beaverbaseball 10 Report Share Posted October 3, 2005 whats the deal with Riverside??? I heard 8 players got kicked off the team for drinking on the bus on the way home from a game
Beckley_WWHS 10 Report Share Posted October 3, 2005 Yeah 8 players from Riverside got kicked off the team. Not sure why but that is the rumor I have read. All 8 were starters I believe including their best player, the starting QB. They have a lot of sophomores on the roster. Riverside was already down quite a bit this season before they lost those 8. I think getting into one of the last few playoff spots come season's end would be a great goal for them. I don't see them doing much better than that, but you never know, Whitman is a great coach. edrforshey 27 Author Report Share Posted October 3, 2005 he isn't even the best coach on the Riverside staff. Ralph Hensley is 10 times the coach that Whitman thinks he is. Whitman has had more talent than any school since Riverside opened in 1999 and has NO titles and only 1 championship appearance to show for all that talent. Beckley_WWHS 10 Report Share Posted October 3, 2005 Maybe I should have said coaching staff. Riverside just always seems to be a dangerous team even when you think they are down. Last year is a good example, not many people thought they would make it to the semifinals.
WeirFootball 10 Report Share Posted October 3, 2005 Ed, you seem very knowledgable of the game, but man you are way off on this comment. He took Riverside to the AAA state title game in their first year of existence and one year after taking Dupont to the AA title game Whitman is a great coach, and one of the best in the state. IMO, the top coaches in the state are... Bowers(Morgantown)<--Took the Mohigans the to the semis in 03 and led them to the 04 AAA State Championship in only his first two years as a head coach. Harmon(Wayne)<--Similar situation as Walker at Martinsburg. Wayne was strictly a baseball school until he took over as head coach there. Kramer(Weirton Madonna)<--Class act who took a school w/ 110 kids that dressed only 25 players to the state title game and hung w/ powerhouse Wheeling Central. Lemley(Poca)<--Led Poca to 4 AA state titles, and state record for AA 3 in a row(01,02,03). Simon(Bluefield)<--As much as I hate to say it. LOL Walker(Martinsburg)<--Their program was nonexistent until he got there. Whitman(Riverside)<--Ed, I'm sorry but you are wrong on this one. This guy is a great coach. Weir's coach, Eric Meek, will be one of the best in the state in a few years and I'm not just saying that b/c I'm a Weir fan. Meek has won a National Championship w/ Jim Tressel at YSU as an assistant, coached at D1-AA Robert Morris, and has taken Wellsville deep into the OH playoffs as their head coach. I think he's currently one of the better coaches in the state, but he's only in his first season at Weir so I guess we will see after this year. edrforshey 27 Author Report Share Posted October 3, 2005 7-3 in 1999 Lost State Finals Best talent in the State that year 8-2 in 2000 Lost 2nd Round 9-1 in 2001 Lost Semi Finals 9-1 in 2002 ? I can't find my 2002 AAA Playoff Book 8-2 in 2003 Lost in 2nd Round 6-4 in 2004 Lost in Semi Finals What has he WON with all that talent at Riverside? NOTHING
WeirFootball 10 Report Share Posted October 3, 2005 First of all, it's hard to win when a school consolidates for awhile. Brooke had a lot of talent when they first opened up, but they didn't start actually being a serious contender until the late 70's early 80's. You act like Riverside has all the talent in the world. I saw them play last season and they were not that great. They overachieved, IMO and that is credited to coaching and the heart of the team. I mean, he's not going to win a state title every year. Some good coaches go through their entire career and only wish they won a state championship. Get real, Whitman is a class act and a great coach and I am far from a Dupont or Riverside fan. edrforshey 27 Author Report Share Posted October 3, 2005 His 1st two teams were suppose to be one of the best this state every saw. They couldn't win a title. He always has players quit or being kicked off for a number of reasons. I honestly believe this school should have won several titles since 1999. An probably would have won in 1999 if Hensley was the guy in charge. I've seen Whitman teams many times since 1999, and honestly believe he chocks in BIG GAMES. WeirFootball 10 Report Share Posted October 4, 2005 Ed, you are normally pretty reasonable but you couldn't be more wrong on this one. Whitman is a great coach and if he was at Parkersburg, you'd say he was the next Lombardi or Rockne!
edrforshey 27 Author Report Share Posted October 4, 2005 NO, I wouldn't because, I believe that the past few coaches and the current coach at Parkersburg are all better coaches than Whitman. He just doesn't come across to me as being a good coach. Sorry, I feel this way guys but that's my honest opinion of Whitman.
