if she was such a wonderful, fabulous player, a.) why did she have a worse year this season than last? it was her senior year, her time to shine. step up and seize the opportunity to lead a young team. b.) why was she voted the 3rd best player in the swd? and don't even tell me it was political, because this one wasn't. it's not like it was even close: NO swd coach voted for allie as poy but her own. that speaks volumes. btw, i totally agree with you on redick. kid's really talented.
  2. yeah, it was a really good one, and i'm not big on soccer.
  3. from what i understand of the region iv meeting, the tazewell coach went to the region iv meeting to lobby for allie and was (how, i have no clue) given the task of counting votes. so, his player mysteriously ends up on first team, while a co-poy (granted, in the weakest district) got the last available slot on second team?? i, for one, smell a rat. but, whatever makes him able to sleep at night. vhsca meetings are a complete waste of time for region iv teams, anyway.
  4. although i disagree with you on the jackson kid, coaches in the other regions of va operate under the assumption that region iv doesn't exist, which is completely unfair. may i add that allie hunter as second team is absolutely, insanely ridiculous? i suppose her coach went to the vhsca meeting also... probably counted votes there, too. *sigh*
  5. in virginia, the best throw in outdoor track for girls was 43'01" and for guys was 58'4 1/2".
  6. same with grayson county, who has more students than graham, being single a...
  7. [ QUOTE ] is it a elective for everygrade or does it replace ur gym class [/ QUOTE ] it's an elective. you must also take pe/driver ed. your sophomore year.
  8. vt doesn't usually deter commits from playing sports other than football. so, i'd say it'd be up to austin whether or not he suits up.
  9. good. you fellas need something to do in the springtime. it's not like any of you run track or anything...haha
  10. pocy get up a boys team yet, eh?
  11. [ QUOTE ] Is being offered in your junior year rare? [/ QUOTE ] not at all. tech has had a jr. linebacker from myrtle beach (bruce taylor) committed since mid-september of '06. to kids from swva, though, full d-1 offers at all are rare.
  12. check out that jump from 33rd to 3rd. niiiice...
  13. who's going to be carroll's center next season? putting singleton there would be a huge mistake, imo, but he's the tallest returning player. rogers is erratic, but he may be the only other viable option there... travis will have to work super hard to come back from his surgery, which is (i've heard) why he's doing it now and missing part of football. definitely best of luck to him, though.
  14. carroll's always solid in distance. megan roper (who finished first in swd xc) ditched soccer for track this year. our girl sprinters/jumpers/hurdlers are very young. our throwers are all new, and i doubt they'll be competitive, but hey, they could surprise me.
  15. honorable mention is whoever the coach feels deserves recognition. some coaches in other sports have been known to nominate their entire team, practically. it's great to be proud of your kids, but naming so many kind of devalues it, imo.
  16. jacob's a great kid and a heckuva player, but mulkey's shot is straight up sick.
  17. [ QUOTE ] i think chelsea gallinger will be one of the best in the district and she will be a sophmore. [/ QUOTE ] she's certainly a player. needs to work on becoming a consistent scoring threat...develop her shot, etc. kelsey, you're a pure athlete. i'd say you need to get stronger. part of that will come naturally as you stay involved with the game and grow into your body, and part of that is time spent in the weightroom. also, in addition to what someone said above, work on learning to use your body to your advantage, particularly when driving to the basket. basketball is about positioning, but mainly about knowing your strengths and using them to help hide your weaknesses. for carroll, watts is returning, and probably the biggest thing she needs to improve, imo, is her shot consistency, but especially her shot speed. if she wants to play at the next level, she needs to be able to get her shot off much quicker than she does right now. also, kayla goins is another talented swd freshman. she also needs to live in the weightroom this summer and improve her first step speed, as well as her court vision. like many young players, she seems to have tunnel vision from time to time. i think goins played a large part in why courtney edwards was underutilized: watts can't always feed her the ball from the point, and goins didn't look inside nearly enough.
  18. [ QUOTE ] I didn't realize that 3 schools controlled the districts well being. If so, then one of the 3 teams would have won the district hands down. The only power shift may be Caroll will have a little stronger competition with Abingdon being added. This could be rumor, but I overheard that next year any other district team playing a Tazewell County team had to play barefooted. [/ QUOTE ] perhaps i should have clarified myself a bit. first off, i have deeply rooted connections in tazewell county, and have no hard feelings whatsoever toward any tazewell county schools. what i speak of to come is not a competitive power shift, but a political one. competitively, little will change. heck, most swd teams play abingdon and marion already, so no surprise there. but, when the coaches get in a room at the end of the season to decide all-swd, the tazewell county "bloc" will no longer be able to stick together and get their way. is it really that big a deal? not in the grand scheme of things. but, as someone closely involved with athletics at cc, it will be nice to see our kids--as well as grundy athletes--have more of a fair shot at postseason accolades. no, the three tc teams haven't controlled the district's well-being (except, perhaps in football) but they certainly have controlled which athletes deserve to be honored and who gets left out.
  19. idk about that, but i'd say grundy's rather impressive streak of consecutive region titles will come to an end next season with the addition of the river ridge to region iv. whoever thought that was a good idea clearly was under the influence...
  20. [ QUOTE ] Why won't anybody answer the question of how many win Richlands and Tazewell have? [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] we'll see next year about ur team and if carrol does bad are you still gonna say that watts shouldnt get recognition because her team wasnt as good? [/ QUOTE ] nice point, dral. as i previously said, i think the swd coaches got first team right, as in those are your best 5 players in the district this season. second team, sutherland definitely should've been there over morrow, but other than that, i think that's also an accurate representation. region iv voting, i have major issues with, but those are mostly from a logistical standpoint of how things were run at the meeting. i believe you'll all know what my qualm is whenever you get a chance to see the list. i just wish i could share with you all exactly why it is that i have such a problem with it. believe me, it's more than which names ended up where that i find shady... bcram, i think your question's going unanswered because nobody really knows the actual numbers. heck, i couldn't even tell you carroll's exact record. district record, sure. overall, i haven't got a clue. oh, and btw, olewave nailed it with his math analogy. grundy folks would certainly understand, for they've been in the swd far longer than we have at carroll...can i just say how i can't wait to add abingdon and marion next year? can you say (potential) "power shift?"
  21. it's a fine line you're walking if you go that route, bcram. while a team's success certainly should be somewhat of a mental factor in determining which players are better than others, it shouldn't be an automatic, imo. for example: although i don't believe jenny keene deserves co-poy, i definitely think she deserves to be first team all-swd over carroll's webb and edwards, as does hunter. true, great players find ways to win games, but there's not one single girls player in this area that can carry an entire team on her back for the whole season. in the end, the only people being hurt by political stuff at postseason meetings are the players, not the coaches. it is a shame, though, when a coach has a personal problem with coaches from other schools and "screws over" those coaches' players come voting time.
  22. [ QUOTE ] Well at least one of the Tazewell County coaches understands loyalty -- [/ QUOTE ] in one post of yours on another thread, you speak of how voting should be unbiased, and on this one, you play the loyalty card. you can't have it both ways. either a coach is fair and objective, voting for the best players regardless of which uniform they put on and play in, or they vote based on which coaches they're friends with and which schools they like more than others and which coach's vote they may need to have in their back pocket for upcoming years. what you mean is that everyone should be fair and objective as long as they see things your way. then, if they don't happen to agree with you, loyalty rules. that, my friend, is called being hypocritical.
  23. well, since we're back on this subject... at the state level, each region gets one vote, so the coaches representing that region must come to a consensus.
  24. [ QUOTE ] the best and most talented player should get the POY -- it should not be political -- ask Motley which player if he had the choice would he have on his team... [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Also as I understand it Motley gets $500 if he is he Coach of the Year and $500 if he has the POY on his team... [/ QUOTE ] i agree that postseason voting shouldn't be political, but it always is. (see: region iv voting) seems to me that if motley thought hunter was such a fabulous player, he would have voted for her for swd player of the year instead of watts. furthermore, seeing as hunter only received one coach's vote for poy--her own--every other team in the district feels the same way. no one questions her talent, but her on-court attitude certainly leaves something to be desired. imo, she wasn't even the best player on her own team, sutherland was. and yes, i know she's young. oh, and by the way, i'd bet the proverbial farm that hunter's not in an acc uniform at uva next season. intramurals, sure. an invitation to walk on is not a scholarship offer, it's a pacifying tool. if she elects to try out, coach ryan and staff will find that she's just not d-1 material. and, she's not. neither are keene or watts. it's just the way it is. like carrollfan, i can also speak up and say that your "understanding" is false, not to mention a violation of every moral, ethical, and vhsl regulation that ever existed.
  25. [ QUOTE ] And it is my understanding that Watts was not listed as the number 1 co player of the year from the SWD -- Keene was [/ QUOTE ] your understanding is correct. when your tiebreaking vote goes to a coach of a tazewell county school and a tc player is one of the co-poy's up for a vote...think about it.
