  5. Figured I would post this since Bristol Hearald can't seem to print the score when Abingdon loses unless it is to Va High. LOL Cavs earn huge SWD win at Abingdon Reece Edwards struck out nine and hurled a three-hit shutout April 23 as Carroll County opened Southwest District play with a huge 2-0 road win at preseason district favorite Abingdon. Edwards threw 127 pitches and worked his way out of a couple of jams to record the shutout, while Bronson Bowman went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run. After Edwards gave up a leadoff walk to start the game, Carroll County (5-4, 1-0 SWD) catcher Josh Underwood threw out Jacob Meade trying to steal second. Edwards issued one more walk before striking out Cody Hahn to end the inning. Edwards again issued a leadoff walk in the third to Jacob Doss, but Underwood again caught an Abingdon (9-3, 2-1 SWD) base runner trying to steal second. Edwards retired the next four batters he faced before giving up a two-out walk in the fourth. He struck out Reid Halsey to end the inning, however. The Carroll pitcher faced his biggest threat in the bottom of the fifth after hitting Lukas Hart with a pitch with two outs. Doss followed with a single and Cameron Phillips walked to load the bases, but Hart was caught trying to steal home for the third out. Edwards issued a one-out single to Andrew Francisco in the sixth, but struck out the next two he faced. Ratliff ripped a one-out double for the Falcons in the seventh, but Edwards got the next batter to pop out to center before Ratliff was caught trying to steal third for the final out. Hahn also threw a masterpiece for the Falcons, allowing just four hits and two runs in a complete-game effort. But Carroll got all the scoring it would need in top of the third after Bowman singled to center, took second base on a passed ball and crossed home plate on Ryan Gravley’s RBI single to right. The Cavaliers added an insurance run in the seventh after Kenley Meredith reached base after being hit by a pitch. Courtesy runner B.J. Utt moved to second on a Seth Burris sacrifice, then took third on a passed ball before scoring on Blake Wood’s RBI sacrifice for a 2-0 lead. Carroll nearly added another run after Taylor Case reached on an error and Bowman singled to right. Case took third on a throwing error, but was thrown out at home for the third out. Gravley went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Cavs, while Edwards helped his own cause by going 1-for-3 at the plate. Read more: Carroll News (Va) - Cavs earn huge SWD win at Abingdon
  6. Carroll takes down Abingdon 2-0 behind complete game shut out by Jr. Reece Edwards.
  7. that they were losing every game 3-4 years ago and now winning every game is that the freshmen who were starting 3-4 years ago are now seniors. Everything goes in cycles. School size really has nothing to do with it. Experience and dedication are more important. This group of players has paid their dues. They have been playing AAU together since they were 9-10 years old. They averaged 40-50 games a year for the past 9-10 years. Often times playing up against older kids, just to get games. They have played in tournaments all over the state of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Besides I wasn't on here talking about Carroll's record until now. I was replying to who the best individual seniors were.

  9. So I guess we are supposed to judge them on how they play against Chilhowie, Northwood, Rural Retreat, & Holston, huh?
  10. I have only seen Marion play once against Carroll. Richardson & Lincoln didn't do much in that game. Lincoln does have good size, picked up some nice blocks and caused several players to change their shots, but didn't do much on offensive end. Carroll's guards, Smoot, Beamer, Gravley kept Richardson in check most of the night.
  11. Carroll rallies late to beat Oak Hill Red by Allen Worrell Editor Down six with about two minutes left in the third quarter against a much bigger and more athletic Oak Hill Red team, Carroll County’s boys appeared destined to suffer their first basketball loss of the season Jan. 29. But it was precisely at that time when the Cavaliers showed why they are 18-0, going on a 15-0 run over the next seven minutes to rally for a 59-51 win in Hillsville. “I think the kids really showed good poise. We got on them in here a little bit at halftime about playing scared,†Carroll County head coach Brad Hawks said. “The second half they came out and didn’t play scared, they attacked, they looked for open guys and rebounded and boxed out better. That was the difference I thought.†Oak Hill (15-2) banged six 3-pointers in the first half to build a 35-29 lead at the break. Scott King’s third 3-pointer made it 40-34, and the Warriors went ahead 45-39 with 1:52 left in the third quarter when Kem Ubaru drove hard to the basket and was fouled on an old-fashioned three-point play. Because of Oak Hill’s size and athleticism, Carroll County (18-0, 5-0 SWD) elected not to press Oak Hill as much as it does against most teams. But after Ryan Gravley’s jumper, a well-timed press forced a turnover and led to another Gravley basket just before the end of the third, trimming the Warriors’ lead to 45-43. Carroll then forced turnovers on back-to-back possessions to open the fourth, with a five-second call on the Warriors leading to a Connor Lundy 3-pointer that put the Cavs ahead for good at 46-45. Content to hold the ball with the lead, Carroll slowed things down. After shooting 50 percent (17-of-34) through the first three quarters, the Warriors finally went cold, missing their first four shot attempts of the fourth quarter. Although Oak Hill had a big edge on the offensive boards in the first half, Carroll limited the Warriors to one-and-done on every possession in the fourth quarter. “They were just throwing over the top of the press, and that’s probably the second biggest team we play all year unless we make it into the regional finals or state,†Hawks said. “But we just really settled it down, tried to look for the open shot, the open man. We knew if we could get some good looks we could get our guys shooting well. And defensively we boxed out a little better.†After Gravley added a driving basket with 6:03 left to put his team up 48-45, the Warriors had to start fouling. Carroll iced the game by going 11-of-12 from the line in the fourth quarter, with Gunnar Beamer making 6-of-6 in the quarter and 10-for-10 for the night. For the game, the Cavs knocked down 18-of-20 free throws. “That is super to shoot 90 percent for the game. You can’t ask for anything more from your guards,†Hawks said of Beamer and Gravley. “They are kind of like a two-headed snake when they get the ball…hard to press, hard to trap, hard to foul at the end. I was just real pleased with the effort.†Oak Hill controlled the first half as King Scott and Jeff Uju each knocked down three 3-pointers in the as the Warriors continually worked the ball around until they found the open man on the perimeter. Carroll adjusted in the second half, however, and Oak Hill only made one more from downtown in the second half. “We changed our assignments a little bit. Chris Smoot played straight man with no help on the King Scott kid, who can really play. And then we put Ryan Gravley on Jeff Uju with no help,†Hawks said of the second-half strategy. “Those two guys shot lights out in our scrimmage (with Oak Hill in the preseason). We thought it might be a fluke, but they really can shoot that good. It was just one of those things, but I was real happy with the way we responded in the second half. The kids came out with fire.†Gravley led all scorers with 22 points for the Cavaliers, while Beamer added 13 points with his perfect free-throw shooting. Lundy drilled three 3-pointers to finish with nine points for Carroll. “I would dare say that is the most athletic team we’ve played all year. They shoot the ball so good from outside,†Hawks said. “And their offensive rebounding, five guys go to the glass and they just punish you because they are so athletic. It was a great game for us going into Saturday’s game (with Virginia Episcopal).†Oak Hill 16..19..10….6 - 51 Carroll14..15..14..16 - 59 Read more: Carroll News (Va) - Carroll rallies late to beat Oak Hill Red
  12. Carroll’s Holder verbally commits to Liberty by Allen Worrell Editor - Carroll News Carroll County’s basketball team scored one of their biggest victories of the season Tuesday night against Oak Hill Red, but it was football that made the biggest news of the night. Minutes after the Cavaliers rallied for a 59-51 win over the Warriors, senior offensive tackle Lucas Holder, also a center on the basketball team, verbally committed to play football at Liberty University. Holder gave his commitment in person to Liberty head coach Turner Gill, who was in attendance with his assistant head coach, Carl Torbush. “I walked over to Coach Gill and hugged him, and he saw the (Liberty) hat I was wearing,†Holder said. “And I told him, ‘I am coming to school next year,’ and he wrapped his arms around me and he said, ‘Good. We are glad to have you on board.’ It is a great feeling. It is good to be over. It was a fun process, but I am glad I finally have closure.†Certainly, it has been a long recruiting process for the 6-6, 270-pound offensive tackle. An All-Region IV first-team selection and an All-Group AA second-team pick by the Virginia High School Coaches Association, Holder drew interest from a number of colleges, including a handful of ACC schools. An official visit to Liberty the Jan. 26-27 weekend sold him on his decision, however. “The people there, from the coaches to the students, everyone will always lend an extra hand. Everyone is extra nice to people so it really sold it for me. They were just Class A, Grade A people,†Holder said. “If my kids had to sign with somebody, it’s someone I would want them to be with. I didn’t see them as coaches. I went into Coach Gill’s home and saw them all as fathers and husbands. They were just great men. That was the thing I love and respect about all of them.†In December of 2012, Holder was one of about 100 high school seniors chosen to play in the NUC All-American North-South Senior Game in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He also helped pave the way for quarterback Connor Lundy to set a school record for passing yards in a season with 1,723 in 2012. At Liberty, Holder will have the chance to play for some highly-regarded coaches. Gill, who went 28-2 as the starting quarterback for Nebraska in the early 1980s, quickly made a name for himself in the coaching ranks for turning the University of Buffalo from one of the worst programs in college football into the Mid American Conference champions in 2008. After a two-year stint as head coach at Kansas University, Gill took over as Liberty’s head coach in December of 2011. Torbush also brings an impressive resume to Liberty, having served three years as the head coach at the University of North Carolina from 1998-2000. He has also coached at Alabama, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Baylor, among other schools. “Regardless of their coaching accolades, they are just great people,†Holder said. “It is good to be around good, wholesome people and that is the thing that stuck out to me. That is what I want to surround myself with.†It also doesn’t hurt that Liberty is highly regarded both academically and athletically. The Flames have won five of the past six Big South Conference football championships and are eyeing a move to big-time Division I football in the near future. “They are expanding the stadium right now. It holds about 20,000 and by my sophomore year it will hold 35,000,†Holder said. “They have the biggest football-only weight room in the country and they have one of the top strength and conditioning coaches in the country. He bench pressed 805 pounds. And it’s a big deal for me because this is what I have been working for since I was probably 14 years old.†Ironically, Holder first caught the eye of Liberty’s coaches while they were scouting another player, Martinsville’s Larry Perkins, a 6-5 defensive end that made the All-Timesland team this past season. “They came and watched me at Homecoming, but they didn’t come to watch me. They came to watch the Perkins kid from Martinsville,†Holder said. “By the end of the game, Coach (Dennis) Wagner told me he was watching him because he was on me the whole night and he only had two tackles the whole game. I shut him down and Wagner called our coaches and told them he wanted me down for a visit.†Since that time, Holder has built a special relationship with Wagner, his position coach. “He is a great guy,†Holder said. “Three of his former players just played in the Pro Bowl and he has coached over 25 NFL players. It’s just a great place to be and to develop, not only as an athlete, but also academically and spiritually. They develop you as a person, helping you become a better man, not only in football, but by becoming a better person while doing it.†Holder said he plans to send in his national letter of intent to Liberty on Feb. 6, National Signing Day. 13. Carroll - Ryan Gravley (will repeat as POTY in southwest) - Carroll's floor leader, leads team in scoring & assists. Very heads up player. Carroll - Austin Horton- CC's Big man is often overlooked. Doesn't put up a lot of scoring due to great guard play, but is capable and takes care of business when Carroll does elect to go inside. Also has played great D and gets a ton of rebounds. Took 35 charges as a junior, not sure how many this year, but if there is state record, he should be approaching it. Carroll - Chris Smoot - CC's best defensive player. Very quick, shuts down most guards that he covers. Good 3 pt shooter. Abingdon - Mack Owens - Very solid player, tough inside and also has good range. Put up 28 in loss to Carroll at Abingdon. Tazewell - Walker - Most athletic kid in the district.
  14. HILLSVILLE - Ryan Gravley led the Cavaliers with 19 points. Conner Lundy added 15 points to the score for Carroll County. Teammate Duncan Reece had 13 points.
