No. 11 Virginia Tech will be without two of its top players for Saturday's home game against No. 24 Georgia Tech, as starting receiver Josh Morgan and starting defensive end Chris Ellis have been suspended for the game after being arrested early Sunday.

A school-released statement said the suspension was for an unspecified violation of team rules. In the release, and during his normal Monday teleconference, coach Frank Beamer declined further comment on the situation.

According to Lt. Joe Davis of the Blacksburg police department, both Morgan and Ellis were arrested in the 100 block of Draper Rd., a downtown stretch of restaurants, shops and bars, at approximately 1:50 a.m. Sunday.

Davis said police responded to reports of a large crowd outside and a potential fight about to break out.

"They observed some conduct on Morgan's part and deemed it disorderly," Davis said. "They went to take him into custody and he wouldn't comply, wouldn't submit. So they took him into custody and charged him with disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer."

Then, Davis said, as police attempted to leave the scene with Morgan, Ellis got involved and tried to stop them.

"He also would not comply with commands, so he was also arrested for obstructing an officer," Davis said.

Although Beamer would not comment on the specifics of the case on Monday, he did say he had spoken with receiver David Clowney -- the team's leading receiver after three games who had an emergency appendectomy last week and missed the Cincinnati game. Beamer said Clowney felt ready to play this week, but the coach noted that team doctors would have to clear him first.

Morgan has 10 catches, second on the team, for 161 yards and two touchdowns, and Ellis has 12 tackles, a sack and four quarterback hurries.
