  1. I am not much on wagering....too many variables in sports, especially H.S.  BUT, I am open to suggestions.  VHS has the athletes, the facilities and the support to be good year in-year out.  Just need the right person to lead the program. I think Crist is the right person.  However, it seems that in the past, parents have had too much influence in the program.  If that hasn't ended, we will be an "also ran".

  2. To my recollection Region D and C were always matched in the State quarters, as were A and B.  If I had to hazard a guess (one of pure speculation) I would say that almost every year, a team from Region B got knocked out in the Region semi's or state quarters that would have PROBABLY won Region D.  I know there is no way to prove this.  Under this new system, it appears that the better teams will make the final 4, or at least have the chance.

I try to attend the State tourney every year or at least part of it.  There just seem to be more teams that pass the "eye" test from Region A and B.  And this comes from a died in the wool SWVA/Region D born and bred die hard.

That is not to say a Region D team can not and has not been able to compete.   I think we will see in this new format if my "eye test" was 20-20 or if I need lasik!

All the above is also not accounting for Radford from old Region C (with the occasional James River or Parry Mclure thrown in).

  3. So, under the old format, GC won one title out of seven trips.  Not trying to start an argument here but I think the old system penalized schools from stronger basketball Regions while GENERALLY rewarding Region D.  The 2 Region D teams (Reg Champ and runner up) usually di not have nearly as tough a road to Richmond as did the other regions.  Not saying there haven't been some good teams come out of Region D but looks like the 2 Reg. D reps under the old system didn't fare well when they faced teams outside the Region.

I think the new format will give a better indication of where the basketball talent lies year in and year out.

(And I guess I should clarify, I was talking about Boys basketball)

  4. I was in Richmond a few years ago attending the state championship semis and finals.  Castlewood was playing a Region B team.  The scuttlebutt from the Castlewood folks was that their team was really good and had an awfully good chance of winning it all.  I decided to hang around and see how the boys from my backyard would do.  I couldn't get out of the parking garage anyway.  Nothing against Castlewood but they were not in the same league as the team they played.  It was pretty ugly until garbage time when they were able to cut into the lead a little.  If I recall correctly, the team they played did go on to win it all, but  there was a BIG gap in the talent level.  You are probably right, Radford is about the only consistent threat from down this way.

  5. I truly believe VHS has the potential to be similar to Fredericksburg's James Monroe High School.  JM is a powerhouse year after year.  City school with really good facilities, loads of athletes, decent financial support.  I think what has held VHS back in the past is not having a solid coach in place to lead the program.  I hope (believe) Crist is the answer.

Given all that, I think VHS has a good 7-8 win regular season next year and continues the growth.

  6. Me and a couple of old Bearcats made it to the game...just now thawing out.  Had nice convo with several Giles fans.  Was impressed with the field conditions.  Great job by the field crew.  Hope the VHSL lets y'all take that Train horn with you next week and Giles wins number 4...

  7. Congratulations to all who have received post season recognition.  VHS' Justin Brown was named Conference 40 Offensive Player of the Year.

  8. That is what I meant by the "finest" player.  He is a great person and was a heckuva player.  Nothing but respect for him and his whole family.

    P.S.:

"...so you can SUGGEST what you want but it doesn't mean I have to listen".  Does too!

  9. For future reference, I suggest that you not accuse us of something that DID NOT HAPPEN.  And guess what else?  You don't like to read my posts?  There is no law saying you have to, Dude!  That goes for anyone else who doesn't like a poster who defends his alma mater from scurrilous accusations.

And to the genius that is hokiebird7...all but four teams in each classification are playing basketball.  And unless you are Charlie Mullins (the finest football player to come out of Giles, IMHO), I suggest that you mind your own business.

  10. And still not one single example to prove VHS is "whining" about losing a football game.  So when that stops, I'll stop.  You guys don't always get your way.  I refuse to back down when someone purposely lies about my alma mater. So either put up or shut up, as the saying goes...

  11. Give it a rest. You go back and read the posts, it started when a VHS fan said VHS could have done better against Giles. And what did you expect, no replies to that? No one from Richlands was whining about the loss, we got beat by the better team that night. I'll say it again, it's the least amount of talent we have had in well over 10 years, and we still won 9 games and made it to the 3rd round, were all happy with that! Your Bearcats lost Twice to Richlands this year, TWICE. (2 times) (TWO) (2)...Dude it was a VHS fan that started the whining. NO VHS did not play them better than Richlands, WHY? Because you lost both times you played Richlands and your season was over! Period!

And you still cannot show one single post in which anyone from VHS was whining or insulting to R-lands.  You admit you have thin skin.  That's okay, we all have our faults.  But don't say we are whining about losing a game.  Didn't and hasn't happened.  "Dude" you  can say it all you want but that don't make it true.  Prove me wrong mon ami!  You cannot so GIVE IT A REST.  You are in the same boat as we are...playing basketball.

  12. If you can show me ONE post where anybody from VHS was whining about losing to R-lands I'll gladly apologize and shut up.  All the posts where complimentary to Richlands following the game and since.  The Richlands people were set off by one, ambiguous comment by a poster who said he felt VHS would have done better v. Giles.  Nothing demeaning or antagonistic there, just an opinion.  But what it has revealed is that there are a bunch of pretty thin-skinned people up in R-lands.

Now there have been some comments directed recently at R-lands fans on here...but nothing about the team, players or the game.  So prove me wrong...this isn't Obama-speak where you can just repeat a lie often enough and people assume it is the truth...go ahead, I dare you!

Hokiebird7...you are way off base.  Maybe you should read the posts before you comment about them.  No whining on here except from a few R-lands people.  Prove me wrong amigo.
