montcalmkilla89 10 Author Report Share Posted August 23, 2005 people keep talkin about that bein the longest yard play...the colts and bills usta do the play alot...where the quarterback walks toward the coach and acts like he cant hear the play and they direct snapp it to the rb...its legal as long as the qb does it in a shotgun...cuz if he sets up under the center then motions theyll call it odly enough offsides on the qb...they did so on the playoff game against the pats...so i guess same rules apply

GMan 3,569 Report Share Posted August 23, 2005 One new rule that I am aware of is all eligible receivers must line up no closer than 9 yards (the numbers on the field) to the sideline. Some teams liked to run a pass play where a WR would just be about a yard on the field (on their sideline, of course) and the defense would lose track of him. One of the teams Bluefield played in the playoffs last year tried that play a couple of times.

[/ QUOTE ] That is NOT the new rule....the new rule is that all players must be inside the numbers or nine yards from the sideline at some point before the snap. The old rule was 15 yards of the ball. Once they are inside this area momentairly they can line up anywhere they want inside the sidelines. UKCats1 10 Report Share Posted August 23, 2005 You are correct Hillbilly. All players must be within the nine yard mark or the top of the numbers at some moment between the ready for play signal and the snap.

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks UK the rule (both old and new one) is designed to eliminate the old "sleeper play" where the offense would huddle up with 10 players and then sneak one off the sideline trying to fool the defense into not covering them. UKCats1 10 Report Share Posted August 23, 2005 Yes that is true. Also breaking the huddle with 12 men is a substitution violation and should be blown dead before the play starts. This is to keep from running two men to the sideline and one stopping before going out of bounds. The old rule of having to be withing 15 yards of the ball was so subjective having this new rule will make it easier to enforce.
