PRINCETON - "It's just time to go home."

That was the simple explanation of Robert Wray, former boy's basketball coach at Princeton Senior High School. His resignation will be officially turned in to the Mercer County Board of Education at their next meeting on Tuesday evening.

Wray, who teaches physical education at the high school, confirmed on Friday that he is resigning from his coaching job after 15 years of directing the Tigers.

Wray is joining his wife, who moved to Roanoke three years ago. He plans to teach in the Virginia city and possibly continue his coaching career.

The coach has been on the basketball sidelines in Mercer County for the past 30 years. He was in charge of the program at Bramwell High School for 15 years. His Millionaires brought the Class A championship home at the end of the 1988 season.

He began his Princeton head coaching job for the 1989-90 campaign. His best season record as a coach was the 2000-01 season, when the Tigers won 65 percent of their games (15-8) . In both of the last two years, the team finished 4-19.

His overall record at PSHS was 170-194.

The process to fill the coaching vacancy requires the school's principal, Todd Browning, to submit a name or names to the Mercer County Board of Education, which has the final authority to fill the position.

Browning, contacted on Thursday night, declined to comment on the situation until the board takes action, probably next week, to accept Wray's resignation letter.

The new coach will inherit a team that will lose just two seniors this spring to graduation, Jamal Fenwick and James Hale.

Wray said, "The cupboard is not bare. We've got some good young players in the Princeton program."

A new crop of student-athletes shows promise to improve Princeton's win-loss record. The school's freshman team was 18-0 this season, capturing the area ninth-grade championship and capping a multi-year span in which they were reportedly 52-0.
