Definitely better than ph and Grundy though. Ph got beat by Marion by 15+ and Lebanon beat Grundy by 20 I think. Does anyone know who the starter was that was out?
I used to make that drive daily. Took me almost an hour some days. I hate to think how long it would take a bus to make it.
With the Roads we have in Buchanan County it is probably an hour and half on a Bus, but the powers that be are only worried about getting Grundy a new School.
Riverheads was 1A for the longest time, barely had enough to bump to 2A. But they are dressing and traveling in the 70s, if not 80s with a smash-mouth brand of football. Sometimes it is just hard to explain.
Playing around with some numbers it looks to me like Rural Retreat may need help even with a win over Lebanon to jump the Pioneers. I think 30 points is about all they will add Friday with a win and other rider points. Good chance they need Fort Chiswell to beat Honaker to have a shot to jump Lebanon even with a win.
Have seen Rye Cove, PH, Lebanon, Grundy, Holston, Northwood, Honaker, and RR play. PH and Grundy are a cut above in that group from what I’ve seen. Both have played relatively strong schedules so far, both have awesome RBs (probably the best in Region D in Scammell and McFail), and have good enough defenses. The turnaround at Rye Cove is impressive and their coach probably should win COTY, but they’ve benefited from an easy schedule so far and have pulled out a couple of close games against average teams. Play sound football on both sides of the ball but don’t see them making the finals. Rural Retreat, Lebanon, and maybe Holston would be in the next tier for me of the teams I’ve seen. RR is solid and Lebanon in particular could play spoiler. Their defense has some problems but when they can keep the QB protected and their passing attack gets rolling, they can put up some points. Honaker is a sieve on defense. Their offense is pretty good but we’ve seen what happens when they play a good team in Grundy. Until they played Lebanon, NW played arguably the easiest schedule in SWVA and struggled to beat arguably historically bad Marion and Chilhowie teams. They are inept on offense and I don’t see them winning another game unless their defense can create some points. Haven’t seen Burton but heard they are putting things together.
One of those average teams beat the number two ranked 1A team in WVA.
I hope he's another future D1 kid and NFL player from SWVA. I love it when kids in SWVA get in the spotlight at an early age. I'm going to be sure to keep an eye on Rye Cove over the next few years. It's going to be fun watching him.
Some of the big Schools, probably from Tenn. will wind up with him, no way he stays at Rye Cove.
