just so you know how the process works, all players named district poy are automatically 1st team all-region. you see who else got 1st team? goins. that's because you can bs and politic district coaches, but coaches outside of your district--they have eyes and brains.

the answer is easy to see, ram. when the 4 "original" swd schools stick together, they get their way. it's all political in tazewell county, everything is. combine their desire to stick up for one of their own with their frustration that carroll beats them like a drum year in and year out, as well as the fact that tazewell's coach is seemingly more concerned with getting his kids individual accolades than putting together a solid program (see: allie hunter). motley will go in and present his case; mitchell will pull strings behind the scenes. and because of that, the best player doesn't always get the recognition she deserves.

wait, so now we're going to also take a person's family's financial situation into consideration when offering athletic scholarships? i can see that one now: coach: well son, we'd love to have you come play ball at (insert college here), but since your parents make $x, you'll have to walk on so we can save the college a few bucks. nevermind that your athletic talent (should you and our team prove to be successful) could bring help bring in millions for our university and its athletic program. fact is, son, your folks are well off and we want to save scholarships for poor folks. are you serious? come on, now.

parents do move, some honestly. however, we all know that sometimes, people play the system. example? i love cburg, but look at their wrestling program. folks moving from pa and other states who "just happen" to have sons who are talented wrestlers "just happen" to end up at cburg? um, right. no offense, though, but if i'm a parent looking to make a name for my son in football, i don't move into the richlands district. it's a aa school in the sw part of va. the 804 and 757 get far more love when it comes to recruiting. in these areas, there are talented but not hyped "under the radar" kids who get a more serious look by coaches when they come to the school to recruit another player. in swva, there are no pipelines, and players like fuller and muncy are the exception to the rule.

split for time constraints, probably. frozen roads in tazewell county aren't cute, just like frozen roads in carroll aren't, either. the floor at the ccis gym is bigger than the floor at cchs. jv's are gonna be worn out :)

again, another missed point. it's not YOUR sentiment because, believe it or not, not everything in tazewell county revolves around graham high school, nor should it. now, moving on: the point is that when pocy kids were forced to choose between tazewell and graham, both principals and the superintendant and school board reps said the pocy kids would be more than welcome wherever they decided, even though yes, phs kids were booed by ghs students when they visited graham high school. some phs students chose to attend ths, others chose ghs. the point is that while no, brandon didn't score the majority of his points for the bulldogs, they are treating him as if he did. to them, there is no distinction. ths has gone above and beyond to ensure a smooth transition for these kids who the rug was pulled out from under, and they have accepted these kids without distinction, without a tag or an asterisk. to them, brandon is a bulldog, just as if he had been from day one. and, as a phs alum, i applaud the efforts of tazewell high school, even though there are folks who understandably disagree with what they are doing. strangely, though, the folks disagreeing on this board have nothing to do with tazewell high school, which only further illustrates my point. again, the point is not whether brandon would break ghs's record, the point is that hypothetically, if he did, there's zero percent chance that ghs would treat him as he is being treated by tazewell.

cole had an in-home visit by a vt coach recently. he may be an invited walk-on there. as for cole and muncy, it's great to see guys from swva get looks and offers. however, i don't think either will make much noise at the next level. hope they prove me wrong.

nice save, gman. but, it is what it is. he's put up the numbers. and if the schoolboard, er i mean cookie johnson wouldn't have been such a nasty "see you next tuesday," he'd still be putting up the numbers at phs. as it is, he was forced to choose a new school. that decision was out of his control. he made it, and though some may disagree because he didn't make every basket for ths, i appreciate the gesture made by the ths admin. it's them not only saying (so it'll sound pretty for the papers, i.e. brenda lawson) but showing that they accept the phs kids who were left without a school, without an identity. this same gesture would never been made to a former phs kid who chose ghs, and that's fact.

congrats to grundy for that, but honestly, i wouldn't expect a lot of success from them when they get up to the varsity level. abingdon and marion are consistently tough, not to mention carroll. speaking from experience, i know carroll uses their jv program explicitly as a training grounds for their varsity team, and although wins are nice at that level, the "better" players from carroll don't stay on jv for long. carroll's jv teams are usually filled with 8th graders and players who, unless they significantly improve quickly, will hardly see the floor when they get to varsity.

let's be honest--swd boys basketball isn't exactly the best virginia has to offer. that being said, swd teams better watch out for pauley. kid can shoot, and that transcends all schools and classifications.

let's just say that i do know what i'm talking about, seeing as i've worked with the guy. thanks for playing, though. he comes from a prominent family in the area, but he's extremely unprofessional and crosses the coach/friend line all too often. yes, the pocy boys like him and played for him--because they saw him as one of their buddies, not because they respected the man as a coach or for his knowledge. and, being your players' friend doesn't automatically make you a good coach; it makes you a liability. oh, and a bonehead for setting yourself up like that. beyond that, he doesn't know the intricacies of football. he didn't know how to teach the pocy kids technique and simple fundamentals of football. he got his playcalling degree from madden u. and the little success he did have at pocy was largely due to having no fewer than 2 athletes: one to take the snap and one to either catch a pass and outrun the defense or take the handoff and outrun the defense. honestly, point to a pocy game louthan coached and show me one coaching decision that made the difference between win and loss in any game. basketball, the pocy kids play basketball constantly. all he had to do was kick back and press play. he was just lucky he had talented players come through the school during his time there. true varsity coaches build a program; louthan wouldn't have done diddly squat with the next bunch of indians to come through after the pauleys graduated, and that's just fact. and let's not even let me get started on his teaching ability, or lack thereof. i could write pages on that.

louthan is not a good football coach, and he is an even worse teacher.

there aren't that many things available to former pocy students that weren't already available to them. phs had a band--an award winning band--before the sb decided to hire randy butcher, who didn't feel like teaching the class and used it as a play period instead. class offerings are mostly the same, thanks to fiber optics. the difference lies in the new school colors and the insanely long drive to pick up kids from practices or support them at games. that said, it is nice to see tazewell doing well again, and as many phs kids chose to go there, it's also nice to see them enjoying the on-field success that phs had under coach wyatt in previous years.

i'm a giant sport fan, but i also find soccer boring as a spectator. i have a hard time getting into a sport where half the body is forbidden from touching the ball for all but 2 people on the (way too large) field. soccer is the world's most popular sport because a large percentage of the world lives in poverty, and face it--soccer is way less of an expensive sport than most others, football in particular. basketball is a great example of a low-cost sport that's gaining international popularity. honestly, i'd look for basketball to equal soccer's international popularity within 30 years, simply because it's more exciting to watch. (and to play, i think.)

why hug sacramone? she choked. flat out, no sugarcoating it. we have the two best gymnasts in the world in liukin and johnson, as evidenced by their performances last night. all they needed was any of their teammates to combine to be almost as good as they are. and, they couldn't. memmel did 2 bar routines on a broken ankle, the other blonde girl severely sprained hers, so that left sacramone, who just had to not mess up on 2 disciplines. she had her chance to etch her name alongside greatness and bobbled it away, giving us a performance that was far below mediocre. TWICE. no hug forthcoming here.

fwiw, the full court press is on newsome and has been for some time. time may be running out on a decommit, though, as he's getting ready to head to hargrave for his senior season, and they have a solid reputation of keeping players to uphold their commitments once they make them.

dunkenberger is a horrible d1 college coach. and, had redick not torn an acl, the get would've been okay. as it is, it's yet another giant question mark.

he actually IS wavering because of rr, but not because of his system or personality. according to newsome, rr told him he was their "top guy," then the next week, accepted a verbal from texas qb shavodrick beaver. also, michigan is hosting top ca qb tate forcier, who, according to tate, has been told by rr that HE's their top guy. hmm... actions speak louder than words. can't blame him for being a bit shaky. i look for him to stay committed to michigan, though, and for forcier to go elsewhere.

cameras are definitely allowed. i've taken mine in many, many times.

grundy hasn't beaten carroll for at least the past 3 years. in the first two of those, carroll set school records for wins, only losing to grayson and in regionals. jv doesn't count. the way carroll builds their program, the jv squad is strictly a developing ground for varsity. talented players are moved up as soon as possible. carroll's last year's jv team had, if i'm not mistaken, one sophomore. count em--one.

i don't live in tazewell county, but a large portion of my family does. it's unfortunate. it's a beautlful county with great folks, but it's run quite poorly.
