Guest old_school Report Share Posted December 9, 2005 TAZEWELL, Va.  Two “top dogs†have earned a unique honor at Tazewell High School. Jarrod Burton and Whitney Davis have been honored with a nomination for the coveted Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. Given in conjunction with the collegiate Heisman, this program celebrates the nation’s top high school seniors who best exemplify a well-rounded “citizen-scholar-athlete.†Principal B. Keith Hovis nominated these two promising leaders for their academic aptitude, athletic talent and exceptional commitment to their communities. “We believe it’s important to celebrate success in all facets of life,†said Mr. Hovis. “The Wendy’s High School Heisman is the ultimate way to showcase students’ diverse achievements for all to see. We are extremely proud of Jarrod and Whitney. They are certainly an asset to Tazewell High School.†Burton has participated and lettered in varsity football and track and field since his freshman year and has maintained a high academic average of 3.99 during this time. He has been involved in service projects in the school and community, including volunteer services with the Dare Jamboree, Shop-with-a-Cop Project, FCA youth rally, and the Little League football program in the community. Whitney has participated and lettered in varsity softball, basketball, cross-country, and volleyball since her freshman year and has maintained an academic average of 3.95. Davis has volunteered with the TASK summer camp, Shop-with-a-Cop Project, Dare Jamboree, Prom Promise, and with elementary youth programs in the community. In addition, both have been active in extracurricular activities, including Junior and Senior Beta, Cadre, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, church youth groups, SCA, and Students Against Destructive Decisions, to name a few. Each was voted “most athletic†in the senior class. To track a student’s progress throughout the competition or to find out more about the program, please log on to www.wendysheisman.com, or call (800) 244-5161. All nominees were posted on the Wendy’s High School web site in early October of this year. The Wendy’s High School Heisman Program is comprised of five phases – nomination, state finalists, state winners, national finalists, and national winners. Entries are initially evaluated by ACT Assessment during the State Finalists and Stat Winner phases and then passed on to a distinguished panel of judges to elect the National Finalists and National Winners. Twelve national finalists are invited for an all-expense paid trip to New York City. ESPN2 will feature all 12 National Finalists during the Wendy’s High School Heisman Awards Ceremony that will air on Dec. 11.
