State Basketball Tournament this week in hopes of bringing home the school's third state championship in hoops. This past December the Beaver football team captured its eighth state championship. Should Coach Ernie Gilliard's squad accept the big trophy Saturday afternoon in the Charleston Civic Center it would mark only the fourth time in state history that a school has won a football and boys basketball championship in the same season. The first time was in the 1967-68 school year when the Ceredo-Kenova Wonders captured both crowns. C-K was a football and basketball powerhouse, having won 10 Class AA football championships and one Class A title and two roundball titles between 1958 and 1994. C-K merged with Buffalo Wayne and Huntington Vinson in the late 1990s to form Spring Valley High School. The Northfork Blue Demons were the next school to accomplish the feat. Northfork winners of a still-standing national record eight straight state basketball championships. The Blue Demons defeated Ceredo-Kenova in the 1973 Class AA football title game and in the spring of '74 won the first of their eight in a row. Northfork was consolidated into Mount View High School following the 1983-84 school year. Wheeling Central, the team that ended Northfork's basketball streak in 1982, won football and basketball championships in the 2002-03 school year. Several schools have won boys and girls basketball championships in the same season. Northfork turned the trick three times from '77-'79 and just last season Winfield in Class AA and Wheeling Central in Class A both took home basketball crowns. Bluefield begins its state championship quest Thursday at 5:30 against Braxton county.
