  1. Did anybody get down to BC to see any of the teams? If so, could you fill me in on how Big Creek looked? Thanks!
  2. My understanding is that EKU (Eastern Kentucky) were also interested in this kid but an end-of-season coaching change at EKU didn't work in his favor. Glad to hear he has a chance to play at higher level than Concord. No offense to Concord.
  3. [ QUOTE ] i've played at the old field a couple of times and been there some since then. I wish the owls all the luck in the world and would love to see them go far in their last year as the owls. I hated to see the old field demolished. The big Greenstroke wall with the trains running behind it and the owl who lit up on a score. It was even on October Sky........Good luck and great job. [/ QUOTE ] Between the mountains with "Green Stroke" echoing, Owl high atop looking down, train whistle in the distance, Coach Poletti barking orders on an October Sky background...NICE! What memories that brings back to a former Owl player...thanks Fieldgeneral!
  4. Not meant to be this year but one heck of a season by the Owls none the less finishing at 6-3. Congrats on a well played season that included road wins (first in a while) and also a hard fought victory over county rival Iaeger (first in 10 years). Hopefully this will bring a little enthusiasm to the Owl program and help in the turn-out numbers come August. Lots of positives to build on for 2008!
  5. Benton is a Senior. I would say the Big Creek/Iaeger merger is a few years away as the school construction (building) has not began at this point. More like 2009 I would guess.
  6. The hard part is that many of the so called "cancers" of the team are probably some of their best athletes. Therefore it makes it hard on the coach to control all aspects of the "team". Players come out in August with the hope of winning games or at least they should. The coach walks a tight rope in trying to control the problems while keeping up morale and putting a competitve group on the field every Friday. Let's be honest, many kids have more of an interest in participating when the program wins...at least the majority of games. A losing program brings less interest along with lower numbers. It is easy to say "send all the problems home" and now the program will be fine. Unfortunately, things are not always that simple. I am not in agreement with the coach or the "problem" players just stating that everything is not always as simple as it seems. It takes a great coach along with responsible players to make a good program. When you have only one of those or neither it doesn't take long for the problems to show themselves.
  7. I think you have to include Benton from Big Creek in that group. Doesn't get the pub being from a small program that doesn't play the toughest comp weekly but puts up the numbers. Usually he doesn't carry over 15 times a game with astronomical numbers. In a bigger program he would be a star. Good size, strength and good enough speed.
  8. Congrats to Big Creek on a nice second half comeback to beat inter-county rival Iaeger on the road. This breaks a 9-game losing streak to the Cubs for the Owls. Good luck Owls in making the playoffs this year. It will be tough but as you found out Friday night...never give up!
  9. I saw that as well. But heard when the end of the 3rd quarter buzzer sounded the teams lined up, shook hands and departed the field without playing quarter number 4. I realize it wasn't much of a game but just have never heard of anything like that. You would think both teams would have liked to have had their young guys in to just go through the motions.
  10. Unable to attend but heard that the Big Creek / Twin Valley game ended after the 3rd quarter. There were no unordinary circumstances (fights, weather, lights, etc.)to cause this. I have heard of letting the clock run in the second half when the score is out of hand but never a stoppage. Unsure if maybe Twin Valley through in the towel? I would think it would have been good for both teams to get some experience, even if it was 2nd or 3rd string for one side. Any answers?
  11. Any stories on the game? I have heard nothing regarding the game besides the score (Owls lose). Looked like a shoot-out but looks can be deceiving.
  12. I didn't expect the score to get that far out but I knew BC has a good line and some talent in the backfield. Good to see the Owls win a game on the road as well. Those wins in previous years have been few and far between. Just very proud of this years team and coaches and how they have responded to adversity. In response to a previous comment: I don't see the need to put down a team after they have beaten another young team soundly and say they may not win another game the rest of the season or only one. I wish Hurley the best in their remaining season as this would benefit all. BC may not win another game or they could win them all? Who knows BUT let's leave the sour grapes at the grocery and let the kids play ball.
  13. If ANYONE has 4.3-4.4 speed they will get recruited (letter to coach/player and looked at on film anyway)...period. It may not be for football, maybe track, and they may not get "offered" but they will get looked at if the speed is truly there and recognized through a legitimate source such as a camp, track meet, college day, etc. I realize the SWV/VA schools do not get much pub but if the talent/speed is there coaches will hear about it. Schools are always looking for a diamond in the rough....no question about it. What about Gilbert H.S. (had some good Division I recruits in the past).
  14. My prediction is Big Creek 24 Hurley 16. The strong running attack and week off to prepare will help the Owls overcome a young Hurley team on HC night. I have fond memories of playing the Rebels when I was an Owl.
