swva_fan 94 Report Share Posted May 16, 2007 The State Corporation Commission has approved a rate increase for Appalachian Power, but it's significantly lower that what the utility requested. Late Tuesday afternoon, the SCC announced a 3.1 percent increase, or about $24 million. APCO had requested an increase of $198.5 million--or 25.4 percent. The SCC's final order said "APCo's customers deserve better treatment than the company wishes to impose upon them." The commission ordered Appalachian Power to begin charging the lower rate in 30 days and to make refunds, with interest, to customers within 90 days. Apco had asked for more time to lower the rates and provide the refunds. APCo filed its $198.5 million rate request in May 2006. By law, the increase was allowed to take effect October 2, 2006 on an interim basis, subject to refund with interest. The SCC says its order will knock $11.80 off the monthly bill of a residential customer who uses one thousand kilowatt hours of electricity. Refunds will appear as a credit on customer bills.
