News from Falconland: Someone said at school we have a lot of kids in the weight room lifting for football. I think we could be a major factor in the swd next year. Are we getting a new coach? My dad said he heard Coach Bowles might retire and we might get a coach from Hidden Valley.
I sure hope your best athletes are in the weight room and not on the basketball court considering the 30 point beat down you took from single A Gate City this past week!
Ithought Jacob Hess was the best player for Abingdon.
If you watch Abingdon play they rely heavily on getting the ball into the post (Looney). In my opinion Jacob Hess was a much better player his sophomore year and has focused more on football his junior and senior years which has hurt his development at basketball. I think Looney is their best player followed by Viers and then Jacob Hess.
As of mid-season who are the best basketball players in Southwest VA. Looks like the Arnold kid of Gate City is having a great year, Forrest Stuart of Appalachia, Maggard of Lee High, Tyler Garrison of Powell Valley. Any others in your opinion who are looking good mid-season 2011.
Hurley's center (not sure of his name) should be at the top of the list. Curlee from VA High, Looney from Abingdon and Clark from J.J. Kelly are also very talented.

That doesn't say much for your district then because that kid was way over hyped last year.
AHS will have a lot size to their team... not like in past few years where they had some size and no players. This should be one of the better teams AHS has put out if a few years.
So does this mean Abingdon will only lose by 15 instead of 25 when regional play arrives and they actually have to play a school that has an equal enrollment?
Football would be the hardest to compete in-trust me basketball and baseball we would compete. Do I need to mention soccer or tennis? We would be fine in most sports. ;)
Abingdon would not be competitive in basketball in the River Ridge District. It's one thing to water down your schedule and beat up on schools in SWVA with half your population and think you're good. Schools around the Roanoke/Christiansburg area would dominate Atown.
Honaker fans, has there been any news on what's going to happen with the coaching situation for the girl's program? Breeding was removed from the program in the middle of the year. Is he coming back or will Honaker go in a different direction?
A Div 4 AA school beating a school of 400 is considered a good win? Since Sam Blevins left the Abingdon program there's been a slow decline. Atown can beat all of the small schools they want in SWVA but when it comes time for regional play they'll never be able to compete.
Wow, has Abingdon fallen off that much from just a few years ago? When Blevins was coaching there it seemed like they were always winning the SWD. What's going on in Atown these days, lack of talent or coaching, or both?
not puttin anyone down, but prolly battling with Haysi to keep from finishing last. BUT they could shoot the lights out of the ball last year and if they can do that this year without their all star Center who graduated last year then they may be a sleeper.
I thought everyone was returning for Council except for the center.

These are the two greatest SWVA HS football teams of all time.
I'd take the 1997 Appalachia Bulldogs over both of those teams. I believe they beat both Powell Valley (A Div 2 State Champions) and Gate City (AA State Champions) in the same year.
That wouldn't say much about the SWD if Abingdon does dominate. Abingdon wouldn't finish in the top three in the CMD. They've already lost twice to Va. High, Lebanon would beat them, and Gate City should beat them pretty handily tomorrow night.
I was impressed with Va High. They played a tough game against Twin Valley and the score was much closer than I thought considering what each team had coming back this year. Twin Valley should make it back to state. Most of the other teams (J.J. Kelly, Coeburn, Chilhowie, Marion, & Abingdon) looked mediocre and probably won't go very far in regional play unless they improve significantly. I would add that John Battle is probably the worst team in SWVA this year.
It's not going to matter who wins the SWD this year. Once they make it to regions it will be another blow out, especially if a SWD winner has to play against a River Ridge district team. Look at how bad Pulaski beats Abingdon every year and Pulaski may not win their district.
Not if you run a box & 1 on him like Va High did last week. They shut him down and went on to win the game against a more talented Abingdon team. Va High's coach has been very impressive so far.
I believe he's stepping down since his son graduated last year from the program. Battle would probably be very happy to get a coach with ties to Grundy or Cburg considering the program has gone down hill the last few years.
