  1. G-Man, thanks for letting us down here in southside know the hard cold facts on what chance the teams out of conference 37 and 38 have in the regionals. I guess we can all save gas and eating money for something else since the outcome of the tournament has already been decided. Good luck to the G-Men, maybe they have a snowballs chance of pulling off an upset. Mavahi and Dan River aren't as strong as last year, so it may be a hard row to hoe trying to get back to the state semi's this year.

  2. Martinsville lost tonight in the Piedmont District tourney finals to 5A Halifax Co. 58-41. The Dogs open up Conference 38 play Wed. at James River High School against the winner of the Giles-Floyd Co. game. The other semi-final game will be Glenvar vs.James River. I still think right now that Dan River is the class of the region down this way, can't really speak about the teams from SWVA but thru some coaches I have heard nothing but good things about VHS and Graham.

  3. Martinsville at 17-4 have lost twice to 4A GW-Danville(who they beat 82-68 the last time the played)once to 5A Halifax Co.(who they split with this year, both winning big at home)and to 1A Radford by 1 point on 2 foul shots with 3 seconds left. Like I said in a earlier post they are not unbeatable, but they play very hard on the defensive end and get a lot of turnovers, they love to run but also have the big 6-7 kid to grab a lot of rebounds and score on the inside. If they get out of conference play I believe the regionals are at Richlands, so them and Dan River will have to make the long trek out to SWVA to do battle with the teams from out there.

  4. Don't discount Dan River either. Martinsville beat them 50-39 earlier in the year but their big man Edmunds was only playing his 2nd or 3rd game after returning from an injury from football.(he's going to Tech next year on football scholly) They have beat AltaVista by 19 recently and play them again tomorrow night at home. Mavahi and Dan River are both very quick and have good size with the Holland boy from the Bulldogs being 6-6 or 6-7 and Dan River has 2 or 3 guys in the 6-4, 6-5 range. Both teams are not unbeatable, but both are pretty solid teams.

  5. Bob, appreciate your opinion on the relative strength of the 2A teams in the state, of which I haven't seen as many as you have. But with that being said, after watching the regionals last year at Floyd Co., the teams in SWVA are going to have to step it up to compete with Dan River or Martinsville, who both return a lot of key parts from their teams from last year. Martinsville(record is 16-4 at this time) especially returns 4 starters from last years team and is a team with only 1 senior playing any significant minutes. Both of these teams are going to be tough outs at the regional level.

  6. GW and Martinsville have always been big rivals in bball and a lot of talk had been going on social media building up to the game. There was heavy police presence, everybody going in had to go thru medal detectors and so on. The game was very physical with around 40 fouls and 4 T's called on both teams combined. With 4:10 left on a loose ball situation under the GW basket players got tangled up and punches were thrown. At the Mavahi gym the crowd is very close to the floor on all 4 sides and when the fight happened, all heck broke loose and the crowd rushed the floor. After about 10 minutes they got everything under control and were clearing the gym, and there was talk of finishing the game with the gym empty. But after a few more minutes police officials suggested they not resume the game because of the atmosphere outside the gym. When the discussion went on about what they were going to do to finish the game(at the time it was 55-51 GW) the Martinsville AD said that since GW was ahead at the time he would just forfeit the game to the Eagles. This whole thing was not one sided, the only 2 arrested were from Danville(obstruction of justice and felony assault of a police officer) but there is plenty of blame to be laid at the feet of the Martinsville players and fans. As far as calling the 2 coaches trashy, if you knew these two fellows personally I don't think you would feel that way. But if you feel that way so be it, nothing I can say on here will change your mind.

  7. The 4.2-4.3 guys from Buckingham must have missed the bus for the trip down. Way to go Devils, not bad for a bunch of

non-athletes. Guess ya'll just have football players down there!! Good luck next week!

  8. Look at Martinsville. 1-8 and still 16 seed, With 138 points and they will get 20 points for just showing up against GW-Danville. I guess they really get the extra points because all they play are larger schools. They play 1 2A school(Dan River) and the rest are 3A,4A, or 5A. If they had of not played Dan River and picked up the only Piedmont team they don't play,6A Franklin Co., they would be 1-8 with more points than they have now. There program is going thru a really tough time now, but how can a 1-9 team still be in the hunt for a playoff spot, no matter who you have been playing. Seems to me the system needs some tweaking!!

  9. Magna Vista 22 Tunstall 16. MV scored with 1:06 to make it 22-16,Tunstall drove the length of the field and from MV's18 yard line with 0.8 seconds left threw a pass and completed it but the receiver was stopped on the 1 yard line.

Great game by both teams. Tunstall led 16-7 with 5:50 to go but MV scored twice in 4 minutes to pull out the win.

  10. Just like in 96-97,when a district was going to be moved out of region 3 to reg. 4,the Roanoke area schools whined and complained until it ended up being the Piedmont that went west. Sqeaky wheel gets the grease again, and the funny thing is we can holler all we want to and now no one has to listen. It's a done deal!! Magna Vista should play all the Rockingham Co. NC schools they can; they are a lot closer drives to get there and it's all about saving money isn't it??

  11. Martinsville's band is not a competition band. They have been a great band for years and years doing exactly what they did last night, entertaining the crowd. They don't do the competition scene. Bassett's band is our areas band for competition. Mavahi's band is just fun to watch and to listen to!

  12. Hey PDFAN longtime no see. Dont worry about them WARRIORS they will be fine. MV will win 50-7. The HOLE is a bad place to play. Abingdon will get introduced to some football tonight. The WINE AND CHEESETTS wont know what it them. WARRIORS WARRIOS HOO HOO

Wah Wah great to hear from you, hope the Warriors don't let me down tonite. Don't seem that long ago when we were having some good times down in "The Hole". Time flies by though, got 1 married off and the other is as good as married. Hope to have some Warrior grand kids running around soon(LOL). Hope things are well with you, give us a holler sometime!!

  13. I laugh at most prediction on this board because of their love or hate affair for that team. Some just can not stop being a “fanaticâ€

Abingdon has some speed... just depends on the position unfortunately. Marion had a good defense setup and wet/cold/muddy conditions that limited what Abingdon is good at. Abingdon is not a good running team. It's not bashing on their RB or online, but it goes both ways. AHS running back sometimes loses sight of cutback lanes and holes because he's to focus on the defender, and the online sometimes just completely misses their block. They are better pass blockers (which usually is the other way for most oline)

Abingdon is going to have to score some points Friday night because their defense will have a hard time stopping Magna Vista's run. Abingdon's front 7 is going to have to keep the ball inside and infront of them. However, Abingdon can score and move the ball if they open things up. Widner and Dawson both have good speed that can cause magna vista problems... Give Hess time and Abingdon can keep it close.

What's great about high school and college is that these are 14-18 year old kids and anything can happen in one night. That's why it's so exciting.

Magna Vista will blitz alot, they have all year. They have very good speed on both sides of the ball. Very few if any players go both ways so they usually play at a quick pace the whole game. They never huddle on offence so they keep pressure on opponents D most all night. Not only do they run the ball well, but Taylor has thrown for 1400 yards and around 15-16 td's this year. With that being said I agree that with 14-18 year old kids anything can and usually will happen. That is why the games are won or lost on the field and not on the computer screen!! Again safe trip to "The Hole" and good luck to the Falcons!

PS Get some rest on the way down to Ridgeway, it is a long walk from the locker rooms to the field(1/4 of a mile or so). Not good planning when they built the school!

  14. Don't know alot about the Falcons other than Hess is a good QB. Do they run their "O" mostly out of the spread? Also what kind of D do they run, and do they have alot of team speed? Should be a good game Friday, and to all the Falcon fans making the trip to Ridgeway have a safe trip and we will see you at "The Hole" on Friday night!!
