bluefieldRocks 14 Report Share Posted September 2, 2007 ..Didnt see that coming Independence High’s run with the nation’s longest high school football winning streak is over. Johnny Groene tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Josh Jones in overtime to help Cincinnati Elder end Independence’s 109-game winning streak with a 41-34 victory in the Kirk Herbstreit Challenge on Saturday night. Keith Hamberg sealed the win with an interception for the Panthers (2-0), who forced overtime with a 1-yard TD run by Nick Gramke with 35 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Independence’s Robbie Ward missed a 48-yard field goal in the final seconds of regulation that would have won it. Independence (1-1) had not lost since falling 34-31 to Shelby Crest exactly seven years ago, on Sept. 1, 2000. During the run, the Patriots – who have been ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press state 4-A poll since the beginning of the 2001 season – became the first team to win seven straight state championships in North Carolina. Most of the wins weren’t close. Independence had beaten opponents during its win streak by an average of nearly 35 points per game entering the 2007 season. The Patriots shattered the state record for consecutive wins, breaking the old mark of 46 to open the 2003 season and earning their 100th straight win by beating East Mecklenburg in October. Independence took over the nation’s longest winning streak after Concord (Calif.) De La Salle’s loss in 2004 ended a 151-game winning streak. LegendatLegion 109 Report Share Posted September 2, 2007 These type of streaks may be over in the near future because with all the "pub." out there now for high school football, and the various folks like Herbstreet doing their best to get all the good teams together like they are in various showcases the competition is exponentially tougher than staying in a certain area/region. This game was part of the Kirk Herbstreet classic (or whatever it's name was) Take a look at some of the teams with streaks taking a loss lately because of these type games. Hoover,ALA to River Ridge ,LA (John Curtis and Joe McKnight) last year. Byrnes,SC stopped 2 such streaks (Belle Glade,FLA and Cincinnati, Moeller)the last two years before losing their own to a district rival 2 times last year. Clovis,NM beat Clovis,CA several years back. CA has the greater chance for long streaks because of their setup of sectional champs, you can have 14 undefeated teams. Contrast that with Texas or Florida who play each other to determine a champ much like our own system in Virginia.
LegendatLegion 109 Report Share Posted September 2, 2007 You can dominate your area/state, which is very impressive in most instances, and then before long you start getting offers to play the teams around the country. Bellvue,WA is one that comes to mind having to start playing the California teams.
labrat 17 Report Share Posted September 3, 2007 I was talking to a salesman from that area just before that game. He commented that all streaks come to an end at some point. I should call him and get some lottery numbers.
gconman25 11 Report Share Posted September 4, 2007 Having grown up playing football in VA and now living in OH for the second time in 13 years, I must admit there is a difference in high school football. This was the 3rd year for the Herbstreit Ohio vs USA Challenge and the talent level continues to rise. Last year most of the games were played in Columubus, but this year they were played in Cincinnati. Teams from across the country came to OH to play some of the "powerhouses" and the boys from OH did pretty well (4 of 7). Can't wait until next year to see who will be visiting to take part in the event. Perhaps one of those AAA VA teams for the coast can make it up north? Bluefield_Rules 46 Author Report Share Posted September 4, 2007 [ QUOTE ] the boys from OH did pretty well (4 of 7) [/ QUOTE ] There were 11 games to the event, not 7. And Ohio teams only won 4 of the 11 games. However, they did win two of the bigger games of the event, St. X over DeMatha and Elder over Independence... gconman25 11 Report Share Posted September 4, 2007 I sit corrected willing to admit I have fat fingers and a small case of doing math in public. Some of those teams had no business playing in the classic (Trotwood, Northmont, and Grove City) all have a tough time in their respective conferences. For those guys to compete outside of their level of play is a stretch. Thanks for completing the 7/11 equation!
