  1. you will be switching your focus to VA High basketball after Friday nights game and I don't need u to suggest anything to me

I suggest you own up to your previous "hilarious" predictions and accept that your team lost to VHS. And who cares about concession stands? Unless they serve trout, most are all alike.

VHS may win or they may lose this week to a very good Richlands team. Either way, it is no skin off my nose. I am just glad they won last week. Too bad you can't give credit where credit is due.

You Her-icanes can dish it out but CANNOT take it.

  2. I dislike to see teams run up the score. It is uncalled for IMHO. But...I dislike it even more when people on the losing team whine about it. Brings too much attention to a meaningless part of the game.

My philosophy on a team running it up on my team? Don't comment about it, store it away, and use it as motivation the next time.

  3. Western States? I believe you mean Southern States. But anyway, you need to worry about Richlands instead of commenting on what you apparently know nothing about.

Not quite...I meant Southwestern States mental institution. But you still didn't refute my assertion that the only athlete you have to hang your hat on is Handley. Prove me wrong. And just because Nolan Ryan passed through the town doesn't count.

You and canes00 have a serious case of sour grapes and just can't give it a rest. I suggest you switch your focus from VHS football to Marion basketball.

P.S.: canes00: No comment about the Marion/ Appo game being closer than VHS/Gretna? Care to go double or nothing on this weeks game? Oh never mind, your team is on the hardcourt not the gridiron. Maybe next year?

  4. Mance always chooses to play on a Friday night at the Ernie when he has a choice.

One thing to consider in this game, two of the VA High  football coaches were coaching at Richlands last year.

These coaches know the tendencies and the indepth idiosyncrasies

of all of the Richlands players except maybe for the freshmen. Not only does Richlands have to prepare for a team they've played and beaten in the regular season, but many of the newer plays they developed for the regular season game, are not new to VA High anymore. VA High probably has more in depth knowledge of the Richlands football program than any other team they've prepared against.

That being said..."it is what it is"...and you try to prep the best you can against another team who intimately knows your program inside and out. Ultimately, it comes down to the players executing ...and with both teams playing better in the latter part of the season (and healthy)... also, both advancing to the second round of the playoffs...the ole saying is true..."whichever team wants it most and makes the least mistakes wins this game."

With all of the above being said, I'm a Richlands' fan and believe we can win this game... I'm sure the VA High fans believe they can win too.

I am sure VHS benefitted against Gretna from having advice from the Blacksburg coaching staff. Sure won't hurt against Richlands that VHS' staff is very familiar with Mance. And history seems to side with the team that lost the first time in rematches of teams that are fairly close.

VHS hasn't been significantly relevant for several years in football. I hope this is the beginning of their upcurve. I doubt VHS will win the state so they have to lose sometime. May or may not be this week. Regardless, they are starting to make a foot print in SWVA football (I hope).

Looking forward to a good game against a very good team. Much like I said about Gretna, I believe we either win a close one or get blown out.

  5. We have a little more than that Bob. You must not know Marion very well.

Yep. You have some National Forest which used to be decent hunting near Sugar Grove. There is the trout hatchery. And there is always Western States. But athletically? Let me know where I am wrong?

Did not start this, but I will defend VHS. Some of you Marion fans have a serious case of sour grapes.

  6. Nothing wrong with having a little hope. I'd just be a little more realistic if I was playing Gretna.

I am being very realistic.  VHS can compete with these guys.  Gretna isn't that far removed from owning the longest losing streak in VHSL history.  They have been good for the last 10 years or so but that cycle is starting to turn, IMHO.

VHS has the advantage of Crist getting some inside information from his dad on how to beat Gretna.  VHS was (unfortunately) coached by Thurman for 2 years.  Gretna is a product of Thurmanese.  VHS should have some inkling of what to expect from the crowd and the players.

VHS has had success throwing the ball of late.  Greta is not good at defending the pass.  Justin Brown is a legitimate running back.  VHS can mix it up enough to keep Gretna on its heels.

VHS does have to overcome the long bus ride, the trash talking, the overall team speed of Gretna.  But they can.  I expect a VHS win...I am not much on moral victories.  If Gretna wins, congratulations to them.  But if VHS wins, it puts us on the football map.  We have more to gain in this one.  I hope we are the hungrier team.

  7. Blacksburg beat Gretna this year with a mediocre team.  VHS' coach is the son of Blacksburg's coach.  I am sure he is getting a good dose of information on Gretna.

Tell you what Canes00...I'll bet the VHS/Gretna game is closer than the spanking Appo is about hand down.

  8. At the risk of sounding like the biggest Homer of all time, I truly believe VHS has a real shot at Gretna.  VHS can match their speed.  VHS can match their offense.  The Hawks have a tendency to start bellyaching at the refs, barking at each other, etc if they are not blowing out their opponents.  If VHS can keep it close late, they have a chance.

However, if VHS turns over the ball, doesn't limit the Gretna big plays and don't ignore the extracurricular activities/actions of the Hawks and their fans, it will be a LONG, LONG night.

I believe Coach Crist's experience will help prepare my beloved Bearcats and they upset Gretna and take another big step in the process of building a decent program.  VHS 34  Gretna 28....

  9. Thurman left Gretna to take over at VHS.  He basically ruined VHS for 2 seasons before bolting to Harrisonburg. Thurman encouraged all that...lets say "bravado"...BS that VHS sometimes displayed.  I just find it ironic (not sure why) that two of his former teams are playing.

Hope my Bearcats play at a high level or they may get trounced.   But I think they will compete and feel that they have a chance in this one...not being a homer either.  Gretna is down this year from all accounts (but are still very good).   I think the matchups are not horrible for VHS in this one.  I doubt we could stop Giles' offense.

  10. VHS had the turnover bug in the 1st half. Fortunately, Lee caught the bug in the second half. Big big win for VHS. This kind of win can be something to build on for the future...winning against a comparable team with a lot on the line. Good luck in the playoffs.

  11. Lebanon is better than Union, Grayson County, Sullivan North, and Gate City???  All of those teams are better than Lebanon.  Don't see anything special about Lebanon's schedule either.  Lee's played 4 of the same teams Lebanon has, plus Lebanon has played Castewood, a team that lost to Thomas Walker.   Don't see Virginia High's as much more than Lee's....and I say all that in my thinking that Lee's is fairly weak and much more watered down than what most Lee teams have played in the past.

    NMMM

  12. With the new 6 classes, there will not be nearly as much disparity in enrollment per classification. As far as strength training goes, SWVA players used to be "all day strong" as Grandpa called it.  They worked on farms; loading hay, raising tobacco, cattle, etc.  Even the most of rural areas have little of that activity now.  So weight training/conditioning is very important.
