GMan 3,569 Report Share Posted March 11, 2005 in Brazil??? Here's the story... Over 300 injured in soccer riot by Ricardo Rodrique for Brazil Today, Sao Paulo office Over 300 fans were injured, some critically, after a riot broke out during a soccer match between rivals Sao Paulo and Palmeiras. The riot started just as the game began and officials halted play and sent the teams to their locker rooms for safety reasons. Police were quite confused as to what started the riot which began in the stands and spilled over onto the playing field. "At this point, we have no idea who or what started the skirmish" said Pablo Fuentes, the chief of police in Sao Paulo. "We will be investigating the situation further and justice will be served." However, Jim Smith, an American tourist visiting Brazil, was attending his first soccer match and witnessed the whole incident from the stands. "I can understand why the fans were so upset," Smith said. "The media had billed this as a very important football game between two of the best teams and biggest rivals in Brazil and all they got was a soccer game instead." BarraBrava99 12 Report Share Posted March 11, 2005 it's a testament to the passion fans have for the game and for their teams. ... then again i'm sure there are those that merely use football (that's soccer yanks!) as an excuse to get into a rumble and cause some damage. they suck. GMan 3,569 Author Report Share Posted March 11, 2005 Either this joke was over your heads or you didn't read it close enough...it makes fun of soccer and its fans fighting at games. The American points out that the reason the fans always fight is because the games is advertised as "football" (futbol for you Spanish speakers) and it turns out to only be "soccer". Get it??? AtrnyGnrl05 11 Report Share Posted March 11, 2005 This country is definatly missing out, we sent Howard to Man U and he even has torrets, but STILL hardly anybody KNOWS!!! AHHHH!!! The stereotypical mom takes her kids to A. Football practice (no) B. Baseball practice (no) C. Basketball practice (no), but D. SOCCER PRACTICE. If a stereotypical American family has their kids playing soccer, why is it not more popular??? I dont understand.

It is the "stereotypical mom" who takes the kids to soccer practice...MOM being the key word. Why is soccer not more popular? Because DAD doesn't care about it...he's too busy taking the kids to football, basketball, and baseball practice. Soccer has not captured the AMERICAN MALE SPORTS FANS' attention, therefore it will not be popular in America until it does so...maybe in 20-30 years it may be close... [/ QUOTE ] And even if it is ever measurably popular, it will never compare with the English professional league system. Whether you're a soccer fan or not, that system (particularly the promotion/relegation aspect of it) is primitive cool.
